Dowry deed

Dowry deed by which doutor Manuel de Oliveira, do Conselho do Rei and juíz da Mesa da sua Fazenda, makes a donation of 14 000 cruzados to Jorge de Melo da Cunha, who was to marry his daughter, D. Maria de Oliveira. Jorge de Melo da Cunha promises that, if he dies before his future wife, part of the dowry that shall be returned to her shall come from the revenue of a casal named Formiguais, in Santarém, entailed to the chapel of António Durães. He had inherited this chapel from his father, Álvaro da Cunha. This casal had been in possession of his sister, D. Joana de Noronha, but Jorge de Melo had exchanged it for part of the dowry he now received.
Contains chancery record of a provision, dated 1578-05-22 (the original from 1578-04-24), and affidavit dated 1578-04-24. Mentions another dowry deed dated 1578-01-03.

Followed by two codicils. Only the second one refers to the chapel.

Will (extract)

Will (extract) by which Álvaro da Cunha, grandson of Gonçalo Vaz de Melo, mestre-sala do rei D. Afonso V, declares that he is the administrator of the chapel established by António Durães, which he inherited from his grandfather, who was appointed administrator in 1471. He revokes a previous donation he had made to his daughter, D. Joana de Noronha, married to D. Bernardo de Noronha, through a dowry deed issued in 1554-09-13, of a casal named Formigais, in Sintra, which was entailed to the chapel. He orders instead that this casal shall be re-annexed to the chapel and given to his son, Jorge de Melo, who he appoints as his successor, and who shall appoint his eldest son as next administrator.
