Will

DOCUMENTO/DATA DE INSTITUIÇÃO: testamento feito em 1491-02-09; codicilo aprovado em 1493-11-26; aberto em 1493-11-30, em Vila Franca do Campo, Ilha de São Miguel, Açores. Tabelião: Afonso Rodrigues, tabelião na referida ilha.
MOTIVOS DA FUNDAÇÃO: a testadora encontrava-se doente; não sabia o dia e hora do seu finamento; temia o estreito dia do juízo do Senhor Deus a que todos eram obrigados; descarrego de sua consciência e boa ordem da sua alma.
ENCARGOS PERPÉTUOS (anuais):
i) missa diária pela sua alma e de seus pais, seguida de responso sobre sua sepultura, na capela do Espírito Santo do convento de São Francisco do Funchal, que manda edificar;
ii) construção, ornato e posterior manutenção da dita capela do Espírito Santo: com abóbada e da melhor pedra e cantaria, colocar um monumento de pedra com letreiro, as armas de seu pai (escudo e cota de armas, que descreve), um rótulo, uma imagem de Santa Ana, um retábulo que manda comprar «que seja rico» (f. 10), um missal de pergaminho para o altar, frontais, vestimentas (uma bordada com as armas do pai) e paramentos vários (cálices, galhetas, campainha, cruz de prata dourada para as procissões de finados); ainda uma caixa com armários para guardar as vestimentas e ornamentos destinados a dizer missa diária, sendo que os restantes ornamentos estariam em poder dos testamenteiros e o capelão teria uma chave;
iii) uma missa cantada em dia do Espírito Santo;
iv) um resgate anual de um cativo da terra dos mouros, com a condição do liberto vir à sua capela do Espírito Santo, onde lhe dariam de vestir e comer durante cinco dias e 1.000 réis para despesas, mas o cativo assistiria nesses dias às missas e rezaria 5 pai-nossos e ave-marias pelas Chagas de Cristo, outros sete pelas sete dores do Espírito Santo e outras sete ave-marias à honra da Assunção da Virgem;
v) 10.000 réis anuais para casar uma moça órfã “pobre e de boa fama”. Metade dos bens da instituidora são reservados para a sua alma, pois não tem herdeiros. Por ocasião da primeira tomada de contas, em 1626, diz-se que o administrador desta capela tem a
obrigação de despender 87.500 réis cada ano (vol. 1, f. 3).
REDUÇÃO DE ENCARGOS: a informação do escrivão da Provedoria dos Resíduos e Capelas, datada de 1819-05-04, (2.º vol., f. 67) refere que esta capela, em virtude da redução de 1814-03-20, ficou com a obrigação anual de cem mil réis para dotes, dez missas rezadas e uma missa em dia de Finados. Em 1819-01-28 (2.º vol., f. 68-74) o administrador João Carvalhal Esmeraldo Vasconcelos Bettencourt
obtém indulto apostólico de componenda das pensões caídas das capelas que administra.
SUCESSÃO: determina que o marido entre na posse e usufruto de todos os seus bens e, casando, reparta com o sobrinho Gaspar de Bettencourt. No primeiro testamento, determinava que o sobrinho Gaspar nomearia o segundo sucessor e este nomearia o terceiro e assim sucessivamente, havendo o administrador 1/6 do rendimento dos bens «de seis hum» (f. 12). No codiclo altera a ordem de sucessão: por falecimento de Gaspar sucederia seu filho primogénito, e sempre de filho a neto, por linha direita; na falta de descendentes do dito Gaspar de Bettencourt ou filho lidimo, ficaria ao parente mais chegado por linha direita do sobrinho, mas sempre com a anuência do marido da testadora.
CONDIÇÕES: quando «fosse achado que o filho maior não hera para semilhante carrego emtam mando que fique outro segundo» (f. 21); aos testamenteiros seriam tomadas contas por el-rei, segundo a ordenação e regimento do reino, e em caso de incumprimento seria colocado outro testamenteiro «pessoa apta e pertensente para ter o dito carrego e seja morador em esta ilha» (f. 13). É primeiro administrador o dito Gaspar de Bettencourt, depois o filho primogénito deste, Henrique de Bettencourt.
BENS VINCULADOS: toma para sua alma a metade dos seus bens móveis e de raiz para cumprimento do que dispõe (f. 10 v.º-11), o remanescente os testamenteiros o gastariam e despenderiam em obras piedosas e meritórias (f. 16). Estes bens nunca se venderiam nem diminuiriam em nenhum tempo.
SUB-ROGAÇÃO DE BENS: o tombo dos bens (2.º vol., f. 23/42 v.º), feito em 1562-07-09, identifica todos os bens e respetivas confrontações. Também as verbas de sub-rogação, a seguir enumeradas, identificam bens desta capela:
2.º vol., f. 77/78 - Sub-rogação do capital de um foro de 5.300 réis e outro de 1.500 réis, impostos em terrenos na rua de São Francisco, Sé, trocados por benfeitorias livres no sítio do Palheiro Ferreiro, São Gonçalo. Termo de 1848-12-23.
2.º vol., f. 78 v.º/80 - Sub-rogação de três propriedades pertencentes a esta capela, sitas nas freguesias de Santo António (na Penteada) e São Roque (na Achada), no valor total de 2.030.640 réis, trocadas por igual valor em benfeitorias livres do palácio da rua do Peru, pertencente aos Condes de Carvalhal. Termo de 1859-02-10.

TESTAMENTEIROS: o marido e o sobrinho Gaspar de Bettencourt, fidalgo da casa d’el-rei, que receberiam em sua vida, respetivamente, 15.000 réis e 10.000 réis anuais pelo trabalho. Abertura do testamento requerida pelos sobrinhos Gonçalo Vaz “o Moço”, escudeiro e João Rodrigues, escudeiro. Os testamenteiros requerem o traslado do testamento em 1493-11-30.
PROPRIEDADES: i) possui a saboaria de toda a ilha da Madeira, ora arrendada a António Espínola, a qual era de seu pai «Mice Missiote», por conta de 20.000 réis que o infante D. Henrique lhe tinha dado de juro pela ilha de Lançarote, ii) possui a Lombada da Ponta do Sol, ora arrendada a João Esmeraldo.
LEGADOS: 4.000 réis para o campanário da igreja de São Miguel; 10.000 réis para o mosteiro de Santa Maria; 100.000 réis para o enxoval de Beatriz Rodrigues da Câmara, filha de seu marido, procedentes de uma dívida de «hum milham de dinheiro que nos deve Janes Esmeraldo» (codicilo).
ESCRAVOS: i) ao mosteiro de São Francisco lega «um bom escravo para servir o mosteiro»; ii) liberta os seguintes escravos: Sintra, Antão Taleiga(?), João Gonçalves Branco, Lourencinha e sua irmã Filipa; iii) determina que a mãe das escravas Lourencinha e Filipa sirva nas obras da igreja de Santa Maria da ilha de São Miguel; iv) determina que a escrava Catarina, que estava com o galego, servisse no hospital da mesma ilha.

ENTERRAMENTO: no testamento ordenava que a enterrassem na capela mor do convento de São Francisco do Funchal, pedindo-se licença ao proprietário Luís Álvares, sendo que os seus ossos seriam depois trasladados para a capela que mandara edificar, o mesmo sucedendo com as ossadas de seu pai e mãe (que se trariam de Lanzarote). No codicilo manda sepultar-se na igreja do arcanjo São Miguel.
LITERACIA: a testadora não assina o testamento e codicilo, os quais são respetivamente redigidos por Frei Afonso e Frei Henrique, confessor da mesma.
O processo está dividido em três volumes com numeração autónoma.
O 1.º vol. contém, nomeadamente:
F. 2 a 4v.º - quitações do cumprimento desta capela relativas aos anos de 1622 a 1626, então sob a administração de Gaspar de Bettencourt, que sucedeu ao irmão Rui Dias de Aguiar;
F. 5 - Embargo de um foro de 75.000 reis anuais da Lombada da Ponta do Sol, para deles se fazer um lampadário de prata para a capela do Espírito Santo;
F. 7 - Petição do padre Manuel de Carvalho, do Porto Santo, datada de 1624, a requer ao administrador desta capela 20.000 réis para o resgate de sua sobrinha Luzia de Ornelas, viúva de Pedro Bogalho, cativa em Argel;
F. 9 - Outra petição do mesmo padre, datada de 1625, a requerer o resgate de outra sobrinha Luzia de Gouveia, filha de João de Viveiros, sargento-mor da ilha do Porto Santo, e de sua mulher Maria de Gouveia, também cativa em Argel;
F. 11 - Petição de Simoa Dias para se proceder ao resgate do filho Manuel Martins. Na folha seguinte, quitação de 1626-03-16, feita na rua dos Mercadores, na loja de fancaria de Simoa Dias, de como recebeu o resgate;
F. 13 - Quitação de Francisco Gomes, natural da ilha do Porto Santo, de como recebeu a quantia de 20.000 réis para o resgate de seu filho Manuel. 1626-03-18;

Will by which Álvaro Gonçalves and Isabel Fernandes, his wife, express their wish to be buried in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa. They appoint the one of them who survives as the other's heir and executor.
Álvaro Gonçalves orders the foundation of a chapel with a perpetual obligation of masses celebrated every year in at the altar of Nossa Senhora da Conceição of that convent. He appoints Iria Gonçalves, his niece, as his heir, if he dies before his wife.
Isabel Fernandes orders the foundation of a chapel with a perpetual obligation of masses celebrated every year at the same altar. She appoints Amador Fernandes, her nephew, as her heir, if she dies before her husband.
Followed by an approval deed (dated 1493-06-01) and an opening deed of will (dated 1498-05-17).

Will of Ana de Figueiredo Castelo Branco founding a chapel of 16 annual masses and appointing as her successor her niece, Francisca Brandoa, daughter of Ana de Figueiredo, her niece, and her husband, Luís de Sousa Brandão, who are their universal heirs until their daughter can administrate. She also appoints Francisca Brandoa as her successor in another chapel of 8 masses she owns, with assets in Alcains.

Will made by Ana Martins de Benevides in which she ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual mass obligation of ten masses celebrated every year in the church of N. Sra. da Conceição of S. Francisco's convent, in Vila Franca do Campo, where her body should be buried. She named her husband António Ramalho as first administrator and after his death their daughter Cecília Ramalho, wife of Manuel Lopes Henriques. After her death, the administration of the entail should continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir.

Will by which Amaro de Cerqueira, mercador, establishes a chapel in the church of S. Nicolau of Lisboa, entailing the third part of his assets and the legitimates which belonged to his son, including houses in Lisboa. He appoints Manuel Cerqueira de Campos, his son, to be its first administrator, obligating him and his descendants to support the celebration of a daily mass for his soul in that church, where his body would be buried, inside the grave of the brotherhood of the Santíssimo Sacramento.

Will of António Borges da Costa founding an entail in Ponta Delgada with his available portion and with the obligation of a half of a chapel and appointing his wife, D. Maria da Câmara, as his heir and, after her death, his three religious daughters and, after their death, his granddaughter, D. Ana. The testator also appoints his son, Duarte Borges da Câmara as his successor in the entails (terças) of João Gonçalves and João de Arruda Botelho (or da Costa), his grandfathers, Amador da Costa de Arruda, Álvaro da Costa, his uncle, Manuel da Costa, his uncle. He also appoints him as his successor in some properties, included those entailed by Margarida Mendes, his aunt, which are administrated by the testator.
Will approved in 1648-03-22 and opened in 1648-03-24.

Will by which Gonçalo Vaz de Castelo Branco, Vedor da Fazenda do Rei, who was about to embark for Arzila, declared he wanted to establish a chapel in the church of Santo Elói of Lisboa, where his body would be buried. He entailed to it properties in Mafra, determining that its revenues would support the celebration of 3 annual masses for his soul.

Will by which Guiomar Afonso, Álvaro Esteves' widow, bequeaths an olive grove in Alporche, Lisboa, to Lopo Rodrigues, oleiro, her niece's husband, with the obligation of supporting the celebration of annual masses for her soul in the church of Santa Maria Madalena of Lisboa. The testator declares that her body should be interred in the grave where her husband is buried, inside that church.

Will by which Guiomar de Sampaio, widow of Pedro de Albuquerque, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, ordered the friars of the convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça to celebrate 4 annual masses for her soul in perpetuity. Those pious obligations would be supported with the revenues of a farmstead she owned in the outskirts of Lisboa ("quinta de Santa Catarina de Ribamar"). She designated her son, Jorge de Albuquerque, to administrate that entail, obligating him and his descendants to support the celebration of the masses. After her son's death, the entail would be transmitted to one of his children. She determined that her body had to be buried in that convent, in the chapel where her husband lied.

Will by which Isabel de Melo establishes a chapel in the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa, entailing to it her farmstead (quinta), the Moinho do Botelho, a public debt instrument of 9 600 réis in Almoxarifado de Santarém, and a public debt instrument of 8 000 réis in Casa da Mercearia de Lisboa. She appoints her cousin, Diogo de Melo de Castelo Branco, to be the first administrator of her entail, ordering him to support the celebration of a daily mass for her soul. She chooses to be buried in the church of the referred convent, in her grandfather's chapel, Amador Vaz de Sampaio. She asks the executors of her will to restore that chapel and to place in it an altarpiece with the image of the holy spirit. Her parents' mortal remains, which lied in the convent of S. Francisco of Xabregas, should be transferred and interred alongside those of her daughter. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1514-07-08 and an opening deed issued on 1514-07-19.

He asked the executors of the will to guarantee that both of them married according with their status, as soon as possible. The testator determined that his body had to be buried in the church of S. Cristóvão of Lisboa.

Will by which Beatriz Maria, Martinho Gonçalves do Souto's widow, asked the executors of her will to buy a chapel in a church or convent of their choice (preferably in the church of S. Roque or in the church of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires), where 2 perpetual daily masses should be celebrated, as it was demanded by her late husband in his will. He had entailed to it 2 public debt instruments of 240 000 réis. She designated Capitão Francisco Gomes, her husband's nephew, as the chapel's next administrator.
The testator instituted 3 daily perpetual masses in that chapel, ordering the executors - Baltasar Pires da Grã, Miguel Fernandes de Sousa, Frei Gregório de Jesus, Francisco Mendes de Barros, António Antunes and Frei Jerónimo Coelho - to support their celebration with the revenues of a public debt instrument of 165 000 réis or of her properties. They were obligated to administrate that entail and to spend, each year, 100 000 réis in the ransom of portuguese captives in África. After the death of all the executors, the chapel and the remaining assets belonging to the testator would be administrated by Santa Casa da Misericórdia. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1673-12-29 and an opening deed issued on 1674-01-12.

Will by which Maria de Vilalobos, wife of Aires de Maiorga, establishes an entail with her properties, which she bequeaths her husband, during his lifetime. After her husband's death, the chapel shall be administered by Diogo de Vilalobos, her nephew, and his successors, with an obligation of two weekly masses for her soul, one for the soul of licenciado Diogo de Vilalobos, her brother, and another for the soul of Catarina de Vilalobos, her sister.

Will made by João Missel, o Gigante, in which he ordered the foundation of a chapel devoted to Santo António with a perpetual pious obligation of one mass celebrated in every month, for which he entailed one cotton field, a land and twenty couples of amerindians, that should be freed and doctrinated on this very chapel, working for the maintenance of the masses and administrators. To administrate it, he named his daughter Virgínia Missel and her husband António Pereira de Azevedo and their descendants. The institutor also disposed that the local clergy and ecclesial visitadores should inspect the chapel and observe if the amerindians were being doctrinated and kept in the numbers that he disposed.

Will of Vasco Lourenço Coelho and Leonor Fernandes, his wife. They institute a chapel, invoking Sto. André, in the church of Santa Cruz da Praia, on the island of Terceira. They entail assets to fulfill charges. They appoint Pedro Eanes de Acere, their compadre, the first administrator. He had to appoint the successor, which must not be a nobleman, knight or squire.

Will by which Diogo Pires ordered to be buried in the Monastery of São Francisco de Évora. He established an entail, incorporating one moio and half of cereal taken from his "herdade da Bodoeira" and "herdade da Bala" in order to fulfil the pious obligations in that monastery. He designated his daughter Catarina Dias to be its first administrator, and her husband João Moxinho should succeed her. After his death, it should succeed the institutor's grandson.

Will of Diogo de Palma and Elvira de Salazar, his wife, ordering their grave in the chapel of Madre de Deus, in the church of São Nicolau of Lisboa. They allocate the majority of a third of their assets, after their daughters' marriage dowries have been fulfilled. From a third of the assets, they entail some houses, in Lisboa, on Rua das Mudas, to fulfill the charges celebrated in that chapel and appoint Fernando Dias de Palma, their son and executor, as first administrator. He was to name the next administrator from among his sons and daughters. An exemplification of the will had to be given to the beneficiados of São Nicolau, who would keep the houses in the event of non-fulfillment of the charges.
Diogo de Palma was administrator of the chapel of Fernando Velho, appointing Fernando Dias de Palma, his son and executor, to administer it. If he died childless, he would nominate Beatriz Teixeira, his sister, to succeed him, or his children if she had already died.

Will of Brásia Varela, by which she orders her grave in the church of the monastery of São Domingos of Évora, where rests Brásia Fernandes, her grandmother. She establishes another chapel, by entailing three vineyards, located on the outskirts of Évora, for the fulfillment of pious charges celebrated in the Capela das Virgens in the monastery of São Domingos de Évora, to be administrated by Beatriz Nunes, her niece, followed by her eldest son or daughter.
In addition, she establishes a chapel, by entailing the income of other farms and other assets located in Évora and surroundings, for the fulfillment of charges celebrated in the Capela das Virgens, in the monastery of São Domingos de Évora, to be administrated by Brásia, daughter of Beatriz Nunes, her niece, followed by her eldest son or daughter.
She establishes another chapel, by entailing a moio and three alqueires of income from the Romeira's farm (herdade) to fulfill the pious charges celebrated in the Capela das Virgens, in that monastery, to be administrated by Isabel, daughter of Beatriz Nunes, her niece, followed by her eldest son or daughter.

Will made by Pedro Rol de Velez, in which he ordered the foundation of an entail with a perpetual mass obligation of masses celebrated every year in the feasts of Christ, of the Virgin Mary and the Holy apostles in Portalegre. He named his brother Francisco Rol de Velez as first administrator of the entail and, preferably, his eldest male heirs after him. If he died without children, the administration should be handled to his sister Isabel Velez, and after her death to his nephew Mateus Lourenço de Velez. If Mateus died without heirs, the administration should be given to his wife Mariana da Silva during her lifetime, and after her death to the Misericórdia of Portalegre.

Will of Vasco Esteves founding a chapel with two daily masses in the monastery of São Francisco de Estremoz, where he will be buried, appointing his wife Margarida Vicente for executor. If she marries again or die, the executor will be his cousin João Eanes and João Miguéis.

Will of António Monteiro, made in Macau. The document contains extensive information about António's commercial activities in China, India and Timor. The testator wishes to establish a chapel in the Monastery of S. Francisco do Porto, dedicated to "Nossa Senhora dos Anjos da Porciúncula". After his death, the entail should be transmitted tot their grandson João Freire, son of Maria Vaz, and another of their grandchildren after his death. And from there on the succession should always continue on the eldest male heir. Before assuming the administration, the sons of the institutors all agreed in abdicating of their own available portions, that should be otherwise entailed on the entail.

Will made by which Pedro Afonso, resident in Arronches, founded an entail with a vineyard he owned in Vale de Manes, designating his stepdaughter, Catarina Gonçalves, to administrate it. She and her descendants were obligated to support the celebration of three masses every year. If she died without leaving offspring, she would be succeeded by her husband Cristóvão Fernandes.

Will made by João da Ponte Cabreira and his wife Ana Fernandes, in which they ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual obligation of 120 masses celebrated every year in the mother church of Arronches. They named their grandson João da Ponte Cabreira as first administrator, with the condition that he would marry a woman of clean blood, and one of his children after his death, and from there on the succession should continue on his descendants. If he had no children, the administration would be handled to the Misericórdia of Arronches.

Will made by padre Vasco Rodrigues Cabreira in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual obligation of 250 masses celebrated every year in the church of N. Sra. da Conceição de Arronches, where a lamp should be kept perpetually lit. Those masses should be celebrated with two special prayers, the "Inclina por macho e de quae sumus por femea" and "Fidelium por muitos". He named his brother Fernando Rodrigues Pontes as first administrator during his lifetime. And after his death, the properties entailed to the chapel should be splitted in two parts that should be given to his nephews Duarte Rodrigues and Manuel Vaz, who would share the administration of this chapel with the condition that each of them would order the perpetual celebration of 125 masses every year. From there on the succession of each branch of the administration should continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. In the lack of descendants from Duarte or Manuel, the administration would be handled to the heirs of the other, and in the lack of descendants from both, it should be handled to padre Gaspar da Ponte during his lifetime and to the Misericórdia after his death. No administrator could ever marry a person of "infected race".

Will of Beatriz Álvares, instituting an entail with pious obligations in several churches in Braga. She appointed Mamede da Costa as administrator, and he should be succedeed by one of his children.

Will of Gaspar da Rocha Pais. The testator orders that his body be buried in front of the altar of S. António. His bones would later be transferred to the mother church of Viana and buried next to his parents and grandparents. As he had no forced heirs, he decided to make his nephew Francisco da Rocha, son of his sister Catarina da Rocha Pais, his universal heir, excluding all other relatives from his inheritance, especially his sister Susana da Rocha for the wrongs she had done to him and their father. His nephew and heir was also appointed administrator of the hospital founded by João Pais o Velho, in which Gaspar had also succeeded his father. Gaspar da Rocha Pais states that he built a hermitage in his Deocriste manor, dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, to which he bequeathed property and ornaments. He had already obtained a provision authorising the celebration of masses in this hermitage. The chapel and the estate of Deocriste were to be entailed and owned by the same person. His nephew, Francisco da Rocha, was appointed administrator, to be followed by his descendants, giving preference to first-born sons and excluding illegitimate children and clerics. The administrators were obliged to use the family name of Rocha Pais.

Will of Beatriz de Paiva appointing Gregório Botelho, her nephew, as the administrator of the chapel of twelve masses founded by her and her late husband, Fernando Carvalho, in Misericórdia of Guarda. After Gregório Botelho's death, the succession in the chapel's administration should follow the foundation deed clauses.
Will approved in 1604-02-17 and opened in 1606-05-12.

Paiva, Beatriz de (d.1606)

Will by which Gregório Botelho expresses his wish to be buried in the cathedral of Braga. He bequeaths Brás, his son, a vineyard with a wine press in Touro, a farmstead in Vale de Carros, lands in Gonçalo and Avelãs and other properties, entailing them in a chapel, with the pious obligation of 20 masses. After Brás' death, the chapel will return to Gregório Botelho's heir, with the same pious obligation. The testator also appoints Mariana, his niece and daughter of Francisco de Paiva, his brother, to succeed him in the chapel founded by Fernando Carvalho and Beatriz de Paiva, his uncle and aunt. Mariana will own the chapel until a relative of Fernando Carvalho marries to a relative of Beatriz de Paiva, as they determined in their chapel's foundation deed.

Botelho, Gregório (d.1628)

Will of António de Melo and D. Catarina, his wife, ordering the foundation of their chapel, as determined in their entail foundation deed, by Cristóvão de Melo within two years after the death of the last one. They also reduce the pious obligation from 24 annual masses to 12 annual masses. In everything else they ratify their entail foundation deed and order its fulfilment. At last, the testators want that their chapel is founded in the chapel of the church of S. Sebastião of Ramirão.

Will made by Inês Gaspar in which she ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail, composed of some lands in Alter do Chão's outskirts, with a perpetual obligation of five masses celebrated every year. She named her cousin Gaspar Gil as first administrator and his of wife after his death, and from there on the succession should continue on his descendants. The administrators were obliged to give half alqueire of oil to the brotherhoods of Santíssimo Sacramento, Misericórdia and Espírito Santo in every year to lit their lamps.

Will made by Inês Barreto, in which she ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail composed of some houses in Alter do Chão, with a perpetual obligation of two masses celebrated every year. She named her brother André Gil as first administrator and after her death each one of her relatives would administrate the entail during three years, and then would handle the administration to the closest relative, starting by the closest male relatives.

Will of Pedro a Grã. The testator orders that his body be buried in the church of Santiago da Cividade. Later, his bones were to be transferred to the place he had reserved for them in the chapel he had founded in that church. He left several pious instructions, such as masses to be celebrated in the monastery of São Domingos do Porto for the souls of his parents, and money to clothe 12 poor people. Pedro da Grã named his brother Manuel da Grã as his heir and executor of his will.

Afonso would appoint a person to succeed him on the administration and from there on the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir.

He named his cousin, Maria Abril as first administrator of the entail, with the condition that she would appoint one of her children to succeed her, and from there on the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest heir. If Maria had no children, the administration should be handled to Isabel de Monroy, sister of the institutor, with the same conditions.

He designated his niece Beatriz, daughter of his brother Diogo Manhãs, to become the entail's first administrator, determining that she would have to annex the third part of her assets to it. If she died without heirs, she would be succeeded by her father or her siblings Catarina or Diogo. The testator declared that his body had to be buried in the main church of Alter do Chão.

He designated his grandson, Diogo Manhãs, to administrate it, obligating him and his descendants to support the celebration of 2 annual masses in perpetuity. If his grandson died without leaving offspring, the administration of the entail would be delivered to his brothers, Belchior Freme and Álvaro Preto. The testator determined that his body had to be buried in the main church of Alter do Chão, in the grave where lied his grandparents.

Will by which Catarina Eanes established an entail with her assets and the estate she had inherited from her brother, Afonso Garcia, including properties in Cabeça do Ferreiro, Fonte do Ferreiro, Pisão de João Nunes, Fonte do Vale da Pia, Fonte do Espinheiro, Fonte de Botinhos, Alter do Chão. She designated her brother, Manuel Garcia, to administrate it, obligating him and his heirs to celebrate 6 annual masses in perpetuity. If her brother did not appoint someone to succeed him, the entail would be transmitted to Beatriz Garcia, her sister, and subsequently to André Gil, her other brother. The testator declared that her body had to be buried in the main church of Alter do Chão, where lied her father.

Eanes, Catarina (d.1625)

Will made by Beatriz Garcia Mendes, in which she ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual mass obligation of one daily mass celebrated in the chapel of N. Sra. do Rosário, in the mother church of Alter do Chão. She named her nephew padre Cristóvão da Silva as first administrator, during his lifetime, and her nephew Vasco Garcia Leitão after his death. Vasco would be succeeded by her nephew João Nunes do Carvalhal and his descendants after him. If her bloodline was extinguished, then the administration would be given to the Misericórdia of Alter do Chão, and if they could not inherit it, then the poor people assisted by the Misericórdia would have it, because she made clear that no King or Governor could ever succeed on the administration in case that it became vacant. She also freed an enslaved woman named Maria and named her administrator of an entailed forrageal that had a perpetual mass obligation of four masses celebrated every year. After the death of Maria, the administration should be given to the same administrator of the entail and chapel that she founded.

Will of André Gonçalves instituting an entail with pious obligations in the chapel of Santo António, in Braga cathedral's cloister. The first administrator should be his sister Catarina Duarte, followed by his niece, also named Catarina Duarte. His niece should marry according his sister's will, under the penalty of losing her right to the administration. In the event of kin lines extinction, the brotherhood of Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia was charged to choose a poor and virtuous female orphan to enjoy the entail's revenues and ensure its pious obligations during her life, after which the brotherhood should appointing another orphan.

Will made by Maria Velez in which she expressed her wish to be buried in the convent of S. Francisco of Portalegre. She established two entails, each one with a perpetual obligation of nine annual masses celebrated. The first entail would be composed of her houses in Portalegre and should be administrated by her husband Manuel Gonçalves and after his death by her brother João Velez. The second entail would be composed of a vineyard and should be administrated by her brother Brás Velez. After the death of the assigned administrators, the succession should always continue, preferably, on a female daughter appointed by the last administrator. If any male descendant wished to became a clergyman, he would have the permission to use the entailed assets as a dowry. The Provedor of Portalegre should take account of the administration every year.

They named one another as administrators of the entail with the condition that the last one remaining should appoint the next administrator, chosing a close relative of the institutor's bloodline, with the same condition.

Will made by padre João de Miranda in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail composed of properties in Reguengos and Arronches. He named António Mendes Invenções as first administrator with the condition that he would keep a quarter of those properties’ income for himself and the other three quarters would be spent with the celebration of masses for the institutor's soul. After the death of António Mendes Invenções, the entail should be administrated by Isabel Tavares, and after her death the succession would always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. However, if any of Isabel's children wished to become a clergyman, he would be preferred on the administration, using the proceeds of the entailed properties to order himself priest.
