Chapel foundation deed

Chapel foundation deed by Luís Álvares de Madureira, acting as the executor of Senhorinha Dias' testament, and fulfilling her will. Senhorinha had previously been named as the heir of her late husband, Rui Gomes de Azevedo. Senhorinha wished to establish a chapel in the convent of S. Domingos do Porto, where her husband was buried, and where perpetual masses would be celebrated for the benefit of the couple's souls. The first administrator would be a nephew of Senhorinha's late husband. Rui Gomes de Azevedo, who is not named in the document. Until he came of age, Bartolomeu Lopes, squire and "criado" to the Bishop of Porto, would administer the entail. After that, the succession would go to the first-born sons, excluding clerics.

Chapel foundation deed

Chapel foundation deed by which Catarina Lourenço and her children Manuel Vaz, Mestre Felipe, Belchior Vaz, Gabriel Vaz, Beatriz Vaz and Sonorosa Vaz ordered the foundation of a chapel with a perpetual pious obligation of masses celebrated every year in the church of Santa Maria do Bispo, in Montemor-o-Novo. Catarina Lourenço will be the first administrator during her lifetime and, after her death, she shall be succeeded by Manuel Vaz. After his death, the next brother will succeed him, and so on, from the oldest to the youngest. The last of the brothers was appoint the successor in the administration.

Chapel foundation deed by which Estêvão Ferreira da Gama, fidalgo da Casa do Rei, and D. Mécia Pereira, his wife, entail their properties in Lisboa, Sintra, Cascais, Torres Vedras, Lourinhã, Atouguia and Óbidos. They establish an obligation of a daily mass in the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Egito of the convent of S. Francisco de Xabregas, Lisboa. They appoint their daughter, Violante Pereira, as administrator, and her successors afterwards.

Chapel foundation deed by Álvaro do Porto de Pedroso, escudeiro fidalgo, and his wife Margarida Eanes. The document justifies the need to create entails as a way of avoiding partitions, favouring an heir who would preserve the memory of the founders and help his relatives. They decided to reserve their "terças", in which they incorporated the Barrosa manor, in the parish of Lanheses. They appointed their son Lourenço de Pedroso as the first administrator. The entail had the obligation of a weekly mass every Friday in the chapel of the mother church of Ponte de Lima, which had been built by Gonçalo do Porto, and of which the institutor was the administrator. They also imposed masses to be celebrated in the chapel of the Barrosa estate. Several obligations were imposed on the administrators: they had to acquire and entail lands in the vicinity of the Barrosa estate, and they had to use the surname of the founders, emphasising that this was the main reason for the foundation of the chapel, in memory of the people from whom they had received the estates.

Chapel foundation deed in the monastery of São Domingos do Porto by D. Afonso, duque de Bragança, fullfiling the wills of Fernando Eanes and Maria Afonso. The couple had previously established a chapel, but against the laws of the kingdom. The count had granted the king's authorization to fulfill the couple's will for the purpose of caring for the good of their souls. The first appointed administrator was Aires Gonçalves Taborda.

Chapel foundation deed by which Francisco de Gouveia and Bertolesa da Veiga, his wife, established the chapel of Chagas, in the church of Nossa Senhora de Fonte Arcada. They entail assets to the chapel, taken of third part of they assets, to fulfill the charges. They appoint António de Gouveia, their eldest son, administrator. In case of extinction of the lineage, the municipality of Fonte Arcada should elect an administrator.

Codicil of Catarina Rodrigues Pimenta, widow of João Fernandes, ordering the fulfillment of the previous will done together with her husband. She established a chapel, at the hermitage of Santo António, near Moura, entailing the real estate he owned with that hermitage to fulfill the charges. She appoints António Rodrigues, her husband's nephew, as the first administrator. She orders that, after his death, the administration be transferred to the same administrator of the principal chapel, and then remain in the same administrator.
She appoints Álvaro, nephew of João Fernandes, son of Lourenço de Pina, his co-brother cousin, and Inês Fernandes, as administrator of the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. However, he could only receive it after completing 25 years, until then, being administration by Cristóvão de Almeida, nephew of the institutor. If the first died before reaching that age, or without children who could inherit it, he would be left to Cristóvão de Almeida and if he died without legitimate children, to António de Pina, son of Rui de Pina, also only after turning 25 years old.
It also contains an approval deed (dated 1516-08-09), and an opening deed of a will (dated 1518-03-07).

Declaration deed by which Diogo Fernandes de Almeida, Teresa Nogueira's widower, Rico-homem and membro do Conselho Régio, fulfils his late wife's will by entailing vineyards in the ourtskirts of Alenquer, Castanheira do Ribatejo and Azambuja to the chapel she established. He appoints his son, Álvaro de Almeida, Cavaleiro da Casa do Rei, to be the entail's next administrator.

Entail foundation deed by which Afonso Domingues de Beja, Cavaleiro do Conselho do Rei D. Fernando, and Maria Domingues, his wife, established an entail with houses in Lisboa, a farmstead in Montachique ("quinta de Vale Namorado"), lands in Bucelas, Romeira and Sintra. They designated their son, Pedro Afonso, to become its first administrator, obligating him and his successors to sustain a chaplain in the church of S. Bartolomeu of Lisboa, who would be responsible for celebrating perpetual masses for their souls, and to provide for a poor person, giving him/her food and clothes every year. Pedro Afonso had to be succeeded by his brother, João Afonso, or, if he died before him, by his eldest son. The institutors declared their intention to found another entail with properties in Alentejo, who would be administrated by the heirs of Maria Domingues.

Entail foundation deed by which Lourenço Esteves and Constança Afonso, his wife, establish a hospital in Lagos. Contains the list of linked properties. They name what survives of them as the first administrator. The administrator had to be of the lineage of the founders and the county's officials were charged with overseeing their administration or, if they did not accept it, the confrades of the brotherhood of Santa Maria.

Entail foundation deed of the chapel of Pedro Vaz Guedes de Tabuado, by which the founder seeks to clarify the content of his will. He established a chapel in the church of São Miguel, in Santa Comba, where his parents, he and his descendants were to be buried. He entails his farmstead in Santa Comba and appoints Gonçalo Vaz Guedes, his son, as administrator of his entail. It was up to the administrator to name the successor, from among his children. In case of extinction of the lineage, the administration would be left to the abbot of the church of São Miguel.

Will by which Vicente Domingues do Freixo wanted to be buried in the church of Santa Maria de Serpa. He established a chapel, incorporating different properties to fulfill the pious charges in that church. He designated his son D. Rodrigo to be its first administrator. In his minority, the chapel should be administered by his brother Gonçalo Domingues. In case of a bad administration, the chapel would be transferred to his nephew Gonçalo Cerejo and his descendants.

Will made by Francisco Álvares, cavaleiro da Ordem de Avis, in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail composed of several properties in Nisa, with a perpetual pious obligation of two trinitarians of masses celebrated every year and one mass celebrated in every feast of the Virgin Mary, as long as the world lasted. All these masses should be celebrated over his grave on the mother church of Nisa with the prayers inclina Domine and Deus que nos patrem et matrem et Filius Deus said in every mass, accompanied by organ music. To administrate it he named his brother Domingos Álvares, with the condition that he would appoint one of his children to succeed him with the same conditions. The administrators should arrange two separate books, one for the record of this will and of all entailed properties and the other for the record of the pious legacies, that would be subjected to regular account by the Ouvidor do Mestrado de Avis or the Provedor das Capelas or the local magistrates of Nisa.

Catarina de Brito, widow of doutor Rui Gago, revokes her part of the will chart she had previously issued with her husband, and establishes an entail with properties Lisboa, Évora, Alcáçovas and Elvas. She bequeaths it to her niece, D. Catarina, with the obligation of a daily mass in the chapel of Santíssimo Sacramento of the cathedral of Lisboa, where she wishes to be buried. She also establishes two other entails, with "foros" in Elvas, which she bequeaths to her nephews: Fernando Lobo de Brito and Afonso de Brito. Fernando Lobo de Brito shall have 2 000 reis of foros, with the obligation of a mass every Friday and one annual mass in March.

Will by which Rui de Castanheda, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, establishes a chapel in the church of S. Cristóvão of Lisboa, incorporating in it a house, a backyard and vineyards in Aldeia Galega. He appoints Isabel de Proença, mother of his two daughters, Beatriz de Castanheda and Isabel de Castanheda, to be its first administrator, obligating her to celebrate annual masses for his soul in that chapel, where the institutor's body should be buried. After her death, the entail must be inherited by Beatriz de Castanheda and passed to her eldest son.

Will by which Isabel da Cunha, wife of Fernando da Fonseca, fidalgo da Casa do Rei, entails her third part, consisting of a farmstead in Alvalade and houses in Lisboa. She bequeaths it to her daughter, Joana de Paiva, with an obligation of a weekly mass in the convent of S. Francisco de Xabregas, where she wishes to be buried. If her daughter dies without heirs, the entail shall pass to Isabel da Cunha's son, Duarte da Fonseca.

Will by which Constança Esteves wanted to be buried in the chapel that she and her husband ordered to build in the church of Santa Maria de Estremoz. She incorporated several assets to fulfill the charges and designated her husband Afonso Pires to be its first administrator. Her husband should nominate the administrator in his last will. If he did not nominate a successor or he was not suitable to administer it, the municipality should nominate the administrator.

Will of mestre João das Leis, Lourenço Pires' son, founding an entail with his available portion composed of his properties and appointing as its administrator his second male son and, after him, his firstborn and legitimate male son, imposing the pious obligation of some masses in the church of S. Lourenço of Lisboa. The testator also appoints Gomes, his son, as the successor of Afonso Pires in the administration of the chapel of Santa Catarina, in the church of S. Lourenço of Lisboa, founded by Constança Eanes Palhavã. Besides, João das Leis orders the payment of some bequests and debts to the chapels of mestre Pedro and D. Afonso Dinis, bishop, to buy properties, and appoints as attorney-in-fact (procurador) of the latter chapel the same attorney-in-fact of the chapel of mestre Pedro, administrating its books and assets.

Will by which Agostinho Cabral and Maria de Salas, his wife, established a chapel in the church of Espírito Santo of Castelo de Vide, determining that its future administrators had to support the celebration of 5 weekly masses in perpetuity for their souls. The institutors entailed to it all their properties and determined that, after their deaths, the chapel would be administrated by Antónia Cabral, Agostinho's niece.
They declared that their bodies had to be buried in the chapel they had built in the church of Nossa Senhora da Devesa of that village.

Will of João Fernandes and Catarina Rodrigues Pimenta, his wife, naming heir and executor whatever survived of them. They want to be buried in their chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo of Moura. They establish a chapel, entailing all their untested assets, to fulfill the charges. They nominate the one who survived as the first administrator, and it was up to him or her to nominate the successor, and so on. If one of the administrators did not appoint a successor, the chapel would pass to the judges and clerk of the municipality of Moura.
The will allows for the survivor of the couple to establish another chapel, in the hermitage of Santo António, with the assets located there. If not, they would revert to the main chapel.
It is inserted in an exemplification (dated 1622-06-13), with an approval deed (dated 1504-12-26).

The executors were responsible for appointing two relatives (one on the mother's side, the other on the father's side) to, after their deaths, administer the assets.

Will of Fernando Eanes Anão, ordering his grave in the church of Santa Maria de Aljezur. He leaves his dwelling houses, several agricultural properties and his clothes to the hospital in Aljezur, which he instituted, with the charge of two masses. He names Pedro Vaz, his brother-in-law, as executor, and orders him to name the next institutor, and so on. The municipality officers should inspect the administration.

Will of João Gomes da Silva, instituting a chapel in the hermitage of São Marcos, entailing all its assets located in Tentúgal and on the outskirts, to fulfill the charges. He appoint Aires Gomes da Silva, his son, as the first administrator, and then by his legitimate grandson. If the descendants were missing, the municipality of Tentúgal should choose the administrator.

Will of Beatriz de Meneses, countess of Marialva and Loulé. Beatriz states that she and her late husband had a great devotion to the Order of St. Francis. For that reason, they determined to found a monastery dedicated to S. António, in their farmestead of S. António de Ferreirim, in which they would both be buried. The Countess declared that all her descendants and heirs had died and that she therefore had full power over her inheritance. She decided to declare the Infante D. Luís as her universal heir. At the same time, the testator decided to reserve rural properties and to incorporate them into a chapel to be instituted in the convent of S. António de Ferreirim. The first administrator of the chapel would be Francisco Gouveia, "criado" of her late husband. Succession would always occur by joint appointment of the judge of Lamego and the dean of the cathedral. If the last possessor of the entail had a male child, he could succeed, but this always depended on the will of the judge and the dean. According to Beatriz's wishes, the administrator could not be a "fidalgo", a rich or powerful person.

Will chart by which Doutor Pedro Nunes de Soutomaior bequeaths all his assets to João Lourenço, his relative, obligating him and his successors to maintain two chaplains, who should celebrate annual masses for his soul and the souls of his parents in the church of Santa Maria of Oeiras and in the church of São Martinho of Sintra. He declares that, two years after his death, his remains should be transported to the church of São Martinho, where his grandfather's bones were deposited.

He designated his brother Lourenço Afonso to be the first administrator of this entail. It should succeed his nephew Bartolomeu Afonso and, after his death, Amaro Fernandes. After the death of the last one, it should succeed the closest relative of the institutor, with the priority to choose the ecclesiastical ones.

Will (extract) by which Diogo de Castro do Rio orders a daily mass for his soul and a yearly divine office in his chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa. He entails to it his houses in Fangas da Farinha, which had belonged to his sister, Justa Vaz, to be administered by his heir and by the confraria de Nossa Senhora da Conceição of that convent. He also orders that a candle should always be lit in the chapel. If the confraria is extinguished, the obligation shall be passed to the Hospital de Todos os Santos, and if the Hospital is extinguished, it shall be passed to the Câmara of Lisboa. He establishes that this chapel shall be the burial place of his descendants.
Followed by notes from 1859, referring two subrogation sentences from 1855 e 1857 related to Quinta do Rio, in Sacavém, part of the entail established by Diogo de Castro do Rio.
