Scope and content

Entail and chapel foundation deed by Simão de Medeiros and Isabel Gomes. The couple declares not having children, stating that their will was to entail their estates, formed by houses in Porto and rural assets in the outskirts of the city. The property was to be owned by a single person in the manner of a "morgado". A part of the income should be channelled to the monastery of Madre de Deus de Monchique, in Porto, where they have previously negotiated the institution of a chapel, a site of burial for themselves and their descendants, to be called the "Chapel of the Medeiros". Their son Teodoro de Medeiros was already buried there, and the institutor’s coat of arms was to be placed on the wall. If the chapel wasn't accepted by the provincial of the order, the administrator of the entail was to transfer the remains of the institutor to the convent of S. Bento de Avé Maria in Porto, where Simão's parents were buried. The surviving member of the couple would be the first administrator. After them, the administrator was to be recruited from among Simão's relatives, and was to be a male, excluding clerics, illegitimate children and those who had committed crimes against God and the King. The first administrator would be obliged to register the deed of foundation in the records of the Provedoria of Porto, and his successors would have to entail more property when they took possession of the entail.
