Citation letter

Citation letter in which Francisco Mendes, administrator of the entail and chapel founded by Sebastião Mendes Canto, agreed, in the presence of the Provedor das Capelas and of cónego Afonso Dias, executor of the will made by the institutor, to increase the perpetual pious legacies of the entail in barely five masses, as the revenue of the entailed properties was not enough not even to pay for the 85 perpetual masses disposed by the institutor. From there on, the administrators of the entail would be obliged to order the perpetual celebration of 90 masses every year.

Mendes, Francisco (flor.1656)

Codicil

Codicil made by the deceased Sebastião Mendes Canto, in which he annexed a property with vineyard, orchard and water reservoirs to the entail he founded on his will, and increased the perpetual masses obligation to 85 masses. He also mentioned that 200.000 réis were owed to him by several persons, and after those debts were payed the money should be spent in real state properties, over which the administrators would impose more pious obligations.

Canto, Sebastião Mendes (d.1635)

Dispatch

Dispatch issued by the Provedor das Capelas of Portalegre, approving the petition made by cónego Afonso Dias, and summoning padre Francisco Mendes, administrator of the entail founded by Sebastião Mendes Canto to declare in how many masses he would increase the pious legacies of the entail.

Evaluation deed

Evaluation deed made by order of the Provedor das Capelas of Portalegre, in which the Avaliadores e Partidores evaluated a property that belonged to the chapel founded by Sebastião Mendes Canto in 200.000 réis, even though it was worth 150.000 by the time that it was purchased and entailed by the institutor.

Petition

Petition made by cónego Afonso Dias, executor of the will made by Sebastião Mendes Canto, in which he asked the Provedor das Capelas to reform some court proceedings that he prepared, and that have been lost by the escrivão das capelas e resíduos, who fled the country, in order to give account of his obligations as executor of the will, particularlly on the disposition left on the codicil of the institutor where he mentioned several debts owed to him should be applied on the purchase of real estate properties to the chapel, with the condition that the executor of the will would increase the masses obligation as he saw fit. Afonso Dias asked the Provedor to summon the administrator of the chapel in order to settle in their presences the quantity of masses that would be added to the entail's pious obligations.

Will

Will made by Sebastião Mendes Canto, in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail and chapel with a perpetual obligation of sixty masses celebrated every year on the chapel of N. Sra. do Rosário of S. Lourenço's church, in Portalegre, where his body should be buried. His descendants could also be buried in the chapel if they wished so. He named his nephew Francisco, son of his niece Ana Mendes, as first administrator of the entail during his lifetime, and, after his death, the succession would always continue on the eldest male heir. If Francisco became a clergyman or if he died without heirs, the administration should be transmitted to his male brothers, preferably the eldest after him, or his sisters. In the lack of descendants of Ana Mendes, the administration would be handled to the Misericórdia of Portalegre, with the same conditions. All administrators would be obliged to annex up to 20.000 réis of their own reserved portion to the entail. The administrators should give account not to the Provedor das Capelas, but directly to the Prior of S. Lourenço's church. Anyone who committed crimes of lese-majeste would lose the administration of the entail.
