Letter of quittance

Letter of quittance issued by padre Francisco do Padre, vigário on the church of Santa Maria de Val de Torno, certifying that he had received the alms left by Afonso Lopes, institutor of the chapel, since 1618 until 1621, from the hands of Geraldo do Prado, administrator of the chapel, and since 1622 until 1623, from the hands of Francisco Martins de Carvalho d’Egas, depositary of the assets of the chapel. He also declared that Geraldo do Prado succeeded on the administration on the year of 1618, and that there was no vault, nor foundation deed, nor tombo of the chapel in that mother-church, only a plaque with the memory and record of the 20 yearly masses obligation.

Acórdão em relação declaring that the chapel founded by Afonso Lopes was vacant to the Crown, and that it should maintain its 20 yearly mass obligation, and add 5 more masses, and the rest of the income should belong to the administrator instead of the third part. The desembargadores ordered that the administrators should make and conserve a book for the record of the masses.

Acórdão em relação sentencing the chapel founded by Afonso Lopes was vacant to the Crown, once Geraldo do Prado, defendant had presented no documents proving the contrary, administrating it without a royal administration letter, in succession of his grandfather, João do Prado, who also administrated it without royal administration letter. Geraldo do Prado should then pledge an oath regarding the inexistence of the entail foundation deed and after that he should receive the administration letter.
