Will

Will of Branca Álvares, ordering her grave in the monastery of São Francisco of Montemor-o-Novo, in the grave of António Leão, her father-in-law. She instituted a chapel in the monastery of São Francisco of Montemor-o-Novo, for which she left 100 000 réis in cash and to which she entailed various incomes. Her slave, named António, if she didn't do it in life, should also be sold, reverting the money to the chapel. She appoints Maria Quaresma as her executor and administrator of the chapel. If she did not accept the executor must be Tomé Álvares. If the chapel administrator failed to comply with the institution's determinations, the guardião of the São Francisco's monastery had to ensure it.

Will by which Vasco Esteves, prior da igreja de Algodres, bequeaths his farmstead (quinta) of Figueira, Santarém, and mills (azenhas) in Coruche to Vicente Esteves, his brother, with the obligation of giving barrels of red wine and wheat to the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa, each year. Its friars should celebrate annual masses in exchange for that donation. The testator's remains should be buried inside that convent.

She had previously donated two parts of her possessions to that chapel. She appoints Miguel Vivas, first administrator. If he had already died, the administration would be left to Álvaro Gonçalves. It was up to the administrator to choose the following. If not, the vigário would choose the administrator.

Will of Fernando Álvares da Cunha, ordering his grave in the chapel of Santo António of the church of Nossa Senhora da Vitória, in Lisboa, as determined in a contract previously signed with the officers of the brotherhood of that church. He establishes an entail with his houses and other properties in Lisboa and its outskirts, with obligations of masses for his and his wife's soul. He designates as first administrator Lourenço da Cunha, who was to marry Ana da Cunha, daughter of Jorge da Cunha. A legitimate male child was to succeed him. If the marriage did not take place, the successor would be D. Pedro da Cunha, presidente na alçada. Joana Vaz, wife of the institutor, would have the usufruct of the proceeds of the entail's assets during her lifetime.

Will by which Jorge de Albuquerque, do Conselho Ultramarino, cavaleiro professo da Ordem de Cristo, son of Fernando de Albuquerque, governador do Estado da Índia, expresses his wish to be buried in the chapel he and his second wife, D. Ana de Noronha, bought in the antechorus of the church of the monastery of Santíssima Trindade of Lisboa.
He designates his only grandson, D. António da Silveira de Albuquerque, son of his deceased daughter, Beatriz de Albuquerque, and of Jerónimo da Silveira, as his universal heir. He bequeaths him all of his properties in Lisboa, Paio Pires and Torres Vedras as an entail. This entail shall be joined to and have the same clauses of succession as the entail of Afonso Mexia, established in 1550-10-03, which António da Silveira de Albuquerque had inherited from his grandmother, Beatriz Mexia. The administrator shall take a part of his entail's properties to order a daily mass for his soul in the monastery of Santíssima Trindade, rescue captives, marry orphans and establish two mercieiros in his chapel. His wife, D. Ana de Noronha, shall have the usufruct of a third part of the properties of the entail during her lifetime. If his grandson refuses these conditions, or dies without succession, the administration of the entail shall pass to the priests of Santíssima Trindade, who shall appoint a layman as the next administrator.
Jorge Albuquerque appoints his grandson as administrator of the chapel of his grandparents in the mother church of Beja. He also orders that the obligation of masses for the soul of his father, Fernando de Albuquerque, should continue to be prayed in the church of Nossa Senhora da Serra of Goa. This obligation was entailed to an orchard in that city, which he had received as a dowry upon his marriage to his first wife, Isabel de Sousa, and had given to his daughter, Beatriz de Albuquerque, at the time of her own marriage.

Will of Beatriz de Meneses, countess of Marialva and Loulé. Beatriz states that she and her late husband had a great devotion to the Order of St. Francis. For that reason, they determined to found a monastery dedicated to S. António, in their farmestead of S. António de Ferreirim, in which they would both be buried. The Countess declared that all her descendants and heirs had died and that she therefore had full power over her inheritance. She decided to declare the Infante D. Luís as her universal heir. At the same time, the testator decided to reserve rural properties and to incorporate them into a chapel to be instituted in the convent of S. António de Ferreirim. The first administrator of the chapel would be Francisco Gouveia, "criado" of her late husband. Succession would always occur by joint appointment of the judge of Lamego and the dean of the cathedral. If the last possessor of the entail had a male child, he could succeed, but this always depended on the will of the judge and the dean. According to Beatriz's wishes, the administrator could not be a "fidalgo", a rich or powerful person.

Will of João Pinto de Vasconcelos, written before professing. He entails his assets in chapel, to fulfill the charges, celebrated in the church of Caria. He appoints Maria Pinto de Vasconcelos, his sister, heir and administrator. It was then up to her to appoint the son or daughter who should succeed her in the administration. Luís Pinto, his brother, could bring half of the chapel during his lifetime.

Will made by Diogo Dias, in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of a chapel with a perpetual pious obligation of masses celebrated every year in the chapel of Espírito Santo, in the church of São Lourenço of Portalegre. The institutor named Maria Álvares, his wife, as first administrator during her lifetime and, after her death, she would be succeeded by Ana, daughter of Gaspar Dias, with the condition of marrying João de Gibães. From there on the succession should continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir.

Will of father José Tinoco Vieira. The testator declares that he had built a chapel dedicated to São Veríssimo, next to the house where he was born, in Santa Maria de Telhado, to which he also bequeathed lands in São Cristóvão de Pico de Regalados. He appointed his brother João Tinoco Vieira as administrator. The chaplain was to be a suitable person recruited from among the relatives of the founder's father or mother. The documents relating to the chapel and its property were to be recorded in the "Livro das Capelas da cidade de Braga".

Followed by the approval deed (1692-03-26, fls. 14v-15) and the opening deed (1692-04-02, fl. 15).

Will by which Maria de Alverca bequeaths houses in Lisboa to Francisco Figueira de Azevedo with the obligation of celebrating 107 annual masses for her soul in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa.
The testator establishes another entail with houses in Lisboa, appointing Francisco Ferreira, her criado, to be its first administrator. He was obligated to light a torch in the chapel of Santíssimo Sacramento of that church every Holy Thursday. For the first two years after Maria's death, the houses should be delivered to the executors of her will, who would employ its revenues to fulfil her legacies. If Francisco leaves no descendants, this entail should be transmitted to Briolanja de Lemos.
Maria declares that her body should be buried inside that church, next to the chapel of Jesus.

Will by which Gaspar Gil Severim expresses his wish to be buried in the chapterhouse of the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa and establishes two entails.
He establishes an entail with the third part of the properties of his first wife, Antónia de Faria, and a part of his own third, and appoints his only remaining son from this first marriage, Francisco de Faria Severim, as its heir and administrator. He also bequeaths him the houses which he inherited from his third-grandmother, Constança Pires, with the obligation of 30 masses in the convent of Santíssima Trindade; the houses which he had inherited from his parents, [António Gil Severim and Catarina Lopes Morim], who had entailed it with the obligation of 35 masses in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa; a farmstead in Benfica and other houses in Lisboa which he received as dowry from Catarina Mateus Galvão, aunt of his first wife, with an obligation of masses. He mentions an obligation of keeping a lamp lit in the ermida de Nossa Senhora da Madre de Deus in his Quinta de Subserra, and seven masses for the soul of Fernando Cordeiro, provedor do arcebispado de Lisboa. He also establishes an obligation of a daily mass in the ermida de Nossa Senhora da Humildade which he built in his quinta de Subserra, which shall be the head of this entail.
He establishes another entail with the remaining part of his third part, and the third part of his second wife, Juliana de Faria, also deceased, and bequeaths it to his eldest son from this second marriage, Manuel de Faria Severim. He establishes an obligation of an annual mass in the ermida de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, which belongs to a farmstead he started to build near his quinta de Subserra, which is part of this entail.
If the lineage of any of his sons is extinguished, their respective entail shall be inherited by the other or by their successors.

She can appoint the next administrator among their relatives.

Will by which Catarina Chorra Caldeira, Jorge de Pina do Lago's wife, established a chapel with all her assets, including houses, lands in Sardoal ("terras do Chão de Gracia Dias, a tapada de Santana, a herdade do Ribeiro Davide") and objects made of gold and silver, designating her great-niece, Teresa Canseco Caldeira, Joana Caldeira and Pedro Gueifão's daughter, to administrate it. She was obligated to marry according to her parents' will and to transmit the entail to one of her children. All the chapel's administrators had to support the celebration of annual masses for the institutor's soul in the convent of Nossa Senhora da Caridade, where her body would be buried; to give 1 000 reais, each year, to the Provedor da Misericórdia, who would be responsible for assessing the chapel's state; to incorporate new properties in it. The testator also declared that her husband would inherit the farmstead (quinta) of Torre.

Caldeira, Catarina Chorra (d.1611)

Will by which Manuel Afonso, Cavaleiro Fidalgo da Casa do Cardeal Infante, establishes an entail with houses in Lisboa and Caparica, lands in Vale dos Moinhos, Vale de Mofassem and Vale do Regão, appointing his wife, Beatriz de Valadares, to be its first administrator. After her death, she must be succeeded by Maria Fernandes, his cousin, or by António Serpa, her son. The entail administrator's are henceforth obligated to support the celebration of annual masses for his soul in the church of S. Nicolau of Lisboa.
He also bequeaths properties in Évora ("herdade da Fonte Boa", "herdade da Curraleira") to his wife, which should be given after her death, respectively, to the church of S. Mamede and to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of that city. Those institutions must use its revenues to celebrate annual masses for the institutor's soul.
He declares that his body should be buried in the chapel he has inside the church of S. Mamede of Évora. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1555-08-30.

Visitação to the chapel of the souls of the Purgatory made by António de Barros Aranha, abade of the church of the monastery of Salvador de Sabadim, and commissioner of the Inquisition, attesting that the chapel was fit for catholic cult.

Resignation and appointment deed

Resignation and appointment deed by which Catarina Fernandes, Gomes Eanes' widow, appoints Pedro Gonçalves, husband of Catarina Eanes, her criada, to be the administrator of the entail she and her husband had established trough their will. In that document, issued on 1480-05-22, they both had declared that after the death of one of them, the surviving member of the couple should inherit lands and houses in Santa Iria da Azóia with the obligation of supporting the celebration of 10 annual masses in the church of that place. The entail's first administrator was obligated to appoint a successor.

Entail foundation deed by which João de Morais Colmieiro, Cavaleiro da Ordem de Cristo e Capitão-mor na vila do Paço, and Ana de Sá, his wife, established and entail with properties in Vale das Fontes, Terra da Torre and Monforte do Rio Monte. After the death of the institutors, it would be transmitted to a son of their choosing and subsequently passed to his descendants. In order to fulfil the last wish of João de Morais Colmieiro's uncle, Jácome de Morais Comieiro, deão of Cape Verde, it is also determined that every administrator of the entail had to support the perpetual celebration of 2 weekly masses in the chapel of Santo Amaro, in Prada, which the testators had built.

Entail foundation deed by António Barbosa Fiúza, priest in São Julião de Passos. The founder recognised the importance of the celebration of perpetual masses for the benefit of souls, which is why he decided to establish a "morgado ou capela", entailing all his possessions. The heir would have the perpetual obligation to ensure that two masses were celebrated every week in the church of Vila Nova de Cerveira, where the founder was born and where he was to be buried. He appointed his nephew Miguel Barbosa Fiúza as the first administrator, or alternatively, if Miguel had obtained a well-paid position, another nephew called Tomé Barbosa Fiúza. First-born sons were preferred to succeed. Each administrator was obliged to use the surnames Barbosa and Fiúza and to marry according to his parents' wishes. If there were two or more relatives with the same degree of kinship, preference was given to those who had obtained a university degree, first those who had studied at the University of Coimbra and then those who had studied at the Sapienza University of Rome. Within two years, an inventory of the estates had to be made, with three copies: one for the administrator, one for the "Livro das Capelas" of the Juízo dos Resíduos and one for the "Provedor da Comarca".

They entail different properties and public debt instruments, some left by Ana de Moura, sister and sister-in-law of the institutors, as an entail. They appoint Baltasar Leitão da Silveira, their son, first administrator, and his sons and descendants should succeed him. Baltasar Leitão da Silveira is bound to fulfil the institution.

Entail foundation deed by which Diogo Marmeleiro and Catarina de Lemos, his wife, found an entail in the chapel of Jesus of the church of Santa Justa of Coimbra. The institution is carried out in the form of a contract, between the institutors and the prior and beneficiados of the church of Santa Justa. The institutors entail various assets, appointed, for the fulfillment of charges, celebrated by the beneficiados of that church, who would receive, annually, 6 000 réis, divided into two tranches. Beneficiados authorize the institutors to be buried in the aforementioned chapel, being able to beautify it as they wish, being, however, obliged to supply various liturgical furnishings.

In case of extinction of the lineage, the administration would pass to the bishops of Elvas. Lopo Vaz de Sequeira and D. Beatriz de Vilhena, his wife, attach assets to the same entail.

They designate their eldest son to become its first administrator, determining that him and his descendants should support the celebration of annual masses for their souls in the church of Santa Maria Madalena of that city, in whose sacristy their chapel would be erected.

Fernando, and Maria Domingues, his wife, established an entail with houses in Lisboa, a farmstead in Montachique ("quinta de Vale Namorado"), lands in Bucelas, Romeira and Sintra. They designated their son, Pedro Afonso, to become its first administrator, obligating him and his successors to sustain a chaplain in the church of S. Bartolomeu of Lisboa, who would be responsible for celebrating perpetual masses for their souls, and to provide for a poor person, giving him/her food and clothes every year. Pedro Afonso had to be succeeded by his brother, João Afonso, or, if he died before him, by his eldest son. The institutors declared their intention to found another entail with properties in Alentejo, who would be administrated by the heirs of Maria Domingues.

The institutor also declared that he had been the administrator of Rui Gonçalves Franco's entail, in the Monastery of Santa Clara de Lisbon, from which he was removed by demand. He wanted to unite both entails if it would be proven that he had the right to administer Rui Gonçalves Franco's entail.

He entails the farm of Penavila, in the parish of São Salvador de Delães, on the outskirts of Barcelos, and a farmhouse (casal) in the parish of São Cristóvão de Rio Mau, to fulfill charges. He appoints Mateus Pereira, his brother, first administrator. The latter had to appoint a legitimate son to succeed him in the administration. If he did not appoint any, the eldest would succeed. If his mother was still alive when the founder died, she would administer the chapel for the rest of her life and only after her death would it pass to Mateus Pereira.

Entail foundation deed by Manuel Madureira de Barbosa. The institutor entails all of his estates and those he had inherited from his father and establishes a chapel dedicated to Santo António, to be located in Mesquinhata, Baião. He appointed his illegitimate son, João de Madureira Barbosa, as the first administrator. The heir was to be the first-born son, excluding illegitimate children and those who had committed lese-majeste crimes.

He entails his farmstead in Santa Comba and appoints Gonçalo Vaz Guedes, his son, as administrator of his entail. It was up to the administrator to name the successor, from among his children. In case of extinction of the lineage, the administration would be left to the abbot of the church of São Miguel.

Entail foundation deed by which Francisco de Matos, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, established an entail with his farmstead (quinta) in Via Longa and houses he had in Lisboa, designating his son, Simão de Matos, to administrate it. All the future administrators of the entail were obligated to support the celebration of 3 weekly masses in the chapel of Pedro de Alcáçova of the church of S. Bartolomeu and 2 anniversary masses, each year, in that church and in the church of Nossa Senhora of Via Longa.
Before dying, Isabel de Alcáçova, his wife, had agreed with the institution of this entail. She had left her husband the third part of assets to incorporate in it, through her will issued on 1523-10-20.

They appointed Sebastião de Resende, Maria Neto's son, to be its first administrator, determining that he and his heirs should support the celebration of annual masses in the chapel of São Valentim of the church of Santa Justa of Lisboa, where António de Resende (father, husband and father-in-law of the institutors) is buried. If none of Sebastião de Resende or José de Resende's descendants survived, the entail would be inherited by their closest male relative.

In addition, the entail would also have masses in the altar of São Pedro de Rates, in Braga Cathedral. They both entailed rents that they had inherited from their aunt Clara da Maia. The entail would be registered in the "Livro do Registo Geral das Capelas" of Braga.

Entail and chapel foundation deed by Father Bartolomeu Velho, parish priest in São Julião de Freixo. Bartolomeu declares that he had built an hermitage in Navió dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção, to which he entailed estates. The administrator of the chapel was to be named in a later will. However, the succession to the chapel was to be by blood, with clerics being preferred. If there were no clerics, the administration would be in the hands of a layman appointed by the last owner. All administrators were obliged to use the family name, to inherit estates and to be Old Christians. Illegitimate children were excluded from the administration.

Entail and chapel foundation deed by Francisco Rodrigues. As a single man with no heirs, Francisco wished to found a chapel "por via de morgado". The masses would be celebrated in the church of Santa Cristina de Algoso. The first administrators would be his brother Gaspar Rodrigues and his nephew José Rodrigues, with the power to appoint a son or daughter in each half of the entail. However, the appointed successor had to be related to the founder.

Entail and chapel foundation deed by Gonçalo de Araújo da Silva and his wife Maria de Caldas Bacelar. The couple declared that they had founded a chapel in their farmstead of Eiras, in São Salvador de Pedralva, the construction of which had not yet been completed but was to be finished, with the images of São Gonçalo and Santa Maria inside. They entailed properties and rents to the chapel, with the perpetual obligation to celebrate masses every sunday for the souls of the founders. The first administrator would be their son-in-law, Sebastião Machado de Azevedo, who had the power to appoint a relative to succeed him, excluding clerics and forbidding marriages with people of Jewish, Moorish, black or mulatto descent. The administrators were obliged to use the family name and to entail properties. The deed of foundation had to be registered in the "Livro das Capelas do Registo Geral" of Braga.

The successor would preferably be the first-born son and was obliged to use the surnames Ribeiro or Coelho.

The founders were administrators of the entail instituted by António de Almeida, his grandfather, to which they entailed a property, in order to fulfill their institution. Dowry deed by which João de Meira Carrilho, canon of Braga Cathedral and commissioner of the Inquisition, son of Gonçalo de Meira and Beatriz Mendes, decided to endow his great-niece Isabel de Meira Carrilho, daughter of Gonçalo Carrilho and Ana da Costa, by her marriage to Estêvão Falcão, fidalgo da casa do rei and son of Manuel Falcão Costa and Ana Maria Teixeira. João de Meira Carrilho left a farmstead in São Miguel do Couto, along with 10,000 cruzados to be used for the purchase of a house and land, declaring that all this property would be entailed. The couple would be the first owners, followed by their descendants, with preference given to first-born sons. The administrators were obliged to use the family name of Meira and to pay for the celebration of 50 annual masses in the Church of Espírito Santo, located in the São Marcos Hospital in Braga, where João de Meira Carrilho would be buried. João de Meira Carrilho also declares that he was the administrator of an entail, located in Castelo de Vide, which had been founded by his father João de Meira, chaplain to the late Infante and Cardinal D. Henrique, and to which he appointed his niece as administrator, since she was of "his blood and generation". João de Meira Carrilho acquired more lands and imposed more masses to be celebrated. He also instructed his heirs to place an image of Christ in the chapel of the mother church of Castelo de Vide. The image was engraved with the relics of several saints. It had belonged to the Emperor Charles V and was given to Manuel Álvares Cardoso when he was secretary to the Marquis of Arronches in Madrid, who bequeathed it to João de Meira Carrilho. In view of its importance, the image and the relics engraved in it were considered to be the head of the entail.

Donation deed in which Amador de Carvalho declares that he and his wife, Joana de Lima, have built a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho, making the necessary donations to the chapel's "fábrica" and establishing an entail that includes assets to be permanently attached to the chapel. They also imposed the obligation of celebrating two masses every week. Leonel de Abreu, a nephew of Joana de Lima, was appointed as administrator. The priest and next of kin would take over after his death. If there were more than two clerics with the same degree of kinship, the most virtuous would be preferred. Lay relatives were admitted only in the absence of clerics. The deed of donation had to be recorded in the "Livro das capelas" of Braga, so that the devotional obligations would be remembered and fulfilled.

Francisco of Lisboa and Cristóvão Rodrigues Becares, by which the latter buys the usufruct of the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia, in their convent, which the Crown had confiscated to Pedro de Baeça, its former owner, for debts. He promises to pay anually to the convent 2 000 reis for its ornamentation and to order a weekly mass for the souls in Purgatory. He designates it as his family's burial place and entails to it his houses in Lisboa, in rua dos Cabides, passing these obligations to his successors. The document mentions an acquisition deed dated 1645-10-24, by which Cristóvão Rodrigues Becares acquired the chapel from Álvaro de Azevedo, who had bought it from Luís Vaz de Resende, who had acquired it through a public auction.

Codicil of Manuel Rodrigues Relego, ordering the celebration of the charges in his chapel, of the invocation of Santo André, located in the monastery of São Francisco of Tavira. He confirms the appointment of Bárbara Romana, his wife, as administrator, to whom Rui Mendes, his nephew, should succeed, if he accepted him. Otherwise, it would be who his wife nominate.

Codicil made by Cristina de Matos by which she confirms the dispositions of her will chart and adds some legacies to it. Among them, she instituted a chapel, entailing the assets she had left to Diogo Tavares with a perpetual pious obligation of five masses celebrated every year at the Altar of Chagas, in the church of Santa Maria de Castelo de Vide. She appointed Diogo Tavares to be the first administrator during his lifetime and, after his death, he shall be succeeded by his descendants.

Chapel foundation deed

Chapel foundation deed by which D. Gonçalo Vaz de Castelo Branco, Regedor da Casa do Cível, and D. Beatriz Valente, his wife, established a chapel in the church of S. Martinho of Lisboa, entailing to it the third part of their assets, which included salterns (marinhas) in Póvoa, lands (casal) in Arruda and houses in Rua de Cata-que-farás, Lisboa. The revenues of those assets would support the celebration of annual masses for their souls and for the souls of the past administrators of the entail of Póvoa ("morgado da Póvoa"). After their deaths, the chapel would be administrated by whomever succeeded in the administration of that entail. The institutors determined that their bodies had to be buried in that chapel. To fulfil the will of Beatriz Eanes, Beatriz Valente's grandmother, who asked her granddaughter to support the celebration of annual masses for her soul in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa, and to honour D. Violante's soul, the institutors determined that the future administrators had to give, each year, 50 réis, wheat and wine to that convent.

Chapel foundation deed by which Diogo Saraiva and his wife Isabel Mendes incorporated several properties and rents of cereal, wine, chestnuts and olive oil, in order to fulfill the chapel's obligations. They wanted to build, at their own expense, the chancel of the hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Penelas, on the outskirts of Lamego. The administrators would be obligated to maintain the hermitage and to ensure the cult. They designated their son, Doutor Domingos Saraiva, to be its first administrator and to be responsible for choosing between one of his brothers, or between one of his nephews, the sucessor of this entail.
