Will of Cecília Francisco. She orders her body to be buried in the church of Santiago da Cividade, in front of the altar of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, where her parents and siblings were interred. As a single woman with no forced heirs, she was free to dispose of her possessions. Her intention was to entail her estates in Braga and its outskirts in a chapel. The chapel had the perpetual obligation of celebrating 53 masses a year, 47 in the church of Santiago da Cividade and six in the altar of São Pedro in Braga Cathedral. The first administrator of the entail was to be her nephew, Francisco da Costa, who was to be succeeded by his next of kin. Cecília's will was to be recorded in the "Livro das Capelas" of the Juízo dos Resíduos and in the "Tábua" of the Church of Santiago.

Will of Francisco Eanes instituting a chapel and appointing his nephew Francisco Fernandes as administrator, granting him the power to appoint his successor. The next administrator should be chosen amongst the institutor's kin, and preference should be given to clerics over laymen.

Followed by the approval deed (1618-03-20, fls. 77-78).

Will of Catarina Fernandes, daughter of Father Nicolau Fernandes. The testator asks to be buried in the cloister of Braga Cathedral, next to her brother Pedro Fernandes. In her will, Catarina declares that she wishes to establish a chapel and entails her possessions in perpetuity. She also imposes the obligation of celebrating a weekly mass at the altar of S. Geraldo or S. António, in Braga Cathedral, for her soul and for the souls of her parents, brother and other people she was close to. Catarina established the Casal of Vezemal, in S. Martinho, Braga, as the head of the chapel, including the lands she had inherited from his father and brother. She appointed her nephew Francisco Fernandes and his descendants as administrators, or another nephew, Marcos Veloso, on the condition that he couldn't marry Domingas da Costa. The entail would be inherited mainly by first-born sons, excluding illegitimate children and those who had committed lese-majeste crimes.

Will of Francisco Rodrigues, ordering that he should be buried in the church of São Mamede of Gondoriz, in the chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios that he had previously instituted. Francisco Rodrigues donated several properties to the chapel and appointed Pedro Fernandes as its first administrator, to be succeeded by Francisco's nephew, João Francisco, and his descendants, with preference given to first-born sons.

Will of Amadeu Fernandes and Maria Afonso, instituting a chapel with 8 annual masses, whose administrator should be their closest relative.

Will by which Mestre Pedro, cónego da Guarda e do Porto, reitor da igreja de Santiago de Óbidos, left all his assets to his brother, Lourenço Pedro, with the obligation of sustaining a chaplain, who would celebrate a daily perpetual mass for his soul in the church of S. Lourenço of Lisboa, and providing for 3 boys of his family, giving them food, clothes and education for 8 years. After 16 years, the entail had to be inherited by Lourenço Pedro's eldest legitimate son.

Will of Gonçalo Eanes, instituting an entail with pious obligations in the church of de São Salvador of Valdreu, where he should also be buried, and appointing as administrator Salvador Gonçalves, if he returns from India, or alternatively his nephew Fernando Diu.

Will of João Álvares de Real instituting an entail with pious deeds in the church of Santa Maria de Moure, and appointing his nieces Isabel Pires and Catarina Pires, and their offspring, as administrators.

Will of Constança Pires, wife of João Sancho, founding a chapel in the church of Santa Maria da Alcáçova, in Montemor-o-Velho, in which a chaplain will sing for her soul and the soul of Afonso Martins, father of João Afonso, her "criado". After the death of her executors, Afonso Martins and Maria Pires, her sister, will succeed in the chapel's administration her closest relative.

Will of Gonçalo Rodrigues da Azambuja and Maria Gonçalves, his wife, founding a chapel and appointing one another as executor.

Will by which Graça Forjaz, mother of D. Pedro, Conde de Barcelos, expresses her wish to be buried in the cathedral of Lisboa, near the chapel of Santa Catarina. She orders the construction of her chapel in that cathedral, to which she entails her houses in Lisboa. Its future administrators are obligated to pay 52 libras each year to the cabido da Sé, with the purpose of supporting the celebration of annual masses and the organization of a festivity on the day of S. Gervásio. She demands that those masses shall be prayed by two chaplains of her family and appoints for one of these positions Martinho Esteves, her chaplain. Her nephew, Estêvão Eanes Forjaz, cónego da Sé, must assure during his lifetime that the institutor's obligations are duly fulfiled. The testator declares that the administration of her chapel shall always be in her family and that her executors must choose its first administrator.

Will by which Rodrigo Afonso, clérigo de missa e prior em Barbacena, expresses his wish to be buried in the church of that town if he dies there. He bequeaths an olive grove in Vale do Salgado to his niece, Maria Mexia, and to her successors, with the obligation of ordering five annual masses for his soul in the church of Santa Maria of Olivença. If she doesn't have successors it shall pass to her brother Lourenço Mexia. If none of them have children, the entail shall pass to another of Rodrigo's nephews, Garcia Rodrigues. If Garcia Rodrigues becomes a priest, it will pass, after his death, to the Misericórdia of Olivença.
He bequeaths Lourenço Mexia three pieces of land with an obligation of five other masses in the same church of Olivença, for his and his parents' souls, to be inherited by his successors. If Lourenço doesn't have children, he requests him to annex these lands to to the ones he already possesses and to make a chapel with an obligation of ten masses for his own and his wife's souls, and pass it to one of his siblings or to the Misericórdia of Olivença.
He bequeaths his other nephew, João Mexia, two farmlands in the farmstead of Antão Gomes, with the obligation of four annual masses for his soul in Santa Maria of Olivença, to pass to his descendants, or to his brother, Lourenço Mexia, if he has no children, under the same conditions as the other two entails.

Will of Graça Martins, instituting a chapel and appointing her niece Ana as administrator, with pious obligations in the hermitage of Santa Justa, where the institutor should be buried.

Will of Gonçalo Pires, instituting a chapel in the church of Santiago de Sequeade, appointing Pedro Dias as the first administrator. After his death, the administrator should be João Gonçalves and his offspring.

Will of João Vaz Nunes, establishing Nossa Senhora da Esperança, to whom he had built a chapel, in Ladário, as his heiress, to which he entails all his assets, to fulfill the charges. He orders his grave in this chapel and appoints Manuel Nunes de Carvalho, his nephew, heir and administrator of the chapel.

Will made by Madalena dos Reis Coelho, wife of licenciado Francisco Reixa da Costa, in which expresses her wish to be buried in the cathedral of Portalegre. She appoints her son Pedro to succeed her on the administration of the chapel founded by Manuel Rodrigues Pinhão, whose succession was chosen by appointment. She establishes an entail for her daughter, Faustina Maria, composed of her houses and an olive grove in Portalegre, with a perpetual obligation of ten annual masses. She would be succeded by her descendants or, if she had none, the administration would be handed to her sister Antónia and to her descendants.

Will made in Nisa by Joana Vaz, in which she ordered her burial in the church of Santa Maria de Nisa and the foundation of an entail with a perpetual pious obligation of ten masses celebrated every year. She named her brother Diogo Vaz as first administrator during his lifetime, and, after his death, he would be succeeded by his eldest male heir, with the condition that instead of ten masses he would order the celebration of twelve masses every year, and from there on the administrators would celebrate not only twelve, but fifteen masses every year.

Will made by padre Fernando Rodrigues Nogueira, in which he ordered the foundation of an entail with a perpetual obligation of one daily mass celebrated in the mother church of Portalegre. The institutor named Mateus Veles, eldest son of Mateus Lourenço, as first administrator during his lifetime and, after his death, the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. He also mentioned that his cousin Catarina Nogueira had ordered the foundation of a chapel on her will and because there was no appointed successor for it, he thereby annexed and incorporated the chapel on the entail he ordered to be founded on this will, with the intention that it should be always administrated by the same administrator. The institutor disposed that the Provisor sould take account on the chapel's administration every year and, for this work, the administrator should gift him a sheep.

Will made by padre Diogo Leitão in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of a chapel with a perpetual pious obligation of forty masses celebrated every year in Castelo de Vide. He appointed Diogo Leitão, son of João Franco, to be the first administrator during his lifetime and, after his death, he shall be succeeded by his eldest son, whether male or female.

Will by which Leonor Gil, Nuno Fernandes' widow, establishes an entail with her lands (casal) in Corveira, in the outskirts of Sintra. She appoints her nephew, Gil Rodrigues, bacharel, to be its first administrator, with the obligation of celebrating annual masses for her soul and lighting a torch every holy thursday, in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. She orders her heir to buy a property worth 140 000 réis, which should be incorporated in her entail. She asks to be buried in that church, inside the grave where lied her husband.

Will by which João de Atouguia bequeaths houses in Lisboa to Agostinho Gonçalves, boticário, obligating him to give, each year, 50 réis brancos to the convent of S. Domingos of that city, with the purpose of supporting the celebration of annual masses for his soul.
The testator establishes another entail, instituting the pious obligation of celebrating annual masses in the church of that convent, where his remains should be buried. He appoints Gonçalo Eanes, correeiro, to be its first administrator, who should bequeath it to his eldest son. If Gonçalo had no descendants, he was allowed to appoint a layman, who must have his profession, to administer the chapel.

Will by which Gaspar Gil Severim expresses his wish to be buried in the chapterhouse of the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa and establishes two entails, which he bequeaths to his two sons, Francisco de Faria Severim, and Manuel de Faria Severim.
He gives to his son Francisco, among other properties, the farm and houses in Lisboa which he had received through a dowry deed from Catarina Mateus Galvão, aunt of his first wife, Antónia de Faria, and which were entailed to an obligation of masses, which should pass to his eldest son.
If the lineage of any of his sons is extinguished, their respective entail shall be inherited by the other or by their successors.

Will of Miguel da Nave and Beatriz de Pina, his wife, who is sick, founding a chapel with 15 masses in the church of Santiago of Covilhã and another 15 masses in a church of Miguel da Nave's choice. Beatriz de Pina appoints her husband as her heir and the first chapel's administrator.
Will approved in 1583-10-19 and opened in 1584 (or 1583)-12-28.

Will of Jerónimo de Albuquerque refering the foundation of an entail in Pernambuco and revoking part of a previous will made with his wife, D. Filipa de Melo.

Will by which D. Antónia Henriques expresses her wish to be buried in the Chapel of Reis of the monastery of Santíssima Trindade, in Lisboa, which had been established by herself, by her husband, Gaspar de Sampaio and by her father-in-law, Lopo Vaz de Sampaio. She entails a public debt instrument and properties in Elvas, Arraiolos and Évora to an obligation of two daily masses in that chapel, and of keeping nine merceeiras. She also orders masses to be prayed in the churches of S. Francisco de Évora and of S. Francisco de Elvas, for the souls of her parents and sister. She appoints Mestre Afonso Guerreiro and Francisco de Freitas as administrators of her chapel, with the faculty of appointing the next administrator.

Will of Vasco Pires, escudeiro of Antanhol, founding two chapels of 40 libras in the monastery of São Jorge of Coimbra.

Will by which Álvaro de Barros, Cavaleiro da Casa do Rei e da Ordem de Santiago, bequeaths the third part of his assets, including a farmstead (quinta) in Charneca, outskirts of Lisboa, to his son-in-law, Fernando Lourenço, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei e feitor dos Tratos da Guiné, obligating him and his descendants to support the celebration of a daily mass only during a year and a perpetual mass for his soul, on the day of São Martinho, in the altar of Santa Maria of the church of Santa Maria Madalena of that city. His wife, Beatriz Nunes, is buried inside that church.

Will made by João Eanes Palhavã and Sancha Pires, his wife. They wish to be buried in the chapel established by Martinho Pires de Palhavã and D. Maria Soares, in the monastery of S. Domingos de Lisboa, they leave all their real estate, located in Setúbal and Palmela, in addition to others in Santarém, to the monastery, which must celebrate the prescribed charges. The entailed assets must be administered by your firstborn child.

Will by which Bárbara André wanted to be buried in the church of São Francisco of Montemor-o-Novo, in the grave of her husband Bartolomeu Fernandes. She founded a chapel, incorporating all her immovable property to fulfill the pious charges in that convent. She designated her compadre André Álvares to be her last will executor and the first administrator of this entail. The administrator was responsible for appointing the successor.

Will of Estêvão Domingues and Teresa Afonso, his wife, entailing certain assets to fulfill the charges, in the chapel of Santa Ana, which they had already established, in the church of Santa Maria de Almacave, in Lamego, where they wish to be buried. They appoint Gonçalo Domingues, brother of the founder, as the first administrator and, after his death, his heirs.

Will (extract) by which the priest João Rodrigues incorporated assets for the fulfillment of the pious charges in the Convent of São Domingos de Elvas and in the Church of Santa Maria dos Açougues de Elvas. He designated his criado Vasco Pires to be its administrator during his lifetime, succeeding his cousin Luís Gonçalves Botafogo and then his eldest son. This entail is composed of the "herdade do Freixo" and olive groves in Zaval and Serra de S. Domingos.

Will of the priest Gil Eanes Pereira by which he established a chapel of invocation of Santa Ana, in Elvas. He incorporated some assets for the fulfillment of the charges. The institutor designated António Vieira, son of Manuel Lopes, his cousin, to be its first administrator, if he was ordered a priest. The priest Rodrigo Aires, the administrator's nephew, should succeed him and then his closest relative, who should be a cleric.

Will of Fernando Sardinha and Beatriz Vaz Raposa, his wife, founding two entail and chapels, with masses in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, in the church of S. Julião of Setúbal, each one of them founded with half of their assets. Fernando Sardinha appoints as successor of his entail, after his and his wife's death, Estêvão Sardinha, his brother, and Beatriz Vaz Raposo appoints as successor of her entail, after her and her husband's death, D. Maria, the daughter of her niece. The couple consents in both entail foundations.

Will by which D. Justa de Azevedo, António da Cunha e Silva's widow, establishes an entail with the third part of her assets, including a public debt instrument of 100 000 réis and 2 000 cruzados, which should be employed in the acquisition of properties or houses in Lisboa. She appoints her granddaughter, D. Antónia da Cunha e Meneses, D. Manuel Pereira Coutinho's wife, to be its first administrator, instituting the obligation of celebrating annual masses for her soul in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. She chooses to be buried in that convent, next to her husband.

Will of Diogo Vaz and Catarina Tristão, his wife. They founded a chapel, located in the church of Santa Maria of Torres Vedras, entailing various assets to fulfill their charges. They appoint Diogo de Brito and Catarina Dias, daughter of Isabel Lopes, heirs and first administrators.

Will by which the Inquisidor Jorge Ferreira, resident in Goa, designated his mother to be his universal heiress, leaving her all his free assets. He determined that, after his death, 8 000 cruzados had to be shipped to Lisboa, given to Manuel Silveira Frade, his uncle, and employed in the acquisition of properties in Abrantes to be incorporated in an entail. Its future administrators would be obligated to support the celebration of a daily perpetual mass for his soul in the chapel of Jesus of the church of S. Vicente of Abrantes. If his mother was still alive at the time of his death, the entail would be administrated by her and subsequently passed to his nephew, who had to use his name. From then on, the entail would be administrated by the eldest son of the previous administrator.
He left mills in Rio de Moinhos to his niece, Maria Ferreira, Álvaro Frade's eldest daughter, with the obligation of celebrating 20 masses every year. Since he did not recall what were the conditions stated in the donation deed made by his mother, who had inherited the mills from her brother, Álvaro Frade Caldeira, he determined that the mills would be left to her if she was alive.
Jorge Ferreira appointed Álvaro Frade Ferreira, his brother, to administrate the entail founded by his grandmother, which he had inherited after Simão Ferreira's death, with the obligation of celebrating 2 annual masses every year. He also designated his brother to administrate the chapel established by Vasco Fernandes Ferreira in the church of S. João de Abrantes, to which Vicente Palos da Guarda had entailed properties and added pious obligations.
If the testator died in Goa, his body would be buried in the Casa da Nossa Senhora da Serra. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1611-04-25, an opening deed issued on 1613-09-30 and a codicil issued on 1613-01-20.

Will by which Rui Figueira, Cavaleiro, and his wife, Beatriz Tavares, establish a chapel in the church of Santa Justa of Lisboa, entailing to it the third part of their assets, lands (casais) in Manique, Cascais, and in Colares, Sintra. They appoint Gonçalo Figueira, their son, to be its first administrator, obligating him and his descendants to support the celebration of annual masses for the souls of the institutors. They declare that their bodies must be buried inside their chapel, where it should be placed an altarpiece depicting its patron saint, S. Cristóvão, but also Santa Ana, Santa Maria and Jesus Cristo. If the chapel is not finished at the time of death of one of the couple's members, the other one has the obligation to end its construction.

Will by which Isabel de Melo establishes a chapel in the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa, entailing to it her farmstead (quinta), the Moinho do Botelho, a public debt instrument of 9 600 réis in Almoxarifado de Santarém, and a public debt instrument of 8 000 réis in Casa da Mercearia de Lisboa. She appoints her cousin, Diogo de Melo de Castelo Branco, to be the first administrator of her entail, ordering him to support the celebration of a daily mass for her soul. She chooses to be buried in the church of the referred convent, in her grandfather's chapel, Amador Vaz de Sampaio. She asks the executors of her will to restore that chapel and to place in it an altarpiece with the image of the holy spirit. Her parents' mortal remains, which lied in the convent of S. Francisco of Xabregas, should be transferred and interred alongside those of her daughter. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1514-07-08 and an opening deed issued on 1514-07-19.

Will made by João Missel, o Gigante, in which he ordered the foundation of a chapel devoted to Santo António with a perpetual pious obligation of one mass celebrated in every month, for which he entailed one cotton field, a land and twenty couples of amerindians, that should be freed and doctrinated on this very chapel, working for the maintenance of the masses and administrators. To administrate it, he named his daughter Virgínia Missel and her husband António Pereira de Azevedo and their descendants. The institutor also disposed that the local clergy and ecclesial visitadores should inspect the chapel and observe if the amerindians were being doctrinated and kept in the numbers that he disposed.

Will of Brásia Varela, by which she orders her grave in the church of the monastery of São Domingos of Évora, where rests Brásia Fernandes, her grandmother. She establishes another chapel, by entailing three vineyards, located on the outskirts of Évora, for the fulfillment of pious charges celebrated in the Capela das Virgens in the monastery of São Domingos de Évora, to be administrated by Beatriz Nunes, her niece, followed by her eldest son or daughter.
In addition, she establishes a chapel, by entailing the income of other farms and other assets located in Évora and surroundings, for the fulfillment of charges celebrated in the Capela das Virgens, in the monastery of São Domingos de Évora, to be administrated by Brásia, daughter of Beatriz Nunes, her niece, followed by her eldest son or daughter.
She establishes another chapel, by entailing a moio and three alqueires of income from the Romeira's farm (herdade) to fulfill the pious charges celebrated in the Capela das Virgens, in that monastery, to be administrated by Isabel, daughter of Beatriz Nunes, her niece, followed by her eldest son or daughter.

Will made by Beatriz Garcia Mendes, in which she ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual mass obligation of one daily mass celebrated in the chapel of N. Sra. do Rosário, in the mother church of Alter do Chão. She named her nephew padre Cristóvão da Silva as first administrator, during his lifetime, and her nephew Vasco Garcia Leitão after his death. Vasco would be succeeded by her nephew João Nunes do Carvalhal and his descendants after him. If her bloodline was extinguished, then the administration would be given to the Misericórdia of Alter do Chão, and if they could not inherit it, then the poor people assisted by the Misericórdia would have it, because she made clear that no King or Governor could ever succeed on the administration in case that it became vacant. She also freed an enslaved woman named Maria and named her administrator of an entailed forrageal that had a perpetual mass obligation of four masses celebrated every year. After the death of Maria, the administration should be given to the same administrator of the entail and chapel that she founded.

Will of Cristóvão Mendes de Vasconcelos, canon in the Cathedral of Braga. The testator requests that his body be buried in the Cathedral, in the place reserved for canons. He decided to establish an entail, including in this "morgado" the farmstead of Briteiros, which he had previously bought from Jorge do Vale Vieira, and other 5,000 cruzados, which were to be used to acquire other lands. The first owner of the entail would be his nephew Cristóvão Vieira, or alternatively Baltasar Vieira. Succession would be by blood, with preference given to first-born sons, excluding illegitimate children. Administrators were obliged to use the family name of Vieira. They were also obliged to establish a chapel in the church of São Salvador de Briteiros or in the convent of São Francisco de Guimarães, if the testator had not done so during his lifetime. In this chapel, the mortal remains of his parents, grandparents and future administrators of the entail should be interred.

Will of Ana Marques entailing her properties with the pious obligation of 59 perpetual masses, celebrated in her chapel of Nossa Senhora das Preces, in Sandomil. The testator appoints as her first successor Simão Aparício, her husband, and, after his death, Sebastião Garcia, her brother, and, after him, his eldest son.
Will approved in 1653-04-16.

Will of Manuel Duarte Pinto bequeathing the remaining assets of his available portion to his son, Manuel Pinto, and founding a chapel or entail in S. Romão. If he does not build the chapel in his lifetime, the second owner of the entail should build it within two years and he orders to put an inscription in stone in the chapel.
Will approved in 1670-05-16.

Will of João Garcia and Maria Álvares, his wife, founding a chapel or entail in Tourais. If Maria Álvares does not appoint any successor, the chapel's assets will be bequeathed to his niece, Catarina, daughter of his sister Catarina Garcia. João Garcia also bequeaths the assets located across the river of Seia to his niece Isabel, daughter of his sister Catarina Garcia, with the pious obligation of four perpetual masses. Isabel can appoint whoever she wants as long as he or she belongs to the institutor lineage.
Will approved in 1667-07-08.

Will of Marcos Fernandes, mentioning that he and his wife had built and instituted a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, with the obligation of a weekly mass, to which they have entailed cereal rents. The couple appointed as first administrator their nephew and priest João Gonçalves. After his death, he should be succedded by the couple's son-in-law Pedro Fernandes Carneiro and his offspring. Nevertheless, the administrator should be exercised rotationally between Pedro Fernandes Carneiro's offspring and the person who lived in the house of the institutors. The chaplain should preferably be a relative of the institutors.

Will of Pedro Pais and his wife Maria Brava. The couple requested to be buried in the Chapel of the Santíssimo Sacramento in the Cathedral of Braga. They named each other as their universal heirs. With the aim of establishing an entail, they reserved properties in Braga, which were to be owned first by their nephew Martinho Bravo, whom they had raised "as their own son". He was to be succeeded by his son Diogo Bravo or by Manuel Bravo. If both died without descendants, someone from the Bravo family would have to be appointed administrator. Clerics were excluded from this role. The administrator had to ensure that two masses were celebrated each week and had to use the surnames Bravo and Pais. A copy of the testament had to be inserted in the records of the Juízo dos Resíduos de Braga, in order to preserve the memory of the pious obligations of the administrators.

Followed by the approval deed (1556-08-06, fls. 119-119v) and the opening deed (1559-12-02, fls. 119v-120).

Will made by padre Manuel Dias da Gesteira, in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of a chapel with a perpetual pious obligation of ten masses celebrated every year. The institutor named his wife Margarida Vaz as first administrator during her lifetime and, after her death, she would be succeeded by Francisco Fernandes and Maria Dias and from there on the succession should continue on her descendants, preferably, on the eldest heir, or, if they have none, the administration would be handled to António, nephew of the institutor. The administrator of the chapel should give account of the administration to the priest in charge of mother church of Montalvão.

Will made by Maria de Almeida, in which she expresses her wish to be buried in the chapel of Trindade in the church of S. Tiago of Marvão and establishes three entails. The first entail was composed of her estate do Porto de João de Arelha, it would have a perpetual obligation of 31 annual masses and would be administerd by Maria de Almeida's nephew, padre Lourenço Mouzinho, followed by his brother, Simão Fernandes Mouzinho, and his descendants. The second entail was composed of a vineyard in the place of Légoa, it would have a perpetual obligation of an annual mass and it would be administered by Maria de Almeida's nephew, padre Manuel Mouzinho, who would appoint the next administrator among his sisters. The third entail was composed of the institutor's houses, it would have a perpetual obligation of three annual masses and would be administered by her niece, Maria, and her descendants after her.

Will by which Leonor Fernandes, Roque Martins' widow, expresses her wish to be buried in the main church of Montalvão and establishes a chapel composed of her houses with a perpetual obligation of two annual masses. She named her nephew António Fernandes Conde as first administrator during his lifetime and, after his death, the succession should continue, preferably, on the eldest heir.

Will by which Isabel de Castro, Rodrigo Álvares Pereira's widow, establishes an entail with her farmstead (quinta) of Ameias, in Cruz de Almada, in Lisboa, and lands (casal) near Ribeira de Lopo, in the outskirts of that city. She appoints Maria de Abreu, her relative, to be its first administrator, obligating her and her successors to celebrate masses for her soul in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. After Maria's death, the entail should be inherited by Afonso de Abreu, cavaleiro fidalgo da Casa do rei, her brother. She declares that her mortal remains should be buried in that church, next to the chapel of Jesus.

Will by which João Pires da Fonte, lavrador, bequeaths part of his assets, including houses and an orchard in Unhos to Leonor Eanes, his daughter, and to Francisco Fernandes, escrivão, her husband, obligating them and their descendants to support the celebration of 6 annual masses for his soul in the church of S. Silvestre of Unhos, Loures, where the testator's body would be buried. After the death of both of them, the entail should be transmitted to their eldest son or daughter. Followed by the measurement of the entailed properties.

Will by which Gregório Gameiro Zuzarte and D. Margarida Monteiro, his wife, establish an entail with all of their assets. Each one of them appoints the other to be their universal heir, declaring that D. Manuel de Eça, D. Duarte de Eça and Maria de Oliveira's son, the testators' nephew, should become the entail's first administrator on the condition that he marries Catarina Antónia Pinheiro, Gregório Gameiro Zuzarte's niece. If he refuses to do so, the entail will be inherited by his eldest brother. D. Manuel de Eça and his descendants are obligated to maintain a chaplain who shall celebrate annual masses for the institutor's souls in the church of S. Nicolau of Lisboa.

Will by which Álvaro Soares, arcediago de Barroso, expresses his wish to be buried in the main chapel of the church of the convent of S. Bento of Monção, which he wishes to rebuild with revenue from his properties in Ponte da Barca. He bequeaths his farmstead of Juste, in Monção, to his great-nephew, António de Magalhães de Meneses, son of Alexandre de Magalhães de Meneses and of D. Isabel de Castro, his niece, as an entail. It shall be annexed to the entail established by Álvaro's brother, Cristóvão de Castro, and his wife, Joana Marinho, of which António is also the successor, and will always be in the lineage of its administrators or in the lineage of Álvaro's father, Paio Gomes Pereira. He orders five chaplains to pray daily masses in the chapel of S. João Baptista of the main church of Monção, founded by his brother, and in the convent of S. Bento. If the obligations aren't fulfiled the entail will pass to the Misericórdia de Monção. Alexandre de Magalhães e Meneses shall have the usufruct of the entail during his lifetime, since he is a widower and hasn't remarried.

After their death, they shall be succeeded by their eldest son.

Will by which Catarina Gonçalves, João Fernandes' widow, Mestre de Gramática, bequeaths all her assets to her nephew, João Rodrigues, ourives, obligating him and his successors to pay each year 500 réis to the monastery of S. Vicente de Fora of Lisboa in order to support the celebration of masses for her soul and for the soul of her husband. She declares that her body should be buried inside that monastery, next to the remains of João Fernandes and of their children.

Will by which D. Guiomar de Eça, widow of Lopo Vaz de Sampaio, governador da Índia, expresses her wish to be buried in the Capela dos Reis Magos of the monastery of Santíssima Trindade of Lisboa, which she had established with her husband in a previous contract. She declares that she donated all of her properties as a dowry to her son, Gaspar de Sampaio, when he married D. Antónia Henriques, under the condition that he would employ that money in revenue to establish a chapel with annual masses for their souls in the monastery of Santíssima Trindade. She also appoints Estêvão Madeira, cónego da Se de Lisboa, as visitor of her chapel, giving him a pension in exchange for his supervision over it. After his death, the administrator of the entail shall elect the new visitor. She designates her son as administrator of the chapel, and his children afterwards. If he doesn't have any heirs, he shall appoint the next administrator among their relatives.

Will by which Beatriz Eanes, Estêvão Gonçalves Corvino's widow, established an entail with houses in Lisboa and her farmstead (quinta) in Malapados, designating her nephew, Pedro Eanes, ferrador, to become its first administrator. She obligated him and his successors to support the celebration of 2 annual masses in the church of S. Miguel of Alfama. They were also asked to give shelter and sustenance to poor people in 4 houses that belonged to the institutor. After Pedro Eanes' death, the entail would be inherited by João Gonçalves, Gonçalo Afonso's son. The testator declared that her body had to be buried in that church, where her first husband's remains lied.

Will of Brásia Varela, by which she orders her grave in the church of the monastery of São Domingos of Évora, where rests Brásia Fernandes, her grandmother. She established a chapel, by entailing a moio and three alqueires of income from the Romeira's farm (herdade) to fulfill the pious charges celebrated in the Capela das Virgens, in that monastery, to be administrated by Isabel, daughter of Beatriz Nunes, her niece, followed by her eldest son or daughter.

They appoint the surviving spouse as the entail's first administrator, who should bequeath it to Madalena Pacheco, their daughter. They order their successors to support the celebration of annual masses in the chapel of S. João Baptista, in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa, where their bodies should be buried. They also declare that the heir of their houses in Pedras Negras, Lisboa, shall order an anniversary in the church of S. Mamede, as the owners of these houses were ordered to. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1478-11-05 and an opening deed issued on 1479-11-10.

Will of Gonçalo Gil de Barbosa and Mécia Mendes de Aguiar, founding an entail by the available portion.

Will made by Manuel da Costa in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of a chapel devoted to Jesus Christ with a perpetual mass obligation of a weekly mass celebrated on Sundays and holidays in the hermitage of N. Sra. das Almas. He named his wife Ana Rebelo as first administrator during her lifetime and, after her death, his son Inácio da Costa Rebelo who would always be succeeded, preferably, by the eldest male heir. If Inácio had no descendants, the administration should be given to one of his nephews, sons of Isabel da Costa. If there was none of them alive, the administration should be transmitted to another of his children. He ordered the administrator to continue the construction of a chapel which was not finished by the time of his death, and disposed that instead of giving account to the royal magistrates, the administrator should give account of the administration to a vigário of the church.

Will of Diogo de Palma and Elvira de Salazar, his wife, ordering their grave in the chapel of Madre de Deus, in the church of São Nicolau of Lisboa. They allocate the majority of a third of their assets, after their daughters' marriage dowries have been fulfilled. From a third of the assets, they entail some houses, in Lisboa, on Rua das Mudas, to fulfill the charges celebrated in that chapel and appoint Fernando Dias de Palma, their son and executor, as first administrator. He was to name the next administrator from among his sons and daughters. An exemplification of the will had to be given to the beneficiados of São Nicolau, who would keep the houses in the event of non-fulfillment of the charges.
Diogo de Palma was administrator of the chapel of Fernando Velho, appointing Fernando Dias de Palma, his son and executor, to administer it. If he died childless, he would nominate Beatriz Teixeira, his sister, to succeed him, or his children if she had already died.

Will by which the priest Afonso Franco established an entail, incorporating some assets located in Vimieiro, ir order to fulfil the pious obligations. He designated Manuel Rodrigues Batalha to be his heir and the chapel's first administrator, with the obligation to be ordered a priest. The chapel should be administered by a cleric who would appoint its successor, among other clerics who were sons of mechanical officers and farmers in the village.

Will by which Fernando Lopes establishes an entail, incorporating in it houses in Lisboa and public debt instruments in the Câmara de Lisboa and the Almoxarifado de Tomar. He appoints his brother, Duarte Fernandes, to administrate both the entail and the chapel he had founded in the church of S. Nicolau of that city, leaving him 30 000 cruzados which should be employed in the acquisition of assets to be entailed. After the first administrator's death, it would be inherited by Álvaro Fernandes da Costa, his eldest son. The entail's administrators are obligated to give, each year, 96 000 réis to the inmates of the prisons of Limoeiro, Tronco and Aljube and to support the celebration of annual masses in that chapel. Since the testator is residing in Madrid, he declares that his body should be buried inside his brother's chapel in the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo of Madrid. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1636-09-05.

Will made by António Barradas Montoso, in which he ordered the foundation of an entail, with a perpetual obligation of two trinitaries of masses celebrated every year in the church of Santa Maria Madalena of Monforte, where his body should be buried. He named his nephew Manuel Barradas as first administrator of the entail and his eldest male heirs after him, and if he had no children, the administration would be handled to his brother Pedro Eanes Mures with the same conditions. If Pedro died without heirs, the administration would be handled, in this order, to one of the sons of Maria Curva or Joana Barradas, sisters of the institutor. The will should be registered on the Livro de Tombo of the church of Santa Maria Madalena of Monforte.

Will of Domingos Gomes, cidadão of Coimbra, founding a chapel or entail, with masses in the monastery of Santa Cruz of Coimbra, and appointing Cónego António de Oliveira, his nephew, as his universal heir, executor and first administrator of his chapel or entail. He states that the chapel is of appointment.
Will approved in 1603-11-30 and opened in 1604-09-18.

Will of Inês Vasques, founding a chapel in the monastery of São Domingos do Porto and appointing her nephew João Álvares Ribeiro as administrator.
Followed by an addition dated 1458-12-16.

Will of D. Lourença Pires, ordering her grave in her chapel of São Salvador, in the church of Santa Justa of Coimbra. Together with Francisco Lourenço, her husband, João Eanes, her son-in-law, and Marinha Lourenço, her daughter, she entails several assets to fulfill the chapel's charges. She nominates her husband as first administrator and, after his death, her daughter and son-in-law. The chapel was then to be administered by her grandchildren. If she left her lineage, she would pass to the Confraternity of Santa Maria da Vera Cruz of Coimbra.

Will of Francisco Rodrigues, by which he states that his body should be buried in the chapel of the Anjo Custódio, located in the mother church of Chaves. Francisco left his soul as his heir and established perpetual masses for its benefit. His son, Jacome Rodrigues Carneiro, would be in charge of the chapel, to be followed by his first-born son. The chaplains would preferiebly be clerics coming from the institutor and the administrator's lineage.

Followed by the approval deed (1560-10-14).

Will of Padre João de Sousa bequeathing all his assets to Catarina Borges, his sister, with the pious obligation of 25 perpetual prayed masses, per year, in his chapel of S. Lourenço, located in the church of Vila Nova, in the outskirts of the town of Casal. He appoints Catarina Borges as its first administrator and, after her death, their sister, Mécia Lourenço, and, after her, one of her daughters, specifically the one who fail in the chapel of Margarida Borges. The testator also bequeaths two swamps (lameiros) to Domingos Lopes Ferreira and his wife, Inácia Francisca, with the pious obligation of two annual masses for his soul, also celebrated in his chapel of S. Lourenço, founding another entail, in which should succeed their legitimate offspring. If Domingos Lopes dies without offspring in common with Inácia Francisca or if one of the successors alienates the swamps, these properties will be annexed to the chapel founded to Catarina Borges.

Will of Margarida Borges bequeathing some properties to Catarina Borges, her niece, with the pious obligation of nine perpetual masses, per year, celebrated in the altar where her nephew, João de Sousa, will found his chapel or in the altar of S. Miguel, in Tazem, while his nephew do not found his chapel. After Catarina Borge's death will succeed one of the daughter of Mécia Lourenço, her niece, appointed by Catarina Borges. Margarida Borges also bequeaths her all other assets to Mécia Lourenço, her niece, with the pious obligation of one perpetual mass to S. João.

Will made by Sebastião Mendes Canto, in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail and chapel with a perpetual obligation of sixty masses celebrated every year on the chapel of N. Sra. do Rosário of S. Lourenço's church, in Portalegre, where his body should be buried. His descendants could also be buried in the chapel if they wished so. He named his nephew Francisco, son of his niece Ana Mendes, as first administrator of the entail during his lifetime, and, after his death, the succession would always continue on the eldest male heir. If Francisco became a clergyman or if he died without heirs, the administration should be transmitted to his male brothers, preferably the eldest after him, or his sisters. In the lack of descendants of Ana Mendes, the administration would be handled to the Misericórdia of Portalegre, with the same conditions. All administrators would be obliged to annex up to 20.000 réis of their own reserved portion to the entail. The administrators should give account not to the Provedor das Capelas, but directly to the Prior of S. Lourenço's church. Anyone who committed crimes of lese-majeste would lose the administration of the entail.

Will made in Vale do Peso, Portalegre's district, by padre Manuel Dias Maninho in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail and chapel with a perpetual pious obligation of five masses celebrated every week on the chapel and altar of Almas, where his body should be buried. He named his compadre Salvador Martins as first administrator of the entail during his lifetime, and, after his death, he would be succeeded by Manuel Luís, son-in-law of Salvador, and his descendants after him, or other appointed administrators in case he died without heirs. The administrators should also give 30.000 réis every year to the chaplain's sustenance, providing him a house, choosing him among the local born clergyman, preferably learned in universities and old christians, who would be examined before taking on the administration. He also disposed that the administrators were obliged to provide the dowry and marry an orphan girl every year, chosed among his relatives. Predicting that the entailed patrimony could occasionaly dismantled in times of war, famine or plague, he allowed that the number of masses, the chaplains salary and the orphan girls dowry could be reduced in any of those circumstances.

Will made by Pedro Rodrigues, o coxo, mercador, in which he ordered his burial in the church of S. Martinho of Portalegre. He established an entail composed of a watermill with the obligation of a weekly as long as the world lasted. To administrate it he named his nephew Inácio, son of Simão Rodrigues and Lucrécia Mendes, sister of the institutor, and his descendants after him. If Mécia Fernandes, sister os the institutor wished to entail her own reserved portion to this entail, then the perpetual masses obligation would be increased from one to three masses celebrated every week.

Will through which Ana Luís, Brás Eanes' widow, entailed houses in Lisboa and properties located in the outskirts of Sintra to the entail she administered, following the wish expressed in the will she and her husband had issued on 1553. She added the pious obligation of celebrating two more masses in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. She also demanded that the entail's following administrators should give, each year, 100 réis to the Confraria das almas do purgatório of the church of Santa Justa, whose officers had the obligation of asking the visitador to take the chapel's administration account. After the visitador completed that task, the administrator should give him 300 réis. She appointed Ana Luís, her niece, João Luís' daughter, as the entail's next administrator.
Ana Luís also established another entail, incorporating in it her lands in Carregueira, Loures, with the pious obligation of one mass celebrated, each year, in the church of Santa Maria de Loures. She appointed Maria da Costa, Francisco Lopes and Inês Vicente's daughter, and her late husband's niece, as this entail's first administrator.

Will made in Monforte by which Manuel do Couto expresses his wish to be buried in the church of Nossa Senhora da Graça of Monforte and establishes two entails. The first entail would be composed of an olive grove with an obligation of five annual masses. He named his sister Isabel do Couto, as administrator, during her lifetime, and, after her death, Francisco Rodrigues, almocreve, with an obligation of two more masses, in a total of seven. After Francisco's death the administration would be handed to the granddaughter of Gaspar do Couto Monsaraz with a perpetual mass obligation of only two masses celebrated every year, and from there on the succession should always continue on the closest relative of the institutor's bloodline. The second entail would be composed of a land over which he imposed a perpetual obligation of four annual masses. He named his sister Isabel do Couto as administrator, during her lifetime, and, after her death, the administration would be handed to João do Couto Caldeira during his lifetime and, after his death, the land would be incorporated in the first entail. The Reitor of Santa Maria would take account on the administration every year.

Will by which Gaspar Leitão bequeaths the third part of his assets, including houses in Lisboa, to his son, Lourenço Leitão, with the pious obligation of celebrating masses for his soul in the church of S. Nicolau of that city. He declares that his body should be buried in that church.

Will by which Gaspar Gil Severim expresses his wish to be buried in the chapterhouse of the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa and establishes two entails, which he bequeaths to his two sons, Francisco de Faria Severim, and Manuel de Faria Severim.
He gives to his son Francisco, among other properties, the houses in Lisboa which he had inherited from his parents, António Gil Severim and Catarina Lopes Morim. These houses had an obligation of thirty masses for the soul of António Gil Severim and a divine office and five masses for the soul of Catarina Lopes.
If the lineage of any of his sons is extinguished, their respective entail shall be inherited by the other or by their successors.

Will by which Martinho Pires de Gaia and Maria Fernandes, his wife, declare that after the death of the former, she should inherit all the couple's properties in Alpriate, with the obligation of giving each year 50 libras to the prior of the monastery of S. Vicente de Fora of Lisboa, who would choose someone to celebrate annual masses for their souls in its church. After Maria Fernandes' death, the entail would be inherited by her eldest son.

Will by which Maria da Gama de Abreu, Diogo de Gôngora de Tovar's wife, established a chapel, entailing to it a rent of wheat taken from a mill in Juromenha and a rent of olive oil. She declares that part of her moveable assets, such as objects made of gold, cushions and carpets, should be sold and the profit of the sale used in the acquisition of other properties to be entailed. The testator designated her husband to administrate the chapel, determining that after his death he would be succeeded by one of Duarte Fernandes Magro and Leonor da Gama's sons. However, the entail could not be passed to the couple's first born son. The future chapel's administrators would be obligated to support the celebration of 30 annual masses for the institutor's soul. She declared that her body would be buried in the church of S. Domingos of Elvas, inside her father's grave. Followed by an approval deed issued on 1671-03-07.

Will by which João Zuzarte da Fonseca, D. Mariana de Frias' widower, established a chapel in the hermitage of Espírito Santo of Lumiar, where his wife was buried and his body should be deposited, entailing to it the third part of his assets. He designated his son, Doutor Pedro Zuzarte da Fonseca de Moncorvo, to administrate it and obligated him to support the celebration of a daily mass in that place.

Will by which Doutor Pedro Nicolau and Catarina Prester, his mother, Nicolau Afonso's widow, establish an entail with houses in Lisboa, whose revenues should support the celebration of annual masses in the church of Santa Justa of Lisboa, where their bodies should be buried. The entail shall be inherited by one of Pedro Nicolau's sons or, if he dies childless, it will be transmitted to Lourenço Fernandes and his wife, Catarina Prester's niece.

Will of Rui de Oliveira, nephew and administrator of the chapel founded by Afonso Dias de Brião, in which he declared a list of all the assets he found entailed to the chapel, and the intention to annex other properties in order to ensure that a daily mass was always preached on the chapel. He also founded a chapel with a daily mass obligation preached for his own soul and for the soul of his mother, naming the oficiais da câmara da vila de Montemor-o-Velho as administrators of the chapel.

Will of Salvador Mendes and Maria Pais/Pires, establishing a chapel in the Church of Santa Maria Madalena in Monforte, with the obligation of a daily requiem mass, along with other masses on the main religious festivities of the year. The masses would be celebrated for the benefit of the souls of the testators, their parents and all those who had done good deeds and belonged to their lineage. A clergyman of the family was to be chosen as chaplain. The couple appointed their son, Estêvão Salvador, as administrator, followed by the closest and most honourable relative. Women and clerics were excluded from the administration.

Will of Violante de Almeida, widow of João Frade de Pina, founding an entail, called of Tramagal, with masses in the monastery of S. Domingos of Abrantes, and appointing Lucas Frade de Almeida, her son. She orders that the entailed quarter of her assets should be united to her husband's quarter to belong to their offspring and descendants. Her entail have the same clauses and obligations as her hurband's entail.
Will approved in 1642-04-30.

Will of Constança Pais, ordering, among other dispositions, the foundation of a chapel in the church of São Salvador, in Montemor-o-Velho, with a daily mass obligation, naming her nephew Bartolomeu Miguéis and Estêvão Gonçalves as first administrators, and the sons of Bartolomeu Miguéis after his death.

Will by which D. Aldonça de Sousa expresses her wish to be buried in her chapel of Nossa Senhora do Pranto, in the mother church of Santa Cristina of Condeixa, to where she orders the transfer of the bones of her husband, António de Sousa, who was buried in the church of Santa Cristina of Tentúgal. If she died before the transfer, she would be buried in Tentúgal until they were both taken to their new chapel. She entails several properties to her chapel and appoints António Heitor, her criado, as first administrator, to whom should succeed Paulo, his son, followed by the eldest male son. In case of extinction of the lineage, the bishop of Coimbra would choose the next administrators.

Will by which Maria Eanes, Gonçalo Pires' widow, member of the Conselho Régio, entails lands (bacelo) in the outskirts of Alenquer to the chapel of S. João Batista of the church of the convent of S. She appoints her cousin to be its first administrator, obligating him and his successors to support the celebration of annual masses for her soul in that church.

If one of them died without children, these assets would be transferred to the other. If they had children, it would be for both of them, with the obligation to fulfil the pious charges in the church of Nossa Senhora do Bispo. If there were no heirs, it should succeed the institutor's closest relative, starting with Vasco Fernandes Lobo and then his eldest son.

Will made by padre Manuel Gonçalves, in which he ordered, among several other dispositions, the foundation of an entail and chapel with a perpetual mass obligation of one daily mass celebrated on this chapel, invocation of Jesus Christ, in the mother church of Crato.
He left very detailed instructions for the ornate of the chapel, detailing all silverware, trousseau, garments, and altarpiece. He named his father, Domingos Gonçalves, as first administrator during his lifetime, with the condition he would complete the construction and ornamentation of the chapel. After his death, the administration would be handed to the institutor's sister, Catarina Gonçalves, who would appoint a fine and decent clergyman to celebrate the masses, one that must not be hebrew, moorish or mulatto descendancy, nor descend of, any "drunken man".
After the death of Catarina, the succession would always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. However, if she died without children, the administration would be handled to the same chaplain who celebrated the masses, to be elected by the local vigário and beneficiados in a voting session which would be based on the use of withe and dark beans to elect potential candidates.

Will made by João Fernandes Garção and his wife Beatriz Gonçalves, in which they ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual obligation of twenty one masses celebrated every year in their chapel of the Santíssima Trindade, in the church of Santiago of Marvão, where their bodies should be buried. They named their eldest son [whose name is not mentioned] as first administrator and from there on the succession should continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. They ordered that the ecclesiastical justices and the provedor das capelas should always take account on the administration.

Will made by Fernando Nunes Manhãs, in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual obligation of ten masses celebrated every year in the mother church of Alter do Chão, where his body should be buried. He named his niece Margarida Lourenço as first administrator and her descendants after her, with the condition that she would marry with Brás Manhãs, nephew of the institutor. If she did not want to marry him, then he, Brás, and his descendants would administrate the entail. If none of them had children, then the administration should be handled to the brother of Brás, Diogo Mendes or the closest relative. If the institutor's bloodline was extinguished then the officers of the municipal council of Alter do Chão whould appoint three among the poorest man to administrate it.

Will of father António Álvares. The testator states that he had previously built a chapel next to his house, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção. With his will, he established an entail with the perpetual obligation to celebrate Mass every Saturday. The first administrator would be his nephew Pedro Álvares, who had the right to appoint a successor, as long as it was someone related to the institutor and descended from the house of his father, Álvaro Peres Louça. Illegitimate children were excluded from the administration. The founder also required an inspection by the "visitador" every two years.

António Álvares' will, instituting a chapel with a weekly mass and appointing his nephew Pedro Álvares as administrator, granting him the power to choose his successor within António Álvares' kin.

Will by which Simão Botelho, prior of the church of Santa Maria de Penafeia, in the outskirts of Guarda, expresses his wish to be buried in the cathedral of Guarda and establishes a chapel with the pious obligation of 100 annual masses over his tomb, composed of his houses and farmlands in the parish of Arrifana, Guarda, his windmills, and his farmsteads and farmlands in Ribeira da Teixeira, Aldeia Ruiva, Benespera, Aldeia do Bispo, Gonçalo, Avelãs and Sortelha. After his death, his niece, Mariana, will succeed him in the chapel's administration, but only after she is married. Until then, Francisco de Paiva, her father and the testator's brother, will be the chapel's administrator.
