Dowry deed

Dowry deed by which Luís Álvares de Almeida, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, and D. Francisca de Morais, his wife, gave a dowry appraised at 5 000 cruzados, which comprised a captaincy of a carrack in Índia and an annual pension of 20 000 réis, to D. Bernarda de Almeida, their daughter, who was going to marry D. Francisco Telo de Meneses. They also declared that, after their deaths, D. Bernarda and her husband would inherit their farmstead in Adarse, Alverca, and that the third part of their assets would be bequeathed to D. Catarina de Almeida, their daughter. After her death, that estate would be delivered to her sister, D. Bernarda. The donors established an entail with the third part of their assets and the legitime belonging to their daughter, determining that the farmstead in Adarse should never be sold or exchanged. The entail had to be passed to one of D. Bernarda and D. Francisco's sons. Its future administrators had to support the celebration of 12 annual masses in an unidentified church. If the couple left no offspring, the entail would be transmitted to D. António de Meneses de Almeida, the donors' son. D. Catarina de Almeida gave her consent to this deed.
