He appoints João Martins, executor of his will, to be its first administrator, who would be succeeded by his eldest son. João Cristóvão, João Martins and their successors are also obligated to support the celebration of annual masses for the soul of the testator in the church of the convent of Santíssima Trindade, where his remains would be buried.

He left all those properties and houses in Lisboa to his brother, Lourenço Afonso, determining that they had to be transmitted to his eldest legitimate son and subsequently passed to his descendants. His brother was asked to give, each year, 100 libras to an unidentified church for the souls of D. Sancha and D. Goutinha, their aunts.

Will (extract) made by Francisco Dias Delgado and his wife Catarina Moreira, in which they have ordered the foundation of an entail and chapel in the convent of Santo António of Ipojuca, devoted to Nossa Senhora da Conceição, with a perpetual pious obligation of two masses celebrated in every week as long as the world lasted. The entail would be composed of a grange that they possessed in Porto de Galinhas, with some fishing sites, houses and also thirty calving cows, that should be perpetually maintained in this quantity. They left detailed instructions for the ornates of the chapel that should have an altarpiece in stone and an image of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, being ornate with the liturgical colors: white, red, purple and green. The administrators would be henceforth obliged to deliver 10.000 réis to the convent in every year in order to sustain the masses and keep the chapel's ornates. To administrate it, they named their son Francisco Dias Delgado during his lifetime and, after his death, the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. If Francisco had no descendants or died before any of the institutors, the administration would be handled to their granddaughter Joana, daughter of their daughter Ana Mendes and António Freire. If she also had no descendants, the administration would be transmitted to their grandson Manuel, son of Maria Barbosa, their daughter. All administrators would be obliged to live in Pernambuco's captaincy or otherwise lose the administration of the entail. They have also appealed to the authorities the Crown and the Church to surveil the fulfillment of the conditions imposed on this will.

Will (extract) of Ascêncio Gonçalves, priest of Ribeira Seca, bequeathing a vineyard and houses in Ribeira Grande to Maria Gonçalves, wife of António Gonçalves, for her good services. She was due to order the celebration of masses, four for the testator's soul, two for his father's soul and two for her mother's soul. The administrator should give account of the administration by easter.

Exemplification of an extract of the will of Diogo de Aragão Pereira ordering the foundation of two chapels in the capitania of Baía, each with a weekly mass obligation, for which he entails a farm near his sugar-mill named Engenho de Cima. Will (extract) of Gonçalo Dantas, parish priest in Santo André de Gondomar. The testator bequeaths several properties he owned that were to be incorporated into a chapel. The chapel had the perpetual obligation of celebrating a weekly mass every Monday for the benefit of the founder and his descendants. The first administrator would be his brother, Simão Dantas, followed by his descendants, with the exception of illegitimate children. The chaplain would preferably be a relative of the institutor, especially the poorest and least busy cleric of his lineage. Furthermore, Simão Dantas was obliged to register the documents in the "livro dos registos das capelas" in Braga, in order to preserve the information about the property and the pious duties.

Will (extract) of António de Morais. The testator decides to reserve all his real estate and movable property, incorporating them into a chapel, which would be entailed in perpetuity in a "capela" or "morgado". The entail was accompanied by the obligation to celebrate perpetual masses, namely a weekly mass every Friday in honour of the Five Wounds of Christ. The first holder of the entail would be Paula, a young and single girl, the daughter of Leonor de Morais. The entail would be used as a dowry for her marriage, provided she married according to her mother's wishes. The entail would go primarily to the first-born sons, with the exception of the administrators who married Jews, Moors or artisans. The administrators were obliged to live in Barcelos or on its outskirts, unless their service to the King or the Duke of Bragança took them elsewhere.

The administrators were obliged to use the family name and had to report to the Juízo dos Resíduos every three years on the correct celebration of the prescribed masses.

Will (extract) by which Maria Forjaz, Rui Mendes de Brito's wife, bequeaths the third part of her assets, including lands (herdade) in the outskirts of Évora Monte, to her mother, Grimaneza Forjaz, with the obligation of celebrating masses for her soul in the church of the convent of S. If Cristóvão had no heirs, the administration would be handled to his younger brothers, and if none of them had children, the entail would be administrated by the son of Simão Pereira Barbosa and Maria do Rego. If none of these alternative lines of succession produced male heirs, only then the administration would be given to the female heirs of Manuel da Mota Silveira and Catarina de Barros. The administrator would be obliged to give a wage worth 50.000 réis to the chaplain of Nossa Senhora da Boa Vista.

Will (extract) by which André Fernandes de Serpa establishes an entail with his assets in the island of S. Tomé. He bequeaths it to his wife, Ana Gago, daughter of Manuel Fernandes Gago and Maria Rodrigues, with the obligation of two weekly masses in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa, under the condition that his wife shall marry again under a year. If this requirement is not met, the entail shall be left to the institutor's siblings.

After the death of Rafael de Abreu, they were to be administered by António, their son, if he became a cleric. After the latter's death, it was to be administered by any grandson of Guiomar Pacheco, his sister, who was a cleric. If none were clerics, the administrator would be André de Vasconcelos, her nephew. In that case, on the succession should continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir.

Will (extract) by which Francisco Dias de Amaral, fidalgo da Casa do Rei e do seu Conselho, and his wife, Filipa de Carvalho, establish a chapel of seven annual masses in the chapel of Chagas of the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa, where they wish to be buried. They entail to it their casal and properties in Pereiro, Alenquer. If Jorge de Barros has already died at the time of his father's death, the entail shall be inherited by his younger brother, João de Barros. If João de Barros has also already died, it shall go to their cousin, Francisco de Barros. He asks that his wife and executors add to his third part his casal in Loures, his houses in Rua Nova, Lisboa, a public debt instrument of 100 000 reis or his farmstead in quinta da Fonte da Telha, whichever is better. He also orders that his son, when he becomes an adult, add his legitime to the entail, together with the third part of his third.

Will (extract) by which Violante de Castro appoints her niece, Jerónima de Castro, as her universal heir, with the obligation of ordering a weekly mass for her soul in the convent of S. Francisco de Xabregas, where she wishes to be buried, and a Requiem mass in the church of Santo Espírito of Bucelas. If Jerónima de Castro dies without heirs, the entail shall pass to her brother, Tristão Vaz de Castro, and to his descendants, or to her sister, Leonor de Castro, and her descendants. Part of the properties entailed are leases in Arranhó.

After four years, António Gomes do Alemo shall use the revenue of his entail to buy the part of the engine belonging to António de Torres and annex it to his entail. António de Torres shall buy properties to entail in its place with the revenue from this sale. If both their lineages are extinguished, the sucession shall be by appointment.

Will (extract) by which Leonor João establishes an entail with the third part of her assets, including a rent (foro) of wheat in Abitureiras, Santarém, and a vineyard in Arruda. Francisca da Silveira, entail their third parts and their farmstead of Vale de Florete with the obligation of a daily mass for their souls in the chapel founded by Gaspar's father, Estêvão de Brito Freire, in the convent of Nossa Senhora de Jesus of Lisboa. They bequeath it to their eldest daughter, D. Violante, and to her successors. They also order the keeping of 120 000 réis of interest, which shall be given to their other daughter, D. Beatriz, for her marriage. Another entail can be established for her with this interest, if their son, Luís de Brito, wishes to also give money to her. It shall have the obligation of two annual masses in their chapel. If D. Beatriz doesn't have heirs, her entail can be annexed to the one given to her sister. If D. Violante's lineage is extinguished, her entail shall pass to the administrator of the entail of Estêvão de Brito Freire.

Will (extract) by which Brás da Silva de Azevedo and his wife Isabel Dantas declared that they wanted to use their thirds in order to establish an entail. The institutors designated their son João Pereira and his heirs to be its administrators but, if he died childless, it should succeed his grandson António, son of their son António da Silva. The administrator was due to order the celebration of ten masses in the Church of São Tomé, where they wanted to be buried. The institutors also left some legacies to their servant Ana Vieira in order to get married. This entail is composed of lands on the outskirts of Montemor.

Will (extract) by which Padre Álvaro Monteiro bequeaths houses located on Praça dos Canos, Lisboa, to his son, Gaspar Afonso, determining that him and his descendants must support the celebration of 3 annual masses for his soul in the church of S. Julião of that city. After Gaspar Afonso's death, the entail would be transmitted to his eldest son or, if he dies childless, to whoever he chooses.

Will (extract) by which António de Miranda Campelo and his wife D. Maria dos Reis established an entail, designating their son Alberto de Miranda Campelo to be its first administrator. If he died without heirs, it should succeed D. Maria dos Reis and after her death their daughter D. Catarina and her heirs. The successors were due to order the celebration of masses wherever they wanted and to give to their daughter Ângela do Sacramento, a nun, 40 000 réis each year. This entail is composed of a farm called "Saúde" located in Sacavém.

Will (extract) by which Margarida Farto ordered the executor of her will to use a portion of the third part of her assets to buy a property. Its revenues would permanently support the celebration of 3 annual masses for her soul and the souls of her parents and relatives in the church of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires of Lisboa. She designated her husband, Gaspar Vaz, to become the chapel's first administrator, obligating him to fulfil those pious obligations. At the time of his death, the entailed property had to be transmitted to a son or daughter of his choice. If any of the institutor's descendants died before appointing a successor, the entail would be transmitted to the eldest son of the last administrator.

Will (extract) by which Pedro Nunes, desembargador, and his wife establish an entail with their third parts, including a farmstead in Numães, Barcelos, with an obligation of three weekly masses for their souls in a church chosen by the one of them who survives. They designate their eldest son, Simão Nunes de Carvalho, as administrator of the entail, and his descendants afterwards. If he dies without succession, the entail will pass to his brother, Miguel Nunes de Carvalho, and his descendants, or to their sister, Maria Nunes de Carvalho.

Will (extract) by which Manuel Fernandes bequeathed houses in Rua da Galé, Lisboa, to his wife, Isabel Lourenço, obligating her and her successors to support the celebration of 10 annual masses for his soul in the church of S. He and his descendants were obligated to support the celebration of annual masses for her soul and for the souls of her relatives in the church of Santa Maria Madalena of Lisboa.

Will (extract) by which Cosme Feio, Fernando Feio and Isabel Dias' son, bequeaths the third part of his assets, including lands (casal) in Galés, Mafra, to his daughter, Isabel, obligating her and her descendants to celebrate a mass, each year, on the day of Santa Eulália in the hermitage of Santa Eulália for the souls of his parents. Those properties could never be sold or exchanged for others. The entail must be inherited by the eldest son of Isabel or, if she does not have any children, by the closest male relative of the institutor.

Will (extract) by which Inês de Valadares established an entail, designating her granddaughter Inês to be its first administrator. If she died without children, it should succeed another grandson of hers, Luís. The administrator was due to order the celebration of masses wherever she wanted and to use the money at interest in the Colégio of Santo Antão de Lisboa, to buy some immovable goods and to be incorporated into the chapel.

Will (extract) by which Pedro Alves entails a casal in Cascais with an obligation of several annual masses in the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, where he wishes to be buried. He designates his daughter, Francisca Antunes, as first administrator of his entail, and her descendants afterwards.

Will (extract) by which Valentim de Barona entails his houses in Lisboa with an obligation of 50 annual masses for his soul and the soul of his wife, Maria da Costa, in the church of the monastery of Nossa Senhora do Carmo. He designates his daughter, Maria de Barona, married to Francisco Vales, as first administrator of his entail, and her descendants afterwards. If she doesn't have any, the entail shall pass to her sister, Leonor de Barona, married to Jacques Verjões, and to her successors. He donates other properties to his granddaughter, also called Maria de Barona, nun in the monastery of Odivelas, which must be annexed to his entail after her death.

Will (extract) in which Catarina Gil and Jorge Lopes establish pious charges for their souls and for other family members in the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo de Lisboa. They refer to the masses they were already fulfilling for the souls of Afonso Eanes "Cazambuco", João Gil and Beatriz Pires, who were Catarina Gil’s great-grandfather, father and mother respectively. The couple entails the pious obligations to three orchards they had in Várzea, referring that part of those orchards were already obligated to the pious charges instituted by Catarina’s mother Beatriz Pires, in her will. After the testators’ death, these properties would be bequeathed to their daughter Juliana Landim, with the pious obligations. They establish in detail the conditions and the pious charges the administrators of this property should have and they detail the options of succession. After Juliana Landim, their goddaughter Juliana Raposo, Brás Raposo’s daughter or a relative of Catarina’s father João Gil should succeed, passing the administration preferably to the older sons.

Will (extract) by André Fernandes Godinho, establishing a chapel and entailing half of the Godinhos' farm (herdade), on the outskirts of Aljustrel, to fulfill the charges, celebrated in the mother church of Aljustrel. Will (extract) by which Fernando Gonçalves Fuseiro estalished an entail, designating his sister Guiomar Ferreira to be its first administrator. She was due to order the celebration of masses in the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, giving 100 "alqueires de trigo" and using the rents of his "herdade" in Machede, on the outskirts of Évora. This entail should be succeeded by her eldest son or, in his absence, by a daughter.

Will (extract) by which Vasco Esteves, prior da igreja de Algodres, bequeaths his farmstead (quinta) of Figueira and mills (azenhas) in Coruche to Vicente Esteves, his brother, with the obligation of giving barrels of red wine and wheat to the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa, each year. Its friars should celebrate annual masses in exchange for that donation. The testator's remains should be buried inside that convent.

Will (extract) by which Manuel da Silva established an entail, designating his son D. António da Silva to be its first administrator with the obligation to incorporate his "legítima" into this entail. It should succeed his heirs and, if he died childless, his brother Nicolau da Silva and his heirs. The successors were also obligated to incorporate their thirds into this entail.

Will (extract) by which padre Baltasar Soares Magro entails a casal in Calhariz de Benfica, Lisboa, with an obligation of 150 masses for his soul in the convent of S. Bento de Xabregas. He designates his great-nephew, Sebastião Ferreira Magro, son of his nephew Manuel Ferreira Magro, as first administrator, and his descendants afterwards.

Extract of the will made by Gomes Pamplona de Miranda in which he ordered the foundation of an entail, composed of assets in Terceira island, with a perpetual obligation of one mass celebrated every week for his soul and 12 more masses celebrated every year for the soul of his father António Pamplona de Miranda. He named his wife as first administrator of the entail with the condition that if she married a second time the administration should be given to their son João de Ornelas, who would in anyway inherit after her death, and his first born male sons after him. If João de Ornelas died without heirs, the administration should be transmitted to the closest relative of his mother's or aunts or cousins bloodline, and if there were relatives in equivalent condition to receive the administration, he decided that the poorest should administrate the entail. He disposed that every administrator should bare the surname "Borges" or lose the administration, and also give 10 alqueires of wheat to two poor woman, with the condition that each of them would pray a rosary in memory of his soul.

Will (extract) of Catarina Vaz. She leaves half of a farm to Maria Lourenço Gramacha and the other half to Rui Pegado, her nephews, with charge of masses. Each one could choose the son he wanted to succeed him, but later the succession would take place in the eldest son.

Will (extract) by Diogo Lourenço, copied from the tombo of the chapels of the mother church of Panóias. He leaves a third of his property, consisting of a few courelas, to Maria Barbas, his wife, with the obligation to keep a lamp burning in the church of São João, in Panóias. After the death of his wife, it would remain with Bárbara Lourenço, their daughter, and then with her eldest son.

Will (extract) of Gonçalo de Pina. He leaves his garden in Vale dos Mestres and an olive grove next to it, and other rural assets, to Francisco de Pina, his son. He entails the olive grove to fulfill charges.
