Will (extract)

Will (extract) by which Gaspar de Araújo e Sousa bequeathed all his properties in the island of S. Tomé to Gaspar de Sousa Lobo, his nephew, determining that he should establish a chapel in his honour in the convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça or in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa. If that was not possible, it would be erected in the monastery of S. Bento of that city. The heir had the obligation of buying a public debt instrument to support the celebration of annual masses.

Contract and bond deed

Contract and bond deed signed by the friars of the monastery of S. Bento of Lisboa and João de Almada de Melo, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei and Comendador da Ordem de Cristo, through which they gave him and his successors the chapel of S. Bernardo, where the remains of Gaspar de Araújo e Sousa and of the administrators of his entail would, henceforth, be deposited. João de Almada de Melo, who was the nephew of Gaspar de Sousa Lobo and succeeded him in the administration of Gaspar de Araújo e Sousa's entail, was obligated to finish the construction of the chapel and to leave a public debt instrument of 54 000 réis to the monastery. Its revenues would support the celebration of a perpetual annual mass for the institutor's soul. Contains a consent deed issued by D. Filipa de Sousa, wife of the entail's administrator.
