Scope and content

Will chart of Afonso da Cunha, capitão-mor de Alvor. He determined that his body had to be buried in the grave of Álvaro de Ataíde, since his chapel was being built at that moment in Nossa Senhora do Rosário, Alvor. His wife, Guiomar Simões, would be responsible for choosing the patron saint of the chapel, where the testator's remains would be deposited and a weekly perpetual mass would be celebrated for his soul. The future administrators of that chapel would be obligated to maintain it and to preserve its ornaments.
The institutor established another chapel, entailing to it all the assets he had inherited from Aldonça de Arvelos, his cousin, namely two watermills in Lagos, houses on Rua de Pedro Borges, in that city, and unspecified rents (foros). The revenues of those properties would support the celebration of a perpetual mass every friday wherever his body would be buried. He designated his wife to administrate it, asking her to entail the houses in which they lived in Alvor to the chapel. She would be succeeded by her nephew, Francisco de Freitas, who would transmit it to his eldest son.
Followed by an approval deed, issued on 1592-07-09, a codicil from 1592-07-17 and the approval deed of the codicil, issued on 1592-07-17.
