Chapel foundation deed

Chapel foundation deed by Pedro Afonso Leiro and his wife Madalena Gonçalves. The couple lived in Olinda, in the captaincy of Pernambuco, but wanted to establish a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres in the church of São Pedro de Covelo, with a weekly and perpetual mass every Saturday in honour of the Virgin. To this end, they left 200,000 réis for the chapel, which had already been given to João Gonçalves. The income from the estates was to be divided into three parts: one third for the administrator, one third for the chaplain and the rest for the ornaments of the chapel. The couple also ordered a small safe to be placed in a recess in the wall, where the documents would be kept. The safe was to have three copies of its key: one for the administrator, one for the chaplain and one for the parish priest.
