Deed of sale

Deed of sale celebrated between João de Benevides, saler, and Jorge Dias de Andrade, purchaser, of an entailed property that belonged to the entail founded by Catarina Álvares Coelho, wife of Francisco Gonçalves, nicknamed Pé de Galinha, with a chapel of masses celebrated in the church of the Misericórdia of Angra. This sale was possible because the chapel founded by Catarina Álvares Coelho did not have the clause that forbade the indivisibility of entailed assets, and also because the succession of the chapel was regulated by election or appointment. Therefore, João de Benevides not only sold the properties but also appointed Jorge Dias de Andrade as administrator of the chapel, with the obligation of celebrating the masses ordered by Catarina Álvares Coelho.

Will

Will made by Jorge Dias de Andrade in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail, composed of his own reserved portion, with a perpetual obligation of three chapels of masses celebrated in every week in the see of Angra, Terceira island, one for his soul and the other for his first and second wifes. He named his niece Branca de Sá to administrate the entail, and one of her nephews, sons of Garcia de Andrade and Fernando Gomes de Tapia, to succeed her on the administration, with the same condition of appointing the next administrator by the time of his death. Every administrator of the entail had the obligation of marrying an orphan girl every year. As to the chapel founded by Catarina Álvares de Coelho, he appointed his nephew Francisco Vaz, and after his death, Diogo de Sá, son of Garcia de Andrade and Fernando Gomes de Tapia.
