Will by which Doutor Estêvão Leitão, Desembargador dos agravos da Casa da Suplicação, establishes an entail with the third part of his assets, including houses he had in Lisboa, instituting the pious obligation of celebrating annual masses in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. He appoints his wife, Francisca de Avelar, as his heir and tutor of their infant son. She was also obligated to support the celebration of annual masses in the convent of Santo António do Varatojo, in Torres Vedras, as long as she lived. After Francisca's death, the entail would be inherited by their son. He chooses to be buried in the church of the referred convent. Followed by an approval deed, issued on 1562-06-08, and an opening deed issued on 1562-06-29.

Will made by Bartolomeu Borges and his wife Isabel de Póvoas in which they ordered the foundation of an entail with a perpetual pious obligation of alms for the Confraria do Santíssimo Sacramento of Vila Franca do Campo. They appointed António Borges to be the first administrator during his lifetime and, after his death, he shall be succeeded by his eldest male son.
They ordered the foundation of another entail with a perpetual pious obligation of a mass celebrated every week in the church of Misericórdia of Vila Franca do Campo. They appointed Gaspar de Magalhães to be the first administrator during his lifetime and, after his death, he shall be succeeded by his eldest male son.

Will by which D. Beatriz de Sá Pereira, D. Garcia de Castro's wife, declared that the entail established by her grandmother, D. Beatriz de Melo, which she administered, should be passed to João de Almada, her cousin, since she had no descendants. It is mentioned that the entail was composed of lands (herdades) in Viana do Alvito and that its administrators were obligated to fulfil pious obligations in the church of the convent of S. Francisco of Évora.
The testator states that she administrated a chapel in the church of Nossa Senhora do Loreto, which had been transmitted to her by her father. A farm (fazenda) in Ilha de S. Tomé and a farmstead (quinta) in Catujal were entailed to it and its administrators were obligated to support the celebration of a perpetual daily mass and to adorn the chapel. Whoever succeeded her in its administration would receive a list of the ornaments.
Furthermore, D. Beatriz de Sá Pereira instructed the executors of her will to buy a public debt instrument, whose revenues would be used to celebrate annual masses for her soul in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. She demanded that her remains should be buried inside the chapter house of that convent. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1609-11-17 and an opening deed issued on 1609-11-20.

Will made by Constança Rodrigues Ferreira in which she ordered the foundation of a chapel with a perpetual pious obligation of masses celebrated every year in the monastery of São Francisco of Ponta Delgada. She appointed Gonçalo Peixoto to be the first administrator during his lifetime and, after his death, he shall be succeeded by his eldest male son.

His godson Manuel is obligated to became a priest and to celebrate masses in the Ermida do Glorioso Mártir de São Vicente, in the Church of Nossa Senhora da Porta do Céu, Telheiras. This entail is composed of a farm in Telheiras and houses located in Lisboa.

Will by which Maria Eanes, João Gil's wife, bequeaths all her properties to Catarina Eanes, her sister, obligating her and her descendants to support the celebration of annual masses for her soul in the chapel of S. João Batista of the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo of Lisboa, where she would be buried next to the remains of her parents and her late husbands. After her sister's death, the entail would be inherited by Gaspar Vana, the testator's nephew.

Will by which D. Luís de Sousa, arcebispo de Lisboa, capelão-mor do Rei, brother of the marquês de Arronches, expresses his wish to be buried in the cathedral of Lisboa, if he dies in that city. He bequeaths his properties to his brother, who is the successor of the entail which belonged to their parents. He establishes an entail of his own, with his properties, which shall be headed by his quinta da Torre Bela, in the parish of S. Pedro da Arrifana. He entails to it his tapestries, silver and paintings and an image of Christ which had been blessed by the Pope. He appoints as heir of his entail his brother or the successors of the entail of his ancestors.
He mentions that he gave a public debt instrument to the Cabido of the cathedral of Porto, where he had been deão, with an obligation of two annual masses for his soul.
Followed by approval deed, dated 1685-09-13, and opening deed, dated 1702-01-03.

Will by which Catarina de Sá, widow of Duarte Dias de Meneses, required to be buried in the chapel of São Francisco Xavier in the Church of São Pedro de Alenquer, where her mother, brother and nephews were buried. She designated his nephew José de Sousa Pereira, the eldest son of her brother Luís Pereira de Sá and his wife D. Catarina de Sousa e São Paio, to be her heir and the first administrator of this entail. The sucessor was obligated to order the celebration of masses in this chapel, to contract a chaplain and to deliver the masses certificates to the Misericórdia of Alenquer to prove the celebration of these pious obligations. This entail is composed of two farms in the place of "Meca", with its houses, olive press and vineyards, and other immovable goods on the outskirts of Alenquer, Lisboa and Guarda. This entail should be succeeded by the legitimate heirs of his nephew, namely the eldest son or, in his absence, the eldest daughter. The assets she inherited from her uncle Luís Álvares da Rocha should be used to buy immovable goods, in order to be incorporated into this entail. Followed by an approval deed dated 1668-06-26 and an opening deed dated 1677-05-01.

Will by which Francisca de Abreu required to be buried in the Monastery of São Bento de Monção, with her father-in-law and son. She left her third to her son Manuel Pereira, with the obligation to order the celebration of masses in the chapel of Santa Catarina. She also declared that the vineyard she possessed should be incorporated into this chapel. This entail should be succeeded by Manuel Pereira's eldest son or, in his absence, the eldest daughter. If her son did not have children, this entail should be succeed by her niece Isabel Soares de Castro or whomever would succeed in this entail. Followed by an approval deed 1603-05-02, an opening deed dated 1603-11-08 and a codicil dated 1603-10-16.

Will by which Manuel Pereira de Castro designated as his universal heirs Pedro Marinho Falcão and his cousin D. Isabel de Castro, wife of Alexandre de Magalhães de Meneses. Half of his assets that should be inherited by his cousin D. Isabel de Castro, should be incorporated into his chapel of Santa Catarina, in the parish of Moreira, following the same conditions of his grandfather Paio Gomes Pereira chapel's foundation. D. Isabel de Castro and her heirs were obligated to order the celebration of 52 masses in this church. The other half of his assets, that should be inherited by Pedro Marinho Falcão, should be used to order the celebration of more 52 masses. He also established that he wanted to give his nun sisters some "tenças". Followed by an approval deed dated 1611-10-22.

Will by which Joana da Mata Parada wanted to be buried in the chapel of São João Batista, in the Church of Sardoal, where her father was buried. She left to her goddaughter Feliciana, daughter of António Mendes Caldeira and his wife Maria de Parada, a vineyard in Vale do Mou, olive groves in the place of São Miguel, São Francisco, "além da Ribeira" and Vale de Lousa, with the obligation to order the celebration of masses in this church. By the death of Feliciana, it should succeed her children or, in their absence, her sister Fulgência and her heirs. She also left to her niece Fulgência some houses in Sardoal, rents and some movable goods. The institutor designated her niece Maria de Parada and her niece's husband António Mendes Caldeira to be her universal heirs. Followed by an approval deed dated 1685-04-06 and an opening deed dated 1685-05-26.

Will by which D. António da Cunha declared that he wanted to be buried in chapel of the Sé, where his father and his wife D. Filipa Henriques were buried. He founded a chapel using his third composed of lands, and designated his eldest son D. Miguel to be its first successor. He was due to order the celebration of daily masses. In the absence of an eldest son, it should succeed a daughter or the closest kin of his father D. Aires da Cunha. Followed by an approval deed dated 1551-12-16.

Will by which Gaspar Serrão declared that he wanted to be buried in the chapel of São José, in Azinhaga, that he ordered to built. He designated his nephew João Serrão, o Grande, to be its first administrator, with the obligation to order the celebration of masses for his, his parents and his siblings' soul. The institutor also founded an entail, composed of some lands and vineyards in Golegã, lands in Pombal, houses and olive groves in Azinhaga, Bacelos and Barreiro, an oil press in Borda d'Água and an "armazém" in Azinhaga. He also incorporated his "padroado" of the chapel of São José into this entail, and obligated his administrator to contract a chaplain, to have the chapel clean and with candles and all the necessary for the celebration of masses. After João Serrão's death, this entail should be succeed by his eldest son or, in his absence, by his daughter. The institutor also left some assets to his niece Violante Serrão but, if she died without heirs, these assets should be inherited by João Serrão and his heirs. Followed by an approval deed dated 1664-09-29.

Will by which Isabel Mendes established this entail using her third and designating her husband Diogo Fernandes de Elvas to be its first administrator if she died first. She wanted to be buried in the Chapel of Santíssimo Sacramento, in the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, where it was placed their family grave. She wanted to follow all the entail conditions already explained in her husband's last will. She nominated her husband Diogo Fernandes de Elvas and her son-in-law Rui de Sousa da Veiga to be her last will executors. Followed by an approval deed dated 1636-05-05.

Will by which João Zuzarte da Fonseca, D. Mariana de Frias' widower, established a chapel in the hermitage of Espírito Santo of Lumiar, where his wife was buried and his body should be deposited, entailing to it the third part of his assets. He designated his son, Doutor Pedro Zuzarte da Fonseca de Moncorvo, to administrate it and obligated him to support the celebration of a daily mass in that place.

Will by which Vasco Fernandes, pedreiro, and Ana Alves, his wife, bequeath houses in Lumiar to Ana do Amaral, Martinho de Matos' wife, determining that her and her heirs must support the celebration of 2 annual masses, for their souls, in the church of S. João Batista of Lumiar. Those houses could never be sold or exchanged for others. Its future owners are obligated to keep them clean, covered with lime, furnished with a mattress, a bed and a blanket to give shelter to any franciscan friars passing in the area.
The testators leave a land in Telheiras, an olive grove in Ameixoeira, a black slave and their remaining movable assets to Francisco Alves or to his wife, Isabel Fernandes, with the obligation of celebrating 3 annual masses for their souls, each year, in S. João of Lumiar.
They declare that their bodies should be buried in that church.

Will by which Ana Carneiro, daughter of Francisco de Figueiroa and his wife Inês Carneiro, declared that she wanted to be buried in the Convent of São Francisco, where her parents were buried. She declared that her mother founded an entail using some "casais" located in the parish of Santa Ovaia, in Oliveira do Hospital, with the obligation to celebrate masses in the Convent of São Francisco. Her father also founded an entail in the same convent, with the obligation to order the celebration masses using the rents of the "casal da Pedreira", in the parish of Santa Olaia de Veiris. She designated her nephew João de Valadares and his wife Antónia Carneiro to succeed in her mother and father's entail. She also declared that she wanted to order the celebration of more masses using some houses in Porto, and asked her nephew to give some wax to the convent. Followed by an approval deed dated 1592-09-17 and a codicil dated 1595-01-11.

Will by which Nuno Martins da Silveira declared that he wanted to be buried in the Church of Góis, where his deceased wife Filipa de Vilhena was buried. He ordered to build a chapel, asking his son Luís da Silveira to use the rents he would inherit by his death and to order the celebration of masses in this church. The institutor wanted to incorporate into this entail his farm of Currelos and some houses in Lisboa. He also declared that some assets in Olivença and Ilha das Flores, that belonged to his wife's third, should be inherit by his son Luís da Silveira. The institutor was also obligated to incorporate the fourth part of his third into the "Morgado de Évora", founded by his grandfather Nuno Martins da Silveira.

Will by which D. Graça Guedes, Gonçalo Mendes de Brito's widow, ordered the construction of a hermitage devoted to Nossa Senhora do Vencimento in her farmstead of Carriche, determining that her heir had to give 30 000 réis, each year, to a priest to celebrate daily perpetual masses for her soul inside it. While the chapel was being built, the masses would be celebrated in the church of Nossa Senhora da Divina Providência of Lisboa, to which 5 pitchers of olive oil should be given, each year, to illuminate her statue of Nossa Senhora do Vencimento. She demanded that a grave should be bought in that church to receive her remains and it had to be next to that statue. 2 perpetual daily masses had to be celebrated, each year, in the church by priests chosen by the executors of her will. The pious obligations had to be supported by the revenues of a public debt instrument. The testator left her farmstead and money to maintain her chapel to her niece, D. Mariana Guedes, obligating her to give 3 dowries to orphan girls or young widows every year. If her niece did not marry according to her parents' will, she would not be entitled to receive her aunt's inheritance. If Mariana died without leaving descendants, all the estate would be transmitted to Bartolomeu Queirós Guedes, the testator's nephew.
D. Graça Guedes bequeathed jewelry, ornaments and textiles destined to clothe statues of saints to many churches of Lisboa, such as the church of S. Domingos, the church of Nossa Senhora da Madre de Deus, the church of Nossa Senhora do Socorro, the church of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França or the church of Nossa Senhora dos Olivais.

If all of them died before marrying, all the properties would be transmitted to their mother. She bequeathed 2 houses in that street to Garcia Soares, her nephew; other houses to her niece, D. Maria; other houses to her nephew, Fernando Soares; a house in that street and an annual quantity of sugar ("100 arrobas") extracted from her sugarcane plantation in Ilha de S. Tomé to her cousin, Isabel Furtado; other houses to Gaspar Sineiros, her cousin; other houses to Leonor Álvares, her cousin, Licenciado Diogo Pinto's wife, and other houses to Elvira Rodrigues, Diogo Fernandes's wife.

Will by which D. Martinho de Castelo Branco Valente, Senhor de Vila Nova de Portimão, ordered the renovation of his chapel in the church of S. Martinho of Lisboa, where his heir would guarantee that a perpetual daily mass for his soul would be celebrated. If the testator did not leave an heir, his brother, D. Diogo, would inherit his patrimony, administrate his noble house and would be responsible for the appointment of a chaplain.

Will made by Maria Rodovalho in which she ordered, among several other dispositions, the foundation of two entails. The first entail should have a perpetual obligation of one mass celebrated every year, in the day of N. Sra da Assunção, on her mother's grave in the monastery of S. Francisco, where her body should be buried. To administrate this entail she ordered the executor of her will to appoint a female relative that should also appoint a female successor after her death, so that the entail was always administrated by woman. The second entail had a perpetual obligation of one mass celebrated every week and she appointed her son Francisco Correia to administrate it during his life, and after his death the succession should continue on the eldest male heir, preferably.

Will made by Gonçalo Gonçalves Peixoto, abade de Telões e de Vila Nova, in which he ordered the foundation of a chapel with a perpetual pious obligation of masses celebrated every year in the monastery of Pombeiro. He appointed Gomes Gonçalves Peixoto to be the first administrator during his lifetime.
He also founded a shelter in his houses, located in Vale de Donas, for twelve poor people.

Will made by Eugénia Damas in which she ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail and chapel with a perpetual mass obligation of half anal of masses, that being 26 masses, celebrated every year on her chapel of N. Sra. da Conceição, in the church of Santiago of Marvão. She named her goddaughter Maria Gonçalves Delgada as first administrator of the entail and her eldest heirs after her. If she died without children, then the administration should be handled to one of the children or grandchildren of her uncle João Dama, who departed to Brazil and lived there. If João Dama had no children or grandchildren, then the Confraria do Santíssimo Sacramento should inherit the entail.

Will made by Tomé Afonso in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual mass obligation of a chapel of weekly masses celebrated in the church of N. Sra. do Rosário, in Vila Franca do Campo, where his body should be buried. He named his uncle Pedro Afonso as first administrator and his cousin Jácome Gado after his death, and from there on the succession should always continue on the eldest male heir, and if he had none, the administration should be transmitted to Paulo Gago, also a cousin of the institutor.

Will by which Pedro Esteves de Unhão and his wife, Clara Afonso, establish a chapel dedicated to Santo Eustáquio in the cathedral of Lisboa, with a chaplain who shall pray for their souls. They also found a hospital of the same invocation in their houses, which shall feed and dress three poor people. They entail to these institutions their quinta da Panasqueira, casais of Caparide, Negranças, Mastronças, Arranhol, Carrasqueira, Monte Serves, and Santa Eulália, salterns in Tojal and houses in Lisboa. After their deaths, the administration of their chapel and hospital shall be bequeathed to João Eanes and Afonso Domingos and to their children.

He named his daughter Ana de Castelo Branco as first administrator of the entail, with the condition that she would make a tombo record book. After her death the entail would be administrated, preferably, by the eldest male heir.

He designated his son, António Rodrigues Pacheco, to administrate it, obligating him and his descendants to support the celebration of 2 perpetual daily masses in the chapel, devoted to Nossa Senhora das Angústias, founded by the institutor in the monastery of S. Bento of Lisboa. As long as Frei Jacinto Pacheco was alive, he would be responsible for celebrating them. Each year, the administrators had to give 75 000 réis to the monastery to provide for the maintenance of the chapel and to pay for the masses. The institutor had already ordered the painting of an altarpiece.

Domingos of Lisboa. She declares that her body should be buried in that church, inside the grave where lies her father, Afonso Colaço. Followed by a detailed list of assets incorporated in the entail.

Domingos of Lisboa, in the grave where lies her husband, Domingos Lopes Barreto, and confirms the donation made to João Nunes Pais. Will by which António Gomes da Mata established an entail, appointing his nephew Luis Gomes da Mata to be its first administrator. He was due to order the celebration of masses and to light a candle in the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça and other churches In Lisboa. The founder also appointed his nephew Duarte Gomes da Mata heir of the alodial assets and some of the entailed assets until his death. This chapel has the right to nominate a priest to celebrate the masses. This entail is composed of several assets belonging to the entails of Luís Gomes da Mata's, Pedro António da Mata and Duarte Reimão da Mata; jewelry, silver pieces and a public debt instrument of 70 000 réis in Câmara de Lisboa.

He designates Maria Leite, daughter of his nephew André de Loureiro, and his legitimized son, Sebastião, who was to marry her, as his universal heirs and first administrators of his entail. Will by which Diogo Cirne, Provedor da Fazenda em Pernambuco, orders the executor of his will to buy a chapel in a church or convent of his choice. He establishes an entail with lands (casal) in Valores, Loures, properties (casais) in S. João dos Porqueiros, Sintra, houses in Tronco and in Rua dos Douradores, Lisboa, a farmstead (quinta) in Almada and lands (casal) in Alenquer, determining that Francisco Nunes de Ávila, its first administrator, must support the celebration of a daily perpetual mass for his soul in that chapel. The administrator would also be responsible for lighting a lamp every saturday, sunday and holy day of the year in that chapel; for giving, each year, 2 dowries of 60 000 réis to orphan girls and for donating, annually, 20 000 réis to Vitória Pereira, escrava índia, only during her lifetime. After her death, that sum of money would be delivered to the brotherhood of S. Bartolomeu of the church of S. Julião of Lisboa, whose officials would celebrate annual masses for Diogo Cirne's soul.
After Francisco Nunes de Ávila's death, the entail would be inherited by someone previously appointed by him.

Will by which D. Cristóvão de Moura Côrte-Real and his wife, D. Margarida de Côrte-Real, marqueses de Castelo Rodrigo, express their will to be buried in the chapel of the Côrte-Reais, in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa, which belongs to the entail administered by D. Margarida, if, by the time of their deaths, they haven't appointed another place. They establish a daily mass for their souls in that chapel, entailing to it the casal do Garajal, which is already entailed to another perpetual daily mass in the same chapel, and ask that Cristóvão's parents, who are buried in the monastery of Carmo and in the convent of S. Francisco, be transfered to the same chapel. They also establish an obligation of 20 000 masses, 10 000 for each one of them, 200 to be prayed in the convent of Calatrava, 400 in the convent of Alcántara, and the remaining ones in churches of Franciscan orders and others of their executor's choosing.

They then ask the king to confirm the entail they have established, consisting of the third part of their assets, which shall incorporate 40 000 cruzados from the lands of Cabeceiras de Basto, and houses in Lisboa. This entail shall be inherited by their eldest son, and his successors thereafter, together with the entail of the Côrte-Reais. If they have no sucession, however, the entail of the Côrte-Reais shall be separated from the entail of the Mouras, and the Moura entail shall be bequeathed either to D. Francisca de Távora, or to D. Isabel de Moura, D. Cristóvão's sisters, and to their descendants afterwards.

He ordered a vault to be placed over this grave, containing his name and the names of his wife, Maria da Silveira, and father, Francisco Correia de Andrada. To administrate this entail and chapel he named his illegitimate son Francisco Correia de Andrade as first administrator during his lifetime and, after his death, the succession should always continue on the eldest male heir. He disposed that if Francisco had no legitimate children, then the illegitimate could succeed, however, he ordered that no relative of the mother of Francisco could ever succeed on the entail, once he was a bastard.

She named her nephew João Luís as first administrator and before his death, he would appoint an administrator to succeed him with the same conditions. João Luís would be obliged to provide the lamps that would be lit during the masses and would register an extract of this will with its inventory on the Tombo record books of the church of Santa Maria of Monforte.

Will made by Maria Vaz do Crato, in which she ordered the foundation of an entail and chapel with a perpetual obligation of twenty six masses, that being hald anal of masses, celebrated every year on the mother church of Arronches, where her body should be buried. She named her brother Manuel Rodrigues do Crato as first administrator during his lifetime, and after his death the succession should always continue on the eldest heir. During the first six years of Manuel's adminstration, he would be obliged to celebrate barely 10 masses, instead of the ordinary 26. Any relative who wished to became a clergyman could receive the administration to ordain himself, and after his death the succession should continue on the closest relative. All administrators who administrated the chapel for more than ten years would be obliged to apply 4.000 réis to the chapel, and when the summ reached 20.000 réis, then more properties should be bought and three more masses would be added to the perpetual masses obligation.

Will made by Manuel de Andrade and his wife Guiomar de Andrade, in which they ordered the foundation of an entail with a perpetual mass obligation of masses celebrated every year in the days of the Virgin Mary, feasts of Christ and All Soul's Day in the convent of S. António of Crato, where they would be buried, with vault and grave, as accorded in an obligation deed made with the friars of the convent. They named one another as first administrators of the entail, and after both of them were deceased, António de Andrade, brother of the institutor, would inherit the administration. After the death of António, the administration would be handled to his eldest daughter and from there on the succession should always continue on the eldest heir. Any administrator who committed crimes of heresy would be immediatly deprived from the administration.

Will made by padre Manuel Gonçalves, in which he ordered, among several other dispositions, the foundation of an entail and chapel with a perpetual mass obligation of one daily mass celebrated on this chapel, invocation of Jesus Christ, in the mother church of Crato.
He left very detailed instructions for the ornate of the chapel, detailing all silverware, trousseau, garments, and altarpiece. He named his father, Domingos Gonçalves, as first administrator during his lifetime, with the condition he would complete the construction and ornamentation of the chapel. After his death, the administration would be handed to the institutor's sister, Catarina Gonçalves, who would appoint a fine and decent clergyman to celebrate the masses, one that must not be hebrew, moorish or mulatto descendancy, nor descend of, any "drunken man".
After the death of Catarina, the succession would always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. However, if she died without children, the administration would be handled to the same chaplain who celebrated the masses, to be elected by the local vigário and beneficiados in a voting session which would be based on the use of withe and dark beans to elect potential candidates.

Will of Gonçalo Pimenta and his wife Isabel da Costa. Both state that their bodies should be buried in the chapel of São Gonçalo, which the couple had previously built. They decided to found a chapel, entailing estates to that effect. The chapel had the perpetual obligation of celebrating a weekly mass, along with other masses celebrated on certain days of the year. The first administrator of the chapel would be their first-born son, according to the same rules that applied to the chapel founded by Gonçalo Afonso Vieira, Gonçalo's grandfather, known as the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Ponte, in Ponte da Barca. The present will should be registered in the "Registo das capelas dos Resíduos de Braga". The succession was to pass to the first-born sons, excluding illegitimate children and people who had committed lese-majeste crimes.

Will made by Agostinho Fernandes and his wife Inês Fernandes in which they ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of two entails. This first entail would be composed of an estate named Mouta, in the outskirts of Portalegre, over which the institutors imposed a perpetual obligation of 66 masses celebrated every year on the chapel of S. Lourenço, where their bodies should be buried. To administrate it they named one of the sons of Jerónimo Fernandes, that would be chosen by him, with the condition that he would marry with one of the daughters of Belchior Vaz, and from there on the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. The second entail would be composed of an olive grove, over which the institutors imposed a perpetual obligation of twelve masses celebrated every year, and to administrate it they named Pedro, son of João Fernandes, with the condition that he would marry with one of the daughters of Diogo Vaz, at his choice, and, after his death the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. The Provedor das Capelas would be obliged to take account of the administration of both entails every year.

She also ordered that all administrators should give twelve alqueires of oil to the Confraria das Almas, in order to maintain a lamp lit during 52 masses every year.

Will made by André de Sousa Tavares in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with the perpetual obligation of four masses celebrated every week on his chapel in the church of S. Francisco's monastery, in Portalegre. He named his eldest son as first administrator of the entail and after his death the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. If this son had no male heirs, the administration should be handled to the second born son with the same condition, in ways that the male uncle should be preferred on the administration over the female niece. If none of his male or female daughters had children, then the entail should be transmitted to his brother Francisco de Sousa Tavares. All administrators were henceforth obliged to annex half of their own reserved portions to the entail by the time of their deaths. They should also bear the surname "Sousa Tavares" and use the coat of arms of Sousa and Tavares family, or, otherwise lose the administration. He ordered that all administrators should give five alqueires of oil in order to maintain a lamp permanently lit on the chapel of Espírito Santo, in Portalegre. Finally, he also left detailed instructions for the construction of a manor house on the estate of Abrunheira.

She left very detailed instructions for the ornamentation of the chapel and ordered the administrator to make a lamp in silver, which should always be kept lit. She named her nephew Brás Félix de Abreu as first administrator of the entail, and his eldest son Diogo Caldeira after him, and after the death of Diogo, the succession should always continue on the eldest male heir. If Diogo had no children, the administration should be handled to António de Abreu, nephew of the institutor, or her nieces Elvira or Mariquita, in this order. No administrator could ever marry with a person who descended from hebrews, moors or new-christians.

Miguel, in Alegrete, with a perpetual mass obligation of twenty masses celebrated every year on its altar, where her bones should be buried. She named Manuel Martins as first administrator and his son Pedro Soilheiro after him, as long as if he ordained himself a clergyman he would receive the administration, and after his death the closest relative would appoint another clergyman or a an honourable man to succeed him. If there was no close relative, then the parish vicar would appoint him. She ordered the chapel to be ornated with a vault, altarpiece, curtains for lent and feast days, and a lamp that should be lit on the days of the Virgin Mary.

The first entail would be composed of lands, farms vineyards and houses in Marvão's outskirts, and would have a perpetual obligation of fifteen masses celebrated every year, ten on the Altar das Chagas of Castelo de Vide and five on the Altar das Chagas de Cristo on the Misericórdia of Marvão. To administrate it, he named Vitória Garção, daughter of Domingos Dias and Isabel Fernandes, during her lifetime, and, after her death, the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. The second entail would be composed of some lands and a farm, and would also have a perpetual obligation of fifteen masses celebrated every year, ten on the Altar das Chagas of Castelo de Vide and five on the Altar das Chagas de Cristo on the Misericórdia of Marvão, or, alternatively, on the convent of N. Sra. da Estrela. To administrate it he named Isabel Garção, sister o Vitória and daughter of Domingos Dias and Isabel Fernandes, during her lifetime, and, after her death, the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. If neither Vitória or Isabel had children, the administration would be handled to their youngest sister Leonor Carrilho or, if she also had no children, to Maria Mouzinha, cousin of the institutor, or their descendants, with the only restriction that neither of the two entails could ever be administrated by the same administrator of the entail founded by Pedro Mouzinho da Mota. The administrators of both entails should marry with a noble person, chatolic of clean blood, and would lose the administration if he or she ever married with a person of jewish, moorish, or new-christian ascendency. The Provedor da Comarca should take account on the administration of both entails, and charge the administrators in double if they did not fullfill the pious obligations, even in times of war. The administrators were also obliged to purchase a "bula de defunto" for the institutor's soul and should also preserve the entailed houses, reforming them if needed, or, otherwise, they would be obliged to pay 3 cruzados every year to the Bula de Cruzada until the houses were fully restored. The institutor mentioned that he had administrated the chapel founded by Manuel Carrilho, fullfilling all obligations and improving it until 1642-10-01, when the Castillian army invaded and stole some of the chapel's properties, and from there on the chapel was administrated by Fernando da Mota and his wife Maria Mouzinha, who owed some debts to him.

Will of father Miguel Oliveira da Cunha, by which he decided to institute an entail with a chapel under the invocation of S. Miguel Arcanjo. The chapel was to be built and a retable was to be placed in it, with the image of S. Miguel in the centre and S. António and S. Brites on the right and left, in memory of his parents, António Rodrigues de Olvieira and Brites Figueira. The founder appointed his great-nephew, Francisco Pereira Pinto de Oliveira, as administrator. The administrators of the entail were to be male and to be called Miguel Oliveira da Cunha, as the founder, and to use his coat of arms.

If any of the entailed properties was sold or dispersed, the administrator and his successors should immediately lose the administration of the entail, that would be transmitted to the Câmara of Sintra to appoint an old man, with more then 40 years, to administer it. A vault should be placed with the institutor’s names on it.

Will by which Jorge de Albuquerque, do Conselho Ultramarino, cavaleiro professo da Ordem de Cristo, son of Fernando de Albuquerque, governador do Estado da Índia, expresses his wish to be buried in the chapel he and his second wife, D. Ana de Noronha, bought in the antechorus of the church of the monastery of Santíssima Trindade of Lisboa.
He designates his only grandson, D. António da Silveira de Albuquerque, son of his deceased daughter, Beatriz de Albuquerque, and of Jerónimo da Silveira, as his universal heir. He bequeaths him all of his properties in Lisboa, Paio Pires and Torres Vedras as an entail. This entail shall be joined to and have the same clauses of succession as the entail of Afonso Mexia, established in 1550-10-03, which António da Silveira de Albuquerque had inherited from his grandmother, Beatriz Mexia. The administrator shall take a part of his entail's properties to order a daily mass for his soul in the monastery of Santíssima Trindade, rescue captives, marry orphans and establish two mercieiros in his chapel. His wife, D. Ana de Noronha, shall have the usufruct of a third part of the properties of the entail during her lifetime. If his grandson refuses these conditions, or dies without succession, the administration of the entail shall pass to the priests of Santíssima Trindade, who shall appoint a layman as the next administrator.
Jorge Albuquerque appoints his grandson as administrator of the chapel of his grandparents in the mother church of Beja. He also orders that the obligation of masses for the soul of his father, Fernando de Albuquerque, should continue to be prayed in the church of Nossa Senhora da Serra of Goa. This obligation was entailed to an orchard in that city, which he had received as a dowry upon his marriage to his first wife, Isabel de Sousa, and had given to his daughter, Beatriz de Albuquerque, at the time of her own marriage.

Will of António do Prado, son of Cristóvão do Prado, ordering his grave in the chapel of Santo Ildefonso, in the church of the College of Nossa Senhora da Graça of Coimbra, which had been instituted by doutor Afonso do Prado, his grandfather. He had instituted a chapel, appointing Francisco Monteiro Cardoso, his brother-in-law, as administrator. If the institution maintained itself, it would remain as stated in this document. If revoked, the assets would be entailed to the chapel of Santo Ildefonso, in the College of Graça, and to the hermitage of São João Batista, located in the Quinta de Valdança, on the outskirts of Podentes, with charges. The administration of both would belong to the reitor and priests of the College of Nossa Senhora da Graça, who nominates their executors.

Will of Luísa do Canto ordering, among other dispostions, the foundation of an entail in Angra, Terceira island, with a perpetual obligation of 52 masses prayed every year, wherever the administrator saw fit. Despite that, she ordered that her body should be buried in the chapel of Jesus, in the see of Angra. She named her nephew and niece João Pacheco de Vasconcelos and Luísa de Vasconcelos as first administrators, with the condition that every year they should alternate one another on the administration, as long as Luísa lived, and after their deaths João should appoint one of his sons or daughters to succeed on the administration with the same conditions. Besides her real state she also entailed a black slave named Manuel.

Will of Diogo de Sousa, in which he declares that he is the first administrator of the entail instituted by his parents Diogo de Sousa Alcoforado and Isabel de Madureira. Diogo states that the amount of properties listed by his father could not be entailed. In this will, the son decides to entail all the remaining properties, stating that the rules of the entail should be the same as those outlined by his parents.

Will made by Francisco Vaz da Fonseca in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual mass obligation of five masses celebrated every year in the mother church of Angra, Terceira island, where his body should be buried. He named his father as first administrator of the entail during his lifetime, but with no obligation of ordering the celebration of the masses. After his death, the entail should be administrated by his sister Ana who could appoint one or her daughters to succeed her or give the entail as part of a dowry to one of her daughters, if any of them wished to get married. From there on the succession should always continue in any female daughter, always appointed by the last female administrator, and, in the absence of female heirs, the male could administrate the entail, but only until a new female was born. If Ana had no children, the entail's administration should be given to one of the daughters of André Fernandes.

Will made by Luzia Teixeira in which she ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual mass obligation of one mass celebrated every week in her chapel of N. Sra. da Conceição in the convent of S. Francisco of Vila da Praia, Terceira island, where her body should be buried. She named her husband João Cardoso as first administrator of the entail and after his death their son Sebastião, and from there on the succession should continue on the eldest male heir. If Sebastião died without heirs, the administration should be given to their sons João or António, with the same conditions.

Will of Beatriz de Meneses, countess of Marialva and Loulé. Beatriz states that she and her late husband had a great devotion to the Order of St. Francis. For that reason, they determined to found a monastery dedicated to S. António, in their farmestead of S. António de Ferreirim, in which they would both be buried. The Countess declared that all her descendants and heirs had died and that she therefore had full power over her inheritance. She decided to declare the Infante D. Luís as her universal heir. At the same time, the testator decided to reserve rural properties and to incorporate them into a chapel to be instituted in the convent of S. António de Ferreirim. The first administrator of the chapel would be Francisco Gouveia, "criado" of her late husband. Succession would always occur by joint appointment of the judge of Lamego and the dean of the cathedral. If the last possessor of the entail had a male child, he could succeed, but this always depended on the will of the judge and the dean. According to Beatriz's wishes, the administrator could not be a "fidalgo", a rich or powerful person.

Will of Manuel Pacheco and his wife Margarida da Silva in which they ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail, composed of several properties in Terceira island, with masses celebrated in the chapel of Santíssimo Sacramento in Angra's cathedral, where their bodies should be buried as well as their descendants. They named their eldest son António Pacheco to be the first administrator and all of his brothers after him, and after the death of all of them the entail's administration should be transmitted to the eldest male son or grandson of António Pacheco, and their eldest descendants after them, preferring the male over the female. All administrators should bare the surname "Pacheco" and annex one third of their own reserved portions to the entail, or lose the administration. Illegitimate children and madcap were excluded from the administration.

Will made by Jorge Dias de Andrade in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail, composed of his own reserved portion, with a perpetual obligation of three chapels of masses celebrated in every week in the see of Angra, Terceira island, one for his soul and the other for his first and second wifes. He named his niece Branca de Sá to administrate the entail, and one of her nephews, sons of Garcia de Andrade and Fernando Gomes de Tapia, to succeed her on the administration, with the same condition of appointing the next administrator by the time of his death. Every administrator of the entail had the obligation of marrying an orphan girl every year. As to the chapel founded by Catarina Álvares de Coelho, he appointed his nephew Francisco Vaz, and after his death, Diogo de Sá, son of Garcia de Andrade and Fernando Gomes de Tapia.

Will made by Catarina Evangelho in which she ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail, composed of properties in Porto Martins and an estate named Quinta da Ribeira, Terceira island, with a perpetual obligation of one mass celebrated in every week in the chapel of Santíssimo Sacramento, in church of Santa Cruz, in Vila da Praia, where her and her descendants should be buried. She named her husband, Manuel Teixeira de Melo, as first administrator and all of their children after him, alternating in every two years, from the eldest to the youngest . After all of them were dead, the administration should be given to her eldest male grandson, son of Manuel. If he had no male heirs, the administration should be given to the eldest son of Joana or Luís. And if there were no male heirs of any of them, the administration should be given to her cousin Diego de Barcelos, and after him his closest relative.

Will made by Gregório Teixeira in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual mass obligation a daily mass celebrated at his grave in the church of Santa Cruz of Vila da Praia, Terceira island, and other pious obligations such as dress two poor man or woman in every year, give a pension worth 500 réis to the hospital of the Lázaros and 500 réis to the Misericórdia of Vila da Praia. He named his wife Maria Vadinho as first administrator and his brother-in-law Simão Rodrigues after her, continuing the succession in the nephews of his wife, Paulo, son of Simão Dias, then the two sons of Isabel Dias, Tinetro Rodrigues [sic] and Tinetro Teixeira [sic]. Each of these administrators should administrate the entail for three years and then transmit the administration to the next. The last one remaining should be succeeded by his eldest male heir, or the female in the absence of male. If there were no descendants from the last administrator he should appoint an honourable man [homem bom].

Will of Rui Mendes Mesquita, in which he declares that his body should be buried in the church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, in Guimarães. Together with his wife Margarida, they reserved their "terças" for the establishment of a "morgado", which would be attached to the chapel where Rui's father, Fernando Mesquita, was buried, also in the church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. They appointed their son, Fernando Mesquita, as the first administrator, stating that he would be obliged to entail his share of his parents' inheritance. He was to be succeeded by his first-born son. Clerics, illegitimate children and those who had committed lese-majeste crimes were excluded from the administration. Successors were also compelled to use the family name, to marry and to entail more property.

Will by which Catarina da Mota, Francisco Fialho's widow, establishes an entail with her farmstead (quinta) in Unhos, outskirts of Lisboa, instituting the pious obligation of celebrating 30 masses in the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Rosário of the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. It should be administered by her sisters Margarida da Mota and Maria de Almada during their lifetime. They must be succeeded by their niece, Antónia de Almada.
The institutor establishes another entail with houses in Rua da Porta Nova, in Lisboa, whose revenues should support the celebration of 30 annual masses in the chapel of Jesus of that church. Her sisters Margarida da Mota and Maria de Almada would administer it during their lifetime. After their deaths, it would be inherited by her niece Leonor Godinho. The testator chooses to be buried inside that convent.

Her farmstead of Romeira, in the outskirts of Almada, entailed to her entail, will have the same obligations of the farmstead of Nossa Senhora da Luz. The testator also declares that the entail's administrators will be the administrators of her chapel of Espírito Santo in the monastery of S. Francisco of Lisbon.

Will by which padre Manuel de Sampaio expresses his wish to be buried in the hermitage of S. Sebastião of Nissa and establishes an entail with a perpetual obligation of 30 annual masses over his burial place. He named his brother Fernando Gonçalves de Sampaio as first administrator during his lifetime and, after his death, he would be succeeded by his nephew Diogo de Sampaio, son of his brother António de Sampaio, but only if Diogo's brother João de Sampaio didn't receive the administration of the chapel of S. Sebastião, otherwise it would pass to Fernando Gonçalves' children, to prevent accumulation. From there on the succession should continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. All entailed assets should be registered in a book for proper inventory.

Will made by padre António Dias Temudo in which he ordered the foundation of two entails that would be administrated by his sons António Dias Carrasco and Álvaro de Moura, both legitimized with royal permission. The first entail would be composed of houses, lands, orchards and other assets in Nisa's district, over which he imposed a perpetual pious obligation of thirty masses celebrated every year on the mother church of Nisa, and to administrate it he named António Dias Carrasco during his lifetime, and, after his death, the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. The second entail would also be composed of four estates, lands and houses over which he imposed a perpetual pious obligation of thirty masses celebrated every year on the mother church of Nisa, and to administrate it he named Álvaro de Moura during his lifetime, and, after his death, the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. The institutor expressed his wishes to found those entails to ensure that the memory os his House would endure forever, ordering António to preserve an oratory that he held on his own house that would serve as head of his entail. Children born out of legitimate marriage would be immediatly excluded from the administration of the entail, as well as anyone convicted with crimes of lese-majeste.

Ana Leitão, his wife, to be its first administrators. The testator demands that his body should be buried inside the cloister of the convent of S. Domingos.

Ana Henriques, and the souls of their relatives and benefactors, and entails to it 20 000 reis of revenue from his properties. He also gives his farm in Cruz da Pedra to his grandson, Henrique Mendes de Lapenha, and, if he dies, to his daughter, D. Leonor Henriques.
