Bond

Bond by which Manuel Lopes, Isabel Luís' widow, links the revenues of houses he had in Lisboa to the obligation of celebrating 3 masses each two weeks for his wife's soul in the church of the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, where she is buried. It is mentioned that Paulo Soares, procurador das Capelas, presented a petition to the Provedor das Capelas, in 1606-12-29, asking him to order Manuel Lopes to present the account of the fulfilment of his wife's will, for it had passed one year since she passed away. Isabel Luís had asked her husband to build a grave where her body should rest and to buy assets or a public debt instrument, using its revenues to support the celebration of 3 weekly masses for her soul.

Petition

Petition by which Manuel Lopes, ourives do ouro, asks the Provedor das Capelas to allow him to link houses in Rua das Manilhas, Lisboa, to the pious obligation established by his wife, Isabel Luís. He and his late wife made a will by which they declared that the third part of their assets should be used to buy a property. Its revenues would support the celebration of annual masses for their souls. Since the petitioner was not able to guarantee the celebration of 3 weekly masses for both of their souls, he decided only to assure that the pious obligations for his wife's soul would be fulfiled. Followed by an undated answer given by the procurador das Capelas, approving this deed and stating that, since Manuel Lopes could not be forced to celebrate masses for his soul before his death, that obligation should be fulfiled by his heirs.
