Codicil (extract)

Extract of a codicil by Domingos da Silva, through which he bequeaths lands in the outskirts of Sintra to his wife, Isabel Rodrigues, after whose death it would be inherited by his sister, Catarina da Silva. The testator asked his brother, Frei Baltasar dos Reis, to reveal the identity of an unknown person to which Domingos' heirs should pay a rent (foro) each year, and 50 000 réis, which the anonymous creditor had lent to him. Frei Baltasar was also instructed to pay any debts that were declared after Domingos' death.

Declaration deed

Declaration deed concerning Domingos da Silva's codicil, through which Frei Baltasar dos Reis, his late brother, declares that both the rent (foro) and the 50 000 réis mentioned by the former, and 33 200 réis found in a box owned by the deceased, would be delivered to Catarina da Silva, their sister and Gonçalo de Paiva's wife, with the obligation of celebrating, each year after Baltasar's death, 11 masses in a unspecified church. While Baltasar was still alive, Catarina was obligated to send, annually, 4 000 réis to their sisters, who were nuns in the convent of S. Domingos of Elvas. Catarina should pass this inheritance to her son or daughter.

Revocation deed

Revocation deed through which Catarina da Silva and her husband, Gonçalo de Paiva, algibebe, revoked a bond, issued on 1644-04-02, concerning the obligation, imposed by Frei Baltasar dos Reis to them, of paying, during his lifetime, 4 000 réis, each year, to Constança da Trindade and Maria da Nazaré, Catarina and Baltasar's sisters and nuns in the convent of S. Domingos of Elvas. After Baltasar's death, Catarina and Gonçalo were obligated, instead, to support the celebration of 11 masses in a church of their choice. By annulling that document, the couple instituted the pious obligation of celebrating, each year, the referred masses for Baltasar's soul, in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa, whose costs were to be sustained by the revenues of houses they had in Lisboa. That entail should pass to their successors.
