Will chart

Will chart in which Guiomar Soares expresses her wish of being buried in the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo de Lisboa. The testator orders the sale of her assets to purchase houses located in Lisboa, which had to be entailed to the pious charges she establishes. She appoints Gaspar Afonso, her husband, first administrator. He should be succeeded in the chapel’s administration by Helena Soares, who had been raised in the institutor's house. If Helena Soares died, Jerónimo de Barros, Guiomar's cousin, should succeed.
Guiomar Soares also leaves part of her houses in Calçada Íngreme to her servants, the sisters Antónia Ferreira and Brígida Ferreira, with the obligation of fulfilling a perpetual mass for her soul at the same convent.

Will of Simão Vaz de Camões, ordering his grave in his chapel of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, located in the new church of the monastery of São Domingos de Coimbra, still under construction. He entails assets to fulfill the charges, entailed only after the death of Francisca Rebelo, his second wife and universal heiress, who was supposed to administer it. It was up to the woman to choose the next administrator, and then followed by the eldest son.
This is followed an approval deed (dated 1574-07-13) and an opening deed of a will (dated 1581-03-30).

She established a chapel there, entailing assets to fulfill the charges, celebrated in her sister's chapel, and appoints Aires Gomes de Sá, her nephew, heir and executor, administrator of the chapel. After his death, the administration would be for his eldest son.

He named his brother Gaspar Gonçalves Vieira to administrate the entail and, preferably, the eldest male successor after him. If died without descendants, the entail's administration should be transmitted, in this order, to João de Barcelos, Bartolomeu Gato, Francisco Vieira and Maria, daughter of Manuel Viera, and, finally, the Confraria do Santíssimo Sacramento.

She leaves her property to Maria, her niece, who could only inherit it after the age of 27, with charge of masses, celebrated in the monastery of São Pedro de Águias. If she died or had no children, she would stay with the executor and with Manuel Vaz, her brother, godson of the institutor, with the same charges.

He institutes an entail with all of his assets, with an obligation of masses celebrated in the chapel of São Bernardo of the church of Canas de Senhorim, which the first administrator had to have built. He appoints Manuel de Figueiredo Machado, his brother, first administrator, with the obligation to entail his movable assets. If the latter died without legitimate children, Bernarda, natural daughter of institutor, would have to succeed him, on condition that she marry Manuel, the natural son of first administrator.

She leaves her house, located in Castelo Branco, to Catarina, her maid, with charges. After her death, her sisters should appoint the next administrator, and the house should always be in the possession of an orphan, appointed by the administrator. She also entails the rest of her assets, having fulfilled the legacies, and appoints Mónica de Santo Agostinho, her sister, first administrator, to whom her sister, Simoa da Ascensão, should succeed. The next administrator was to be appointed by the previous ones, having to be related to the founder and the Silva lineage.

Catarina do Amaral Cabral, his wife, ordering their grave in the mother church of Santa Maria de Chãs, until they could have been transferred to the chapel they were going to establish. The institution is made with the consent of Domingos do Amaral Cabral, son of the institutors, who also entails his heritage.

Will chart made by Pedro Eanes, Escudeiro, and his wife Isabel Gomes, in which they ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of two entails with a perpetual mass obligation of one mass celebrated every year, entailing some properties in Ponte de Lima and endowing two of their nieces, daughters of Margarida Afonso and Catarina Afonso. After the death of each of them, the succession should continue, preferably, on their eldest male heirs. They also left a land to the Misericórdia of Ponta Delgada with the perpetual obligation of a weekly mass.

Will chart made by João Gonçalves and his wife Branca Gomes in which they ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail in Ponta da Garça, Vila Franca do Campo, with a perpetual mass obligation of a weekly mass. They named the priest Jerónimo Perdigão as first administrator of the entail, and their son João Gonçalves after him. After the death of João the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. If he had no heirs, the administration should be given to Madalena Álvares, daughter of João Gonçalves or the closest living relative. They excluded their son-in-law Belchior Gonçalves of the administration.

Will chart made by Maria Soares Baeta, in which she ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual mass obligation of five masses celebrated every year on the convent of S. Francisco of Alter do Chão, where her body should be buried. She named both her nieces Maria Soares and Catarina de Jesus to administrate the entail during their lifes, and after the death of the first one, the administration would be go to the other. After their deaths, the administration should be assumed by to the eldest female daughter of the last one of two firstly appointed administrators, and from there on the succession should continue, preferably, on the eldest female daughter. If none of them had children, the administration would be transmitted to Domingas Gonçalves who would administrate it during her lifetime and appoint a successor before her death. All administrators were obliged to entail their own reserved portions to the entail. Only the Visitador do Bispo could take accounts on the administration.

Will chart made by padre António Rodrigues Alemão, in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of a chapel in the mother church of Assumar, where his body should be buried, with a perpetual obligation of 180 masses celebrated every year. He named his brother Francisco Rodrigues as first administrator of the chapel with the condition that he would marry with the eldest daughter of Francisco Gonçalves Alemão, and from there on the succession should continue on their descendants. If Francisco Rodrigues had no children, then the administration would be handled to the eldest male heir of Francisco Gonçalves Alemão. The institutor ordered that an image of S. António should be provided and placed on this chapel, that should be completed by the administrators.

Will chart made in by Catarina da Costa, in which she ordered the foundation of an entail with a perpetual mass obligation of ten masses celebrated every year on the church of N. Sra. da Devesa, in Castelo de Vide, where her body should be buried. She appointed her niece Bárbara da Costa as first administrator of the entail during her lifetime. By the time of Bárbara's death, the institutor disposed that she could split the entailed assets in two parts, if she wished to, and bequeath each part to one of her children with the condition that they would order the perpetual celebration of five masses every year. From there on the succession should continue on the heir appointed by the last administrator. If Bárbara died without heirs, the administration would be handled to the closest relative.

After his death, the administration should fall to Luzia Batista, his sister, according to the institution. After her death, it should go to the grandson of João Rodrigues de Castelo Branco who was alive.

She established two entails, incorporating on both of them half of her assets for the fulfillment of the masses celebrated in that church. She designated her nephew António Rodrigues Minaya to be the administrator of one of them, and her nephew Manuel de Sousa to succeed on the other. In case of extinction of the lineage of one, the entail would be transferred to the administrator of the other entail. Followed by some additions.

He establishes an entail and chapel, entailing all his assets, located in the Quinta de Pedrógão and on the outskirts of Torres Novas and Porto de Mós. He appoints Manuel de Sousa de Alvim, his son, executor and first administrator, to be succeded by his eldest male son. In case of extinction of the lineage, the administration would pass to the monastery of São Martinho de Tibães.
He establishes another entail and chapel, entailing a farm, located in Seiça, on the outskirts of Ourém. He appoints Simão de Sousa de Alvim, his son, first administrator. The charges were to be celebrated in the church of Seiça. The same clauses had to be fulfilled for the institution of the entail of the Quinta de Pedrógão.
He establishes another entail and chapel, entailing grain income, in the amount of 100.000 réis, coming from Alfeizerão. He appoints Pedro de Melo de Sousa, his son, first administrator. The charges were to be celebrated in the church of Alfeizerão. The same clauses had to be fulfilled for the institution of the entail of the Quinta de Pedrógão.
He establishes another chapel, entailing a farm, located in Vila Verde, in the municipality of Vila Chã, on the outskirts of Braga. The institutor named D. Branca, his wife, as first administrator during her lifetime and, after her death, D. Branca would be succeeded by a grandson of father of Miguel Tavares and from there on the succession should continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir, legitimate and had the family name Caldeira Tavares.

Will chart made by Catarina Marques, in which she ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of a chapel with a perpetual pious obligation of masses celebrated every year, to be administrated during their lifetime by her nieces Isabel Fernandes and Margarida, daughters of Manuel Fernandes. Isabel Fernandes was supposed to live in the houses all her lifetime, paying Margarida 2.000 réis every year. After their death, the chapel should be administrated by the eldest son of the last administrator to die and, from there on, the succession should continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir.
Catarina Marques also ordered two other chapels, by entailing a land (souto), in the location of Juntas, on the outskirts of Marvão, with a perpetual pious obligation of masses celebrated every year, to be administrated during their lifetime by her nephews Pedro and Maria, children of Manuel Fernandes. The assets would be divided into equal parts, being administered separately. After their death, the chapel should be administrated by the eldest son of the last administrator to die and, from there on, the succession should continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir.

From there on the succession should continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir.

Will chart made by Maria Fernandes do Adro, in which she, among other dispositions, orders the foundation of chapel with a perpetual pious obligation of a mass celebrated every year in the hermitage of Nossa Senhora de Sanguinheira, to be administrated by Leonor, her niece, during her lifetime.
In the same document, Maria Fernandes orders the foundation others chapels with a perpetual obligation of pious charges, to be administrated respectively by the sons of the deceased Simão Vaz, by Pedro Vaz and by Brás Dias. The three parts could not be divided into inheritances and must always be administered by descendants of the first administrators.
In addition, she establishes another chapel, also with a perpetual pious obligation of a mass celebrated every year in the hermitage of São Pedro of Amieira, to be administrated by Sebastião, her nephew, during his lifetime.
Maria Fernandes establishes another chapel, equally with a perpetual pious obligation of one mass celebrated every year, to be administrated by Ana, daughter of Beatriz Fernandes, her niece, during her lifetime.
Finally, she establishes another chapel with a perpetual pious obligation of three masses celebrated every year at the altar of São Miguel, in the mother church of Amieira and in the hermitage of Espírito Santo, to be administrated by Simão Vaz, her nephew, during his lifetime.

Will chart of Baltasar Pereira de Castelo Branco, in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual pious obligation of two masses celebrated every week in Arronches. The institutor named Isabel Tavares, his wife, as first administrator during her lifetime and, after her death, she would be succeeded by Belchior Velez de Castelo Branco. After his death, he would be succeeded by Baltasar, his son, and from there on the succession should continue, preferably, on the male heir.
The founder was administrator of the chapel of Lopo Curvo, in the mother church of Arronches, so he annexes assets to that chapel, in order to fulfill the clauses of the institution.

Will chart by which Cristóvão Lopes founded an entail, incorporating his farmstead (quinta) of Belmonte, in the outskirts of Lisboa, and his houses in Lisboa, with the pious obligation of celebrating 20 annual masses (10 for each property), in the chapels of Jesus and Nossa Senhora do Rosário, in the Convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. Joana de Sousa, his wife, was asked to administer the entail until Francisco de Sousa, Cristóvão's grandson, turned 25 years old and was allowed to take control of it. If Francisco died before that age, or without offspring, the entail should pass to Isabel de Sousa, Joana's daughter and Cristóvão's stepdaughter. He also bequeaths to his grandson a farmstead (quinta) located in Vale do Alcaide, which the testator had bought with the obligation of supporting the celebration of 12 annual masses in the church of S. Cristóvão, in Lisboa. The testator mentions that, at the time of death of D. João III, he was painting the altarpieces of the monastery of Alcobaça and of Évora's cathedral. Domingos of Lisboa. She also asks him to ensure that the pious obligations instituted by her late sister, Beatriz Dias, in the church of Santa Justa of that city, are duly fulfilled each year.
The testator establishes another entail with houses in Lisboa and a public debt instrument of 9 500 réis in Casa da Índia, bequeathing it to her stepdaughter, Maria Dias, who was asked to support the celebration of annual masses in the church of Santa Justa. Margarida declares that her remains should be buried in the main chapel of that church, where her husband's body lies.

This third includes a property (casal) she owns in Vila Fria and its income should be used to fulfil perpetual pious charges for her soul and for the souls of her husband, her daughter Catarina Eanes and other family members.

Will chart by which Violante Gonçalves, Afonso Eanes' widow, entails her houses in Lisboa with an obligation of 12 anniversaries prayed annually by the bacharéis da Sé de Lisboa over her tomb. She appoints Jorge Afonso, her son, bacharel, João Rodrigues and Estêvão da Maia, correeiros do Rei, to be the executors of her will and administrators of her chapel. When they die, the administration of the chapel shall be given to their three eldest sons and to their successors afterwards. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1526-12-06.

Will chart by which Padre António Coutinho, freire do hábito de Avis, confirmed the donation of all his assets to his brother, Francisco António, and his wife, Catarina Galvão, declaring that those properties could never be sold or exchanged. They both were obligated to support the celebration of a perpetual weekly mass for the souls of his parents and masses during the feasts of Nossa Senhora. If the couple left no descendants, the entail would be inherited by the brotherhood of Santo Sacramento of Veiros and not by the Galvão family, as previously stated by the institutor. The testator determined that the entail had to be passed to the eldest son of its administrators. He referred that, after his death, his body would be buried in the church of Salvador of Veiros. Will chart by which Bartolomeu Perestrelo, João Lopes Perestrelo's son, established an entail with all his assets, including properties in Ermegeira, Monte Redondo and Lobagueira, in the outskirts of Torres Vedras. He designated his brother, António Perestrelo, to administrate it, ordering him and his successors to support the celebration of a perpetual daily mass for his soul in the chapel of Trindade of the church of S. Pedro de Torres Vedras, where his parents lied. The entail had to be transmitted to his eldest son, who would have to use the family name. He also appointed his brother to become the tutor of his son, Rodrigo, who he had brought from Sofala. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1514-03-15.

Will chart by which D. Maria de Vilhena, Simão da Silveira's widow, established a chapel of 3 daily perpetual masses, which would be celebrated in the main chapel of the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo of Évora. She appointed Jerónimo de Carvalho, her uncle, and Sancho de Faria, her nephew, to administrate it, leaving a public debt instrument of 100 000 réis and a rent (foro) of wheat taken from properties in Moura, Beja and Évora to support the pious obligations. The administrators had to erect a chapel in that convent, where a family mausoleum would be built. All the properties she left to her uncle and a public debt instrument of 14 000 given to Madalena Mendes, her ama, would end up being passed to Sancho de Faria and entailed to the chapel. The latter would leave all the entailed assets to his eldest son.
She left a public debt instrument of 100 000 réis to the Misericórdia of Évora, obligating its brothers to provide for poor men and to give dowries to orphan girls every year.
The institutor established another entail with the properties that she inherited after her parents' death, which her brother, Pedro de Tovar, held from her. She appointed her nephew, Sancho de Tovar, to administrate it and declared that it should be transmitted to his descendants. The testator determined that her body had to be buried in the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, inside the grave of her late husband. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1562-10-23 and an undated and unapproved codicil.

Will chart by which doutor António Dias Zagalo expresses his wish to be buried in the convent of S. Francisco, preferably in front of the chapels of S. Francisco or of Santo António. He designates his wife, Isabel Fernandes, as his heir and executor, with the obligation of ordering 12 annual masses for his soul, entailed to the properties she inherits from him. The entail shall pass to their eldest son or daughter. If they have no descendants, it will be inherited by their closest relatives, with the exception of Rui Gomes da Vidigueira and his successors.

Maria Velez, his wife, express their wish to be buried in the convent of Anunciada of Tomar. They establish an entail and chapel with their casais, farmlands and other properties in Tomar and its surrounding area, headed by their houses in Tomar. They also annex to it their silver serving set. They designate their eldest son, Manuel Ferreira da Silveira, as first administrator and his descendants afterwards. They will have the obligation of ordering twelve annual masses for their souls.

Will chart by which Maria Leitão, Ana Trigueiros, Margarida Trigueiros and Antónia Trigueiros, João Leitão and Leonor Trigueiros' daughters, stated that, until the death of the last of them, the ones who survived would administrate their patrimony. After their demise, their estate would be passed to Maria de Barros, their niece, António Trigueiros' wife, with the obligation that her and her descendants supported the celebration of 16 annual masses in the convent of Santo António of Varatojo, where the testators' remains would be buried. This pious obligation would be perpetually associated to the properties in A dos Cunhados, Torres Vedras, which could not never be sold or exchanged. Maria de Barros and António Trigueiros were allowed, during their lifetime, to do whatever they wanted with the majority of the inherited properties. At the time of their deaths, the remaining assets would be incorporated in the entail containing the lands in A dos Cunhados. If Maria de Barros died without appointing a successor, the entail would be passed to her husband and his heirs. Followed by declarations issued on 1580-11-01 and an approval deed issued on 1580-11-02.

Will chart by which Bento Gonçalves de Sequeira, Cavaleiro da Casa do Rei, bequeathed the third part of his assets, including his farmstead (quinta) of Fonte Coberta, to his son, Belchior de Burgos, contador, obligating him and his descendants to give, each year, 4 500 réis to the church of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires of Lisboa to support the celebration of annual masses for his soul. After his death, the entail would be inherited by his eldest son. He also left him his post of Escrivão das Fianças. The testator declared that his body had to be buried alongside the remains of his wife, Helena de Burgos, and of his brother-in-law, Pedro de Burgos, in that church. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1568-07-26.

She bequeaths António Álvares and his wife, Margarida Lourenço, and their heirs, her properties in Monsaraz with an obligation of 60 annual masses for her soul, 30 in the church of São Nicolau and the other 30 in the church of Santa Iria of Santarém, and other pious obligations.

Will chart made by Pedro Alves, homem que vivia de sua fazenda, and his wife, Inês Brás. The former left the third part of his assets, including vineyards and lands in Rossais to his wife, ordering her to fulfil various legacies. After the death of his wife, that estate should be delivered to his niece, Vitória do Rego, with the obligation of supporting the celebration of 56 annual masses for his soul in the church of S. João Batista of Lumiar. If those assets were sold, the pious obligation had to go with them.
The testators left lands in Albogas to Maria Brás, Inês' sister, with the obligation of celebrating 2 masses, every year, for their souls in the church of Almargem do Bispo.
They also left a rent (foro) in a vineyard to João Gonçalves, their brother-in-law, and his wife, obligating them to celebrate an annual mass for their souls in an unidentified church. After their deaths, the entail would be inherited by their daughter, Maria.
Inês Brás determined that, after the death of her husband, all her assets had to be delivered to her nephew, Duarte, who would be responsible for celebrating, each year, 57 masses in the church of S. João Batista. If he died before receiving that inheritance, it would pass to Santos, another nephew of Inês Brás.
The testators declared that their bodies would be buried in the church of S. João Batista of Lumiar. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1569-08-30.

Will chart by which Jerónimo de Quintanilha, comendador da Ordem de Cristo, expresses his wish to be buried in the convent of Capuchos da Madre de Deus, near the archbishop D. Gaspar, his uncle. He designates his sister, Cosma Rodrigues de Quintanilha, as administrator of the chapel of Isabel Afonso, of which he was the current administrator by appointment from his father, João de Quintanilha. If Cosma Rodrigues dies before him, or without successors, the chapel shall pass to Maria Duarte, daughter of their sister Beatriz de Quintanilha. He also bequeaths her an orchard in Caspolima, Oeiras, to which he entails an obligation of three annual masses in the monastery of Santíssima Trindade of Lisboa, for his and his parents' souls. After her death, it shall pass to the person whom she appoints as heir of the chapel of Isabel Afonso, so the two obligations are always together.
He bequeaths his nephew, Jerónimo Quintanilha, who lives in S. Miguel, or his sister, 18 000 serafins or pardaus, under condition that he moves to Lisboa with his family and buys properties to entail to an obligation of four annual masses in the monastery of Santíssima Trindade.
