Contract and bond deed

Contract and bond deed by which the friars of the convent of S. Bento da Saúde of Lisboa gave the chapel of Santa Escolástica to António Gomes de Elvas, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, which was destined to be the burial place of his remains and the bodies of his successors. António was obligated to buy 2 public debt instruments: one, of 20 000 réis, would pay for the donation of the chapel; the other, of 30 000 réis, would support the celebration of a daily perpetual mass for his soul. He and his descendants were obligated to maintain the chapel and to buy anything necessary for its preservation. He was allowed to put his coat of arms above the chapel.

Contract and bond deed

Contract and bond deed signed by the friars of the convent of S. Bento da Saúde of Lisboa and the executors of Luís Mendes de Elvas' will, Belchior Gomes de Elvas and Manuel Correia de Sousa. The executors delivered 2 contos and 492 000 réis to the convent to support the celebration of 3 perpetual daily masses for the souls of Luís Mendes de Elvas and his father, António Gomes de Elvas, and to pay for masses already celebrated in their honour. Since the executors were unable to buy a public debt instrument, they gave the money to the friars to guarantee that they bought assets to entail to the chapel, took care of its preservation and its ornaments, which are minutely described in the document. Contains a copy of a petition and a dispatch issued on 1680-08-21.
