Will (extract) of Belchior da Costa and Joana de Melo founding a chapel with the pious obligation of five masses celebrated in the church of Nossa Senhora of Covilhã.

Will (extract) of Gonçalo Dantas, parish priest in Santo André de Gondomar. The testator bequeaths several properties he owned that were to be incorporated into a chapel. The chapel had the perpetual obligation of celebrating a weekly mass every Monday for the benefit of the founder and his descendants. The first administrator would be his brother, Simão Dantas, followed by his descendants, with the exception of illegitimate children. The chaplain would preferably be a relative of the institutor, especially the poorest and least busy cleric of his lineage. Furthermore, Simão Dantas was obliged to register the documents in the "livro dos registos das capelas" in Braga, in order to preserve the information about the property and the pious duties.

Will (extract) by which Margarida de Landim, widow of Pedro Barriga, entails her houses in Fangas da Farinha, Lisboa, with an obligation of two annual masses in the chapel of Chagas of the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa. She bequeaths them to her eldest son, João Alves Barriga, and to his sucessors. If, at the time of her death, João has already died or has no male descendants, the entail shall pass to his younger brother, Gonçalo Vaz Barriga.
Followed by a note explaining that the houses entailed to this chapel were demolished by order of the king and replaced by a farmstead in Loures, according to a consignation letter and sentence from 1748.

Will (extract) by which Manuel Malheiro expresses his wish to be buried next to his first wife, D. Isabel Fernandes, and to his second wife, D. Maria Malheiro de Melo, his niece, in the chapels of Santo António and Nossa Senhora da Conceição of the cathedral of Lisboa. He confirms the institution of an entail which he had established with his first wife in a previous will, entailing to it all his properties in Azambuja, Lisboa and Corroios. He appoints as his heir António Malheiro, his second son from his second marriage, since his first born son from this marriage, José Malheiro de Melo, had died during the writing of the will. His son shall marry one of his cousins, daughter of Gaspar Malheiro, Manuel Malheiro's brother. He establishes an obligation of two daily masses for his own soul and the souls of his two wives. He also explains that he received the two chapels he now possesses from the deão António or Afonso Furtado de Mendonça, who had donated them under the condition that he should build him a tomb in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição and order a weekly mass for his soul.

Will (extract) by which Fernando Pires de Andrade, administrator of Gonçalo Pacheco and Ana Dinis' entail, asks his son and successor, Lisuarte Pires, to give, each year, 8 000 réis to the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa, in order to support the pious obligations linked to that entail and the celebration of a monthly mass for Fernando's soul. He also incorporates in that entail the third part of his assets, including the farmstead (quinta) of Cachoeiras, houses in Lisboa and a public debt instrument of 20 000 réis, which his sister gave to him. Part of the income extracted from that public debt instrument should sustain, each year and alternately, the marriage of orphan girls, the ransom of portuguese captives in Africa and the liberation of prisoners. He chooses to be buried in the chapel of S. João Evangelista, where their grandparents, parents and wife lied.

Will (extract) by which Diogo Mendes Guterres establishes an entail, incorporating in it houses in Rua das Pedras Negras, Lisboa, lands (casal) in Oeiras and the legitimates which he had inherited from his father, Gomes Dias Guterres, and grandfather, Heitor Mendes de Brito. He appoints his son, Luís Mendes, to be its first administrator and asks the executors of his will to buy a chapel in the convent of S. Bento de Xabregas, where he should be buried and there must be celebrated annual masses for his soul. If the convent does not allow that, the executors are free to make a contract with any available church.

Will (extract) by which D. Maria da Guerra, widow of Francisco de Barros de Paiva, entails her quinta in ribeira de Loures, called Casal da Freira, which she inherited from her husband, entailing it. She bequeaths it to her son, João de Barros da Silva, and afterwards to her grandson, Francisco de Barros, and their successors, with the same conditions established in her husband's will. She adds to them another obligation of five masses for her soul in her burial place, in the Chapter house of the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa. She orders that this entail shall not be separated from the one established by her husband, and that both of them shall be inherited by the same person. She also orders that the remains of her third part shall be entailed with the casal da Freira.

He appointed Nuno Fernandes Lobo to be the first administrator during his lifetime and, after his death, he shall be succeeded by his eldest male son.

Will (extract) by which D. Henrique de Noronha established an entail with all his available assets after the fulfilment of his legacies, indicating that he would appoint an heir later. He declared that that entail could never be annexed to the one established by his father, determining that it would always be transmitted to the second born son of its administrator. His successors were obligated to support the celebration of a daily perpetual mass in the convent of S. Francisco of Alenquer, another one in the church of Misericórdia of Lisboa and another in the church where the institutor's body would be buried. He asked the executors of his will, D. Marcos de Noronha, his brother, Jerónimo de Melo, his brother-in-law, and Luís de Miranda Henriques to buy a chapel on his behalf, preferably in a convent of capuchin friars or of discalced carmelites. He also demanded the elaboration of a tombo of the entailed properties.

Will (extract) by which Álvaro Antunes do Varejão entails the third part of his assets to the entail previously established by his late wife, Inês de Abreu, appointing his son, Francisco Álvares, to be its first administrator. The administrator was due to order the celebration of masses in the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça, in Lisboa, where his parents' bodies would be buried. This entail is composed of a farm, an olive grove and lands in Lisboa.
The testator also orders his son to buy a rent (foro) with the annual worth of 1000 réis, which should support the celebration of masses each year in the church of S. Nicolau of that city and guarantee the maintenance of the grave where are deposited his grandparents' remains, Francisco Alves and Isabel Antunes, located in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição of that church.

Will (extract) by which Beatriz da Cunha entails the third part of her assets to a chapel in the church of the monastery of S. Francisco of Lisboa, with the obligation of 33 masses. She appoints her husband, Simão Monteiro, as administrator of this chapel during his lifetime. After his death, this chapel will be entailed to the one in Beja established by Lourenço Vaz Testa, with the same obligation of 33 masses in S. Francisco of Lisboa, and a tombo will be made and added to the one in Beja. Afterwards, the entail will be bequeathed to the closest relative of her lineage, which, at the time, was João Serrão da Cunha, son of Ana de Bendanha.

Will (extract) by which Pedro Manhos and Isabel Pedrosa declare that the entail established by him should be associated to a pious obligation to be fulfiled, each year, in the church where the institutor's body would be buried. His bones must be firstly deposited in a church in Lisboa and, after some time, transferred to the church of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires of Sacavém. After the death of both of them, the entail should be inherited by Lourenço Marques, their nephew, and the properties incorporating it and another unidentified entail should be listed in a tombo.

Francisco. The institutor appointed her brother, Gonçalo Pinto de Mesquita, as her universal heir, executor and successor in the entail's administration.

In this will, António institutes this chapel, annexing more estates and adding the obligation of two more masses, to be celebrated in the chapel of Chagas, in Santiago da Cividade, and in the altar of S. Pedro in Braga's cathedral. The administrator of this entail should be the same of the chapel of Chagas, instituted by Pedro da Grã.

He establishes an obligation of ten annual masses in that convent, for his and his parents and grandparents' souls, and an entail with his herdade [in Alvalade]. He bequeaths it to his son, Pedro Lopes, who went to India. If his son dies before him, or without descendance, it shall be inherited by his nephew, Bartolomeu Vaz de Lemos or, if he also dies before him, by his other nephew, Francisco de Lemos.

Will (extract) in which João Álvares and Catarina Freire entail the third part of their assets, consisting of properties they have on the outskirts of Sintra: a property (casal), lands in Cortegaça, houses with orange groves, and an orchad in Várzea. When one of them dies, the other will have the entail with the obligation of fulfilling a set of pious charges. After their death, the entail should be administrated by João Freire, Catarina’s brother, and then passed to his eldest son. The pious charges should be accomplished in the church of Colares, where the testators had their burial place and in the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo de Lisboa, where Simão Freire, João Freire’s brother, had his. The testators order the inventory of the entail’s properties in a tombo, with a copy staying with the entail’s administrator and the other with the Confraria do Santíssimo Sacramento. They add that the masses in the church of Colares should be said by a son of Catarina’s uncle Manuel Brás if he becomes a clergyman.

Will (extract) in which Antónia Falcão orders a chapel to be built in the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo de Lisboa and expresses her wish to be buried next to her late husband, Garcia Homem. She bequeaths a set of properties to her chapel, which are listed and described, and appoints her nephew Martim Cota Falcão and the priests of the convent as administrators. Martim Cota, who is the eldest son of the testators’ brother, Gaspar Cota Falcão, would have part of the listed properties, subjected to a series of detailed conditions. He was required to fulfil pious obligations for the institutor’s soul and to pay an annual sum of 10 000 réis to the convent. The priests would receive properties near Beirolas and in Salvaterra, as well as the amount paid by Martim Cota and his descendants. These assets were to be entailed and the conditions and alternatives of their transmission are specified.

She designated António da Silva de Noronha, her husband's son, to be its first administrator. He was also obligated to intern into a convent a girl that lived in her company, in order to became a nun. This entail is composed of houses, lands, "casais", vineyards and olive groves located in Oeiras, Lisboa and Póvoa de Santo Adrião. Followed by an undated inventory.

She appoints Álvaro Nunes, Escudeiro, escrivão da Casa do Cível, to be its first administrator, obligating him and his descendants to support the celebration of a daily mass for her soul in that church. Will (extract) made in Santiago, Cabo Verde, by Leonor da Costa in which she ordered the foundation of a chapel with a perpetual pious obligation of one mass celebrated in every week as long as the world lasted and also three masses in All Saints Day, two of them sung with bread and wine offer, for her soul and for the ones of her husband Pedro Fidalgo de Andrade and their daughter Catarina de Andrade. The masses should be celebrated by the Cabido of Praia. For this, the administrator should receive a salary worth 10.000 réis in every year. To administrate it, she named her granddaughter Madalena de Andrade, daughter of Tomé Fidalgo, during her lifetime and, after her death, the succession should always continue on the eldest heir, male or female. If Madalena died without children, the administration would be handled with the same conditions, in this order, to her sister Isabel, her brother Pedro or to the daughter of André Bruto do Lago. The institutor disposed that farms she entailed should be always benefited with the plantation of new trees. The will should also be registrated in the record keeping books of the chapels, probably the one which served on the Cabido, for her memory.

They appoint José Ferreira Souto, Custódio Ferreira and Gonçalo Ferreira Souto, executors and first administrators. After the death of the latter, the administration would pass to the Padre Provincial of the Companhia de Jesus.
They had also ordered the construction of a chapel in the place of Souto, in the parish of São Salvador de Telões, on the outskirts of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, invoking São Domingos. They appoint Domingos Gonçalves Souto, their nephew, first administrator and entail assets to fulfill the charges.
They ordered another chapel, in the hermitage of Santa Cristina, in the parish of São Pedro da Aguieira, on the outskirts of Torres Vedras, entailing assets to fulfill the charges. They appoint Inácio Ferreira, their nephew, first administrator.

The entail shall pass to the firstborn sons, but if any descendant is a cleric, he will have priority in the administration. The administrator could also appoint the successor, in which case that clause would be respected.
It also has an approval deed (dated 1586-05-07).

As Simão is a minor, he shall live in the house of one of his executors, be educated by them and be married to a noble woman. If Simão doesn't have heirs, or dies, the administration of his properties shall be given to Diogo Rodrigues de Lisboa one of the executors, if he is still alive, but only during his lifetime. After Diogo's death, two thirds of those properties shall be given to Guiomar de Miranda, sister of the institutor, or to her descendants, and another third shall be given to one of Manuel's nieces, daughter of Catarina de Miranda, another of his sisters who is already deceased. If Gaspar Vaz could not administer it, he should pass it to the grandchildren of the institutor, sons of Vicente Botelho. If there were no heirs, he stayed for Nossa Senhora de Alva.

Will chart of Lourenço Coelho Leitão and D. Ana Cardoso de Távora, his wife. They ordered their grave in their chapel, invoking the Santissímo Sacramento, in the Cathedral of Viseu. The administrators of the chapel would be obliged to ensure that burial, or transfer of their bodies, should they die elsewhere, under penalty of losing the administration. They had built the chapel and endowed it with ornaments and vestments, after signing a contract with D. Frei João de Portugal, bishop of Viseu, later updated between the founders and the Chapter. The chapel was to have four chaplains, two appointed by each administrator. They entail various assets to fulfill the charges. For administrators, on behalf of Lourenço Coelho Leitão, they nominate João Gomes Leitão, his nephew, and on the part of Ana Cardoso de Távora, Manuel Homem Cardoso, his nephew. Together, they also nominate the provider of Misericórdia of Viseu.
João Gomes Leitão was to be succeeded by the founder's closest male relative, who lived in the city of Viseu, with his priority descendants. Manuel Homem Cardoso was to be succeeded by a male descendant. If he didn't have them, the administration would pass to Constantino Moreira, his brother.
Lourenço Coelho Leitão also administered an entail, instituted by his father, who had entailed Cotão's farm, among other properties, appointing, according to the institution, João Gomes Leitão, his nephew, to administer it. He attaches assets to this entail, also for the institution's fulfillment.
Doutor Bonifácio Martins Homem, father of Ana Cardoso de Távora, had left, in his will, an entail with a third of his assets, which his daughter had to administer, with the obligation to also entailed the third part of her assets. However, having spent the whole third of his possessions in the fulfillment of legates, the entail could not be established. She, however, entails assets of her third, for the institution of this entail. She appoints Manuel Homem Cardoso, son of Dionísio Homem Cardoso, her cousin, to administer it.

Will chart by which Cristóvão Bocolli, cidadão cremonês, established an entail with a farmstead in Lisboa ("quinta da Palma"), houses on that city and 18 african civets ("gatos de algália"), which were kept in a wooden house in the farm and generated an annual profit of 100 000 réis. He designated his illegitimate son, João Bocle/ João Boche, husband of Maria Luís, to administrate it, obligating him to support the celebration of a daily perpetual mass in the church of Nossa Senhora do Loreto. The institutor ordered the making of 4 tombos containing copies of the entail's institution and other deeds, 3 of which would be delivered to the Hospital de Todos-os-Santos, the referred church and the Juízo dos Resíduos. The testator declared that he had made a will with his late wife, Graça Teixeira, in which they had demanded the celebration of a perpetual daily mass for their souls in Nossa Senhora do Loreto, where he had erected a chapel. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1560-10-28 and an opening deed issued on 1561-03-13.

He appoints Manuel de Sousa de Alvim, his son, executor and first administrator, to be succeded by his eldest male son. In case of extinction of the lineage, the administration would pass to the monastery of São Martinho de Tibães.

The charges were to be celebrated in the church of Seiça. The same clauses had to be fulfilled for the institution of the entail of the Quinta de Pedrógão.

Will chart by which Aldonça de Mendonça, Lourenço de Castro's wife, establishes an entail with the third part of her assets, including properties in Torres Vedras ("azenha") and Lourinhã, whose revenues would be used to support the pious obligation of 10 masses celebrated, each year, in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. She appoints her daughter, Maria, as the entail's first administrator. If the latter died before her father, Lourenço de Castro, he would inherit it. Aldonça chooses to be buried in the church of the convent of S. Francisco de Xabregas, inside the chapel of her grandparents and her father, João Pestana Pereira. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1609-04-10; an opening deed issued on 1612-05-24; and a declaration deed through which the testatrix expresses her wish of being buried in the convent of Santíssima Trindade instead, issued on 1612-05-21.

Will chart by which Bartolomeu Perestrelo, João Lopes Perestrelo's son, established an entail with all his assets, including properties in Ermegeira, Monte Redondo and Lobagueira, in the outskirts of Torres Vedras. He designated his brother, António Perestrelo, to administrate it, ordering him and his successors to support the celebration of a perpetual daily mass for his soul in the chapel of Trindade of the church of S. Pedro de Torres Vedras, where his parents lied. The entail had to be transmitted to his eldest son, who would have to use the family name. He also appointed his brother to become the tutor of his son, Rodrigo, who he had brought from Sofala. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1514-03-15.
