Entail foundation deed

Entail foundation deed of Rui de Carvalho, including part of the dowry of D. Francisca de Noronha, his daughter, for the marriage with D. Manuel Lobo de Meneses. He entailed a public debt instrument of 352 000 réis, for the fulfillment of charges, celebrated in the monastery of Santo António. The entail would be administered by the descendants of D. Francisca and, in the event of extinction, by the descendants of Rui de Carvalho.

Entail foundation deed by which Gaspar de Torres, fidalgo da Casa do Rei, and D. Leonor de Alarcão, his wife, establish an entail with five public debt instruments bought with the revenue donated to them by Afonso de Torres, their father and father-in-law, on the ocasion of their marriage. This donation had been made under the condition that they should establish an entail. They also establish an obligation of a daily mass in the chapel of Todos os Santos of the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa, which shall have five merceeiras who will pray for their souls. If the lineages of Gaspar de Torres and his siblings are extinguished, the entail shall pass to the Câmara de Lisboa, who shall build a hospital with a chapel of the invocation of S. Paulo with its rents.

Entail foundation deed by which Inês Álvares, widow of João Rodrigues Geraldes, establishes an entail with her properties in Sacavém and Lisboa, and a public debt instrument, donating it as a dowry to Baltasar Pires Machado, her husband's nephew, and to Bárbara Jorge, her great-niece, who must marry each other, and to their successors. She shall have the usufruct of the properties during her lifetime. The heirs of the entail shall give 4 000 reis to the monastery of Santo Elói every year for the care of 10 poor people. She reserves 25 alqueires of wheat, which her heirs must use to buy a property to entail to an obligation of three annual masses in the monastery of S. Salvador, Lisboa, where she wishes to be buried. This property shall pass to a person they appoint. She also appoints her heirs as administrators of the chapel of S. João Evangelista in the monastery of Santo Elói, which she possesses.
Part of the houses Inês Álvares entailed already had an obligation of twenty masses in the monastery of Salvador of Lisboa for the soul of Diogo Álvares, her first husband.
Baltasar Pires Machado is present and accepts these conditions. Bárbara Jorge is represented by her father, Sebastião Jorge, who accepts in her name.

Entail foundation deed by sargento-mor Domingos Pires de Carvalho and his wife Maria da Silva in which they ordered the foundation of an entail, composed of warehouses and urban dwellings in Salvador da Bahia, on the benefit of their son, capitão José Pires de Carvalho, named first administrator during his lifetime and his descendants after him, preferably the eldest male heirs. The administrators should benefit from the income of the entailed assets, reserving 1.400.000 réis in every year to spend in suffrages for the institutor's souls as long as the world lasted, and also 100.000 réis for the upkeep of entailed properties. José Pires de Carvalho and his four sisters expressly agreed on abdicating of their own reserved portions on the benefit of the entail. All administrators that succeeded on the administration of the entail would be obliged to annex and entail 200.000 réis so that the entail could be always enlarged.

Entail foundation deed by which Isabel de Avelar, wife of Henrique Nunes de Leão, establishes an entail with all of her properties. She appoints her grandson, Jorge Nunes de Leão, legitimized son of her deceased son, Martinho Gonçalves, as her universal heir. He shall order a daily mass in the convent of S. Francisco de Xabregas, to be paid with revenue from her houses in Lisboa. His sucessors shall have the surname and coat of arms of the Leão family. If his lineage is extinguished, the entail shall pass to the lineage of Isabel do Avelar's nephew, João de Avelar or to the lineage of João Taveira, her great-nephew, who shall keep the Avelar surname.

Entail foundation deed by which Manuel Pinheiro and his wife, Isabel Teixeira, establish an entail with the third part of their assets, designating their eldest son, António Pinheiro da Ponte, to become its first administrator. He and his descendants are obligated to support the celebration of annual masses for their souls in the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo of Lisboa.

Entail foundation deed by which Barnabé de Farelões and his wife Filipa Rodrigues Correia entailed the third parts of their assets, which included some houses, olive groves and vineyards, ir order to fulfill the pious charges celebrated in the church where they would be buried in Beja. Manuel Casco de Farelões and Brás Casco de Farelões, sons of the institutors, should be the first administrators, also should entail the third part of their assets. The entail should always be administrated by two administrators of each part. Followed by a consent deed of Ana Lopes das Donas, wife of Manuel Casco de Farelões.

Entail foundation deed by which Fernando de Andrade Zuzarte designated his cousin Domingos Godinho Freire (also appears as his nephew) to be its first administrator. He entails several assets, including the "herdade do Zambujal", on the outskirts of Évora, in order to fulfill the pious charges. The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa was supposed to administer the entail if the administrator was under 20 years of age.

Entail foundation deed by which Doutor Rodrigo Monteiro, do Conselho do rei, established an entail, designating his son João Rodrigues Monteiro to be its first administrator. He annexed to the entail the patronage of the church of São Pedro de Arrifana, on the outskirts of Santarém. The institutor also declared that he had been the administrator of Rui Gonçalves Franco's entail, in the Monastery of Santa Clara de Lisbon, from which he was removed by demand. He wanted to unite both entails if it would be proven that he had the right to administer Rui Gonçalves Franco's entail.

Entail foundation deed by Cristóvão de Brito, member of the king's council. Cristóvão justifies the institution of the "morgado" as a way to prevent the scattering of the estates and to preserve his memory, allowing for better service to God and the kingdom and greater honour to the noble houses. The instituor decided to entail interest in the "alfândega" of Lisbon, his houses in Lisbon, located in the parish of S. Lourenço, and a farmstead in Ribatejo, leaving instructions for the acquisition of other properties to be included in the entail. The income from the properties would also support two daily and perpetual masses to be celebrated in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, to be located in the church of the convent of Madre de Deus de Lisboa, which was under construction, and for which he had already purchased liturgical furnishings, such as a retable of "Nossa Senhora". The first administrator would be his nephew João de Brito, son of Lopo de Brito. An inventory of the assets was to be drawn up, with three copies: one for the administrator and the other two to be kept at the S. Elói Monastery in Lisbon and at the Hospital of Todos-os-Santos. His successors were also obliged to entail more property. The succession would pass through the first-born sons, excluding illegitimate children and clerics. The presumptive heir was not allowed to marry without the consent of his parents, under the penalty of being removed from the succession. In addition, each administrator had to be physically and mentally fit, to be loyal to the Church and to the Crown, and to use the name and the coat of arms of the Britos.

Entail foundation deed by D. Gil Eanes da Costa and D. Joana da Silva, his wife. They entail their third parts and appoint D. António, their eldest male son, first administrator, to be succeded by his brothers in order of birth, and only afterwards by D. António's children. The institutors and successors would be buried in the chancel of the convent of Almoster, as stated in a contract signed with the abbess and convent. They appoint the administrator of the entail patron of that chapel. The obligation of the institution of the entail was included in the marriage contract of the institutors.

Entail foundation deed by which D. Inês, widow of D. António de Miranda, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, established an entail with the third part of her assets, including her farmstead in Cabrela ("quinta da Landeira"). She appointed her daughter, D. Briolanja, and her husband, D. João de Lima, to administrate it, obligating them and their successors to support the celebration of annual masses for her soul and for the soul of her late husband in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição of the convent of S. Francisco of Setúbal.

Entail foundation deed by which D. Margarida de Meneses established an entail with properties she owned in Aveiras de Baixo and Faro, an estate in Monforte ("herdade dos Grações"), houses in Santarém and Lisboa, 2 public debt instruments and 4 000 cruzados which the King owed her. After the institutor's death, the entail would be transmitted to her eldest son. The administrators of the entail were obligated to support the celebration of annual masses in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa. The entail was founded with the consent of Diogo da Silva, the institutor's husband.

Entail foundation deed of Manuel Lobo Pereira. He entails the farm of Penavila, in the parish of São Salvador de Delães, on the outskirts of Barcelos, and a farmhouse (casal) in the parish of São Cristóvão de Rio Mau, to fulfill charges. He appoints Mateus Pereira, his brother, first administrator. The latter had to appoint a legitimate son to succeed him in the administration. If he did not appoint any, the eldest would succeed. If his mother was still alive when the founder died, she would administer the chapel for the rest of her life and only after her death would it pass to Mateus Pereira.

Entail foundation deed by which Manuel de Miranda entailed his estate, namely houses in Midões, a public debt instrument of 200 000 réis and 8 000 cruzados, and ordered the construction of a chapel devoted to Nossa Senhora da Assunção. After his death, he would be succeeded by his eldest son.

If they have no children, the entail shall be inherited by Luís Rodrigues de Paiva, brother of D. Leonor de Paiva, or one of his brothers, if he doesn't have any descendants. They appoint their houses in Lisboa as head of the entail.

Entail foundation deed by Luís Álvares de Madureira, fidalgo da casa do rei, his wife and first-cousin Joana de Madureira, and his aunt Isabel de Madureira. Together they decided to establish an entail, using their farmstead of Freixo, in Guilhabreu, as the head of the entail. They decided to create the entail in order to avoid the division of the estates and the dilution of the memory of the lineage, arguing that the concentration of the inheritance in one institution, managed by the first-born, was also a way of supporting the other relatives. At that time, the couple had no children and decided that in the absence of descendants, the surviving member of the couple had the power to appoint the successor. However, the administrator of the entail should primarly be the first-born son, excluding clerics and those who commited lese-majeste crimes. The administrators were also required to entail other lands and to use the Madureira name and coat of arms. An inventory of the entail was to be made, with three copies: one to be kept by the administrator, and the others to be kept in the Municipality of Porto and in the Cathedral.

Entail foundation deed by Manuel Madureira de Barbosa. The institutor entails all of his estates and those he had inherited from his father and establishes a chapel dedicated to Santo António, to be located in Mesquinhata, Baião. He appointed his illegitimate son, João de Madureira Barbosa, as the first administrator. The heir was to be the first-born son, excluding illegitimate children and those who had committed lese-majeste crimes.

Entail foundation deed by António de Melo and Catarina de Sampaio, his wife, with their available portions, located in Ramirão, in the outskirts of Algodres. They also order the foundation of the chapel of Santo António, in the same place, with the pious obligation of 24 perpetual masses, per year. The institutors appoint Jorge de Melo, their eldest son, as the successor in the entail's administration. Jorge de Melo was present and entails his reserved portions.

Entail foundation deed by Pedro da Rocha Barbosa, Maria de Azevedo Moreira and Sebastiana de Azevedo. Pedro da Rocha Barbosa and Maria de Azevedo Moreira choose their estate in Deocriste to their reserved portion, which they left to their son Francisco da Rocha Lobo as entail with pious obligations for their souls. In this context, Sebastiana de Azevedo, Maria de Azevedo Moreira's sister, single woman, also entailed her inheritance to the institution, adding pious obligations.

Entail foundation deed by which Aires de Saldanha Meneses e Sousa and his wife, D. Luísa Inês de Távora, renovate the institution of their entail, made in 1684-02-08, and correct some of its clauses. They list the properties of the entail: the noble houses near the convent of Nossa Senhora de Jesus of Lisboa, lands in front of the monastery of S. Bento of Lisboa, farmsteads in Santarém, public debt instruments, casais in Belas and Salvaterra de Magos, leases and other properties. They designate their eldest son as future administrator, with the obligation of ordering a weekly mass in a place of his choice. If their lineage is extinguished, the entail shall pass to the Misericórdia of Lisboa with an obligation of a daily mass for their souls.

Entail foundation deed by which Isabel da Silveira, daughter of Luís da Silveira and D. Branca de Mendonça, founded an entail and designated her sister D. Ana de Mendonça to be its first administrator. After her sister's death it should succeed her eldest son or, in his absence, her eldest daughter. If D. Ana de Mendonça died without heirs, it should succeed her husband D. João de Sousa, or the closest kin of the Silveira's family. The successors of this entail were also obligated to order the celebration of masses for her and her parents' soul. This entail is composed of "matos" and "arneiros" located in the place of "Virtudes", "marinhas" and "praias" called “Manois” , and the herdade of "Mendonças", on the outskirts of Avis.

Entail foundation deed by which Cristóvão de Castro and his wife Joana Marinho founded an entail with all their assets, designating their daughter Isabel Soares de Castro to be its first administrator. She is present and agrees to this foundation. After their daughter's death, it should succeed her heirs, namely the eldest son or, in his absence, the eldest daughter. If she doesn't have children the entail will pass to Manuel Pereira de Castro, son of Cristóvão's brother, Manuel Pereira de Castro, and of Francisca de Abreu, or to heirs of Paio Gomes Pereira and Pedro Marinho Falcão, siblings of the institutors, who shall marry each other. The future bride or groom of the successor should incorporate the sixth part of their dowry into this entail. The successors were also obligated to give the "alimentos" to their siblings until they turned 18 years old. The institutors also declared that they were the "padroeiros" of the Monastery of São Bento de Monção, where they founded a chapel and possessed their graves. The administrator was obligated to order the celebration of masses in this chapel for their and their parents' soul, paying for a chaplain. This entail is composed of a farm of Bemposta, with its houses, oil press, cattle houses, orchards and vineyards; others vineyards called “Penaboa”, “Pombal”, “Veiga da Lagoa”, “Regueiro”, “Brejoeira”, “Ribeira” and “Cavaleiro”, on the outskirts of Monção. They also possessed some houses located Monção and "Seiradelo"; a crop field in the parish of Macedo and others called “Pedra da Rainha”, "Fundões", "Lamelas", "Lagoa", "Caldelas", "Sido" and "Salgueiro"; and the "herdades" of "Pedra”, "Portocavaleiro", “Testeiras”, “Lameiro do Trigal”, "Trigães”, “Tojeiro”, “Sidreiro”, “Lagoa”, “Cova do Barro”, “Salgueiro”, “Veiga de Valdosende”, “Paço” and "Cacheva".

Entail foundation deed by which Francisco de Gouveia Daltro, Isabel Rebelo de Macedo, his wife, and the licenciado Tomé de Gouveia Cardoso, his brother, abade da igreja de Santa Cruz da Trapa e beneficiado da igreja de Santiago de Beja, establish an entail uniting their parts of the farmstead of Vila do Rei, which the brothers had inherited from their parents, Tomé de Gouveia Cardoso and Vitória Borges de Figueiredo, and other properties they have. They declare their father had ordered the construction of an hermitage dedicated to Santa Catarina in that farmstead, with the obligation of three annual masses, which they entail to it. The entail shall pass to Francisco's descendants by appointment from him, his wife or Tomé. If the three of them die without making an appointment, the entail will pass to their eldest son or to the descendants of their sister, Maria de Figueiredo Gouveia, wife of António Cardoso de Castelo Branco.

Entail foundation deed by which António de Figueiredo, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, and his wife, Isabel Vaz de Castelo Branco, establish an entail with their third parts, consisting of their leases in Vila Chã do Monte, Viseu. They bequeath them to their eldest son or daughter and their successors, with the obligation of ordering masses in the hermitage of Santo António of Vila Chã do Monte.

Entail foundation deed by which Brás Teles de Meneses, membro do Conselho do Rei and coronel da gente da guerra, and his wife, D. Catarina Maria de Faro Henriques, established an entail, incorporating in it the third part of their assets, which comprised a farmstead in Lamarosa, Coruche, houses in Pampulha, Lisboa, and rents (foros) in the farmstead of Cotovia. They also entailed to it 8 tapestries depicting the life of S. João Batista and the weapons used by Brás Teles de Meneses. The institutors designated Fernando Teles de Meneses, their firstborn son, to succeed them in the entail's administration. All its future administrators were allowed to deposit their remains in the tomb erected by the founders.
Paulo da Rocha, curator of their eldest son, gave his approval to this deed.

Entail foundation deed by which João Correia de Lacerda established an entail, incorporating his farm of Togia, on the outskirts of Tomar, and a public debt instrument of 100 000 réis in Imposição dos Vinhos do Porto. He designated his nephew José Galvão de Lacerda to be its first administrator and he accepted all the conditions.

He appoints Luís Coelho de Pimentel, his son, first administrator, to marry Mariana da Cunha, daughter of João Alves da Cunha Gusmão. The eldest son of this marriage was to succeed him. António de Pina Mascarenhas and D. Luísa Pimentel, his wife, nephews of the institutor, also annex assets to the entail established by their uncle, as did João Coelho de Sousa and D. Joana Luísa Coelho de Sousa, his sister, sons of the institutor.

Entail foundation deed by which Sebastião de Abreu, fidalgo da Casa do Rei e escrivão da sua Fazenda, and his wife, D. Antónia de Vasconcelos, establish an entail which they donate as a dowry to their eldest son, Gaspar de Abreu. They entail their farmsteads in Campolide, S. Bento and Alvalade, Lisboa, and other properties. Their entail shall be called entail of Santo Onofre, and shall be annexed to the chapel of the same invocation in the monastery of Santíssima Trindade, with an obligation of annual masses for their souls. If their son dies without descendants, the entail shall pass to his brother, Filipe de Abreu. Gaspar de Abreu is present, accepts these conditions and promises to annex his legitime to the entail.

He entails a third of his assets, consisting of several estates, located in Alentejo, in the outskirts of Campo Maior, Arronches and Ouguela, up to a maximum value of 1 000 cruzados. He appoints Jerónimo Mexia, his son, as first administrator, to whom his eldest son should succeed.

Entail foundation deed made by Duarte Gomes da Silveira in which he ordered, among several dispositions, the foundation of an entail and chapel of the invocation of Salvador do Mundo in the church of the Misericórdia of Paraíba's captaincy, with a perpetual pious obligation of four masses celebrated every week as long as the world lasted and one sung mass on the day of Nossa Senhora das Neves. He named his son in law António Barbalho Bezerra and his wife Joana Gomes da Silveira, daughter of the institutor, as first administrators of the entail during their lifetimes, and, after their deaths, the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. No administrator could ever marry with a another person of the so-called 'infected races', under the penalty of loosing the administration. He recomended that no administrator should ever rise his own children with wine, as a root of sin. All administrators should annex one third of their own reserved portions to the entail. The institutor also disposed that all administrators should bear the surname Silveira and the coat of arms of the Gomes and Bezerras, adding a motto beneath it with the words Verdade e Felicidade (truth and happiness) that should be present in all their seals, chairs, curtains.

He designated his son André Mendes Ferreira to be its first administrator. The administrator should appoint the successor of this entail among his children.

Entail foundation deed by Jerónimo Correia Homem, capitão-mor of the "Couto" of the Archbishopric of Braga. Jerónimo decided to entail in a "morgado" the lands he had inherited from his parents, those he had received from his marriage and others he had bought during his life. The entail was to include, among other things, the Vimieiro estate and properties in Braga. The entail, established in honour of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, was coupled with the obligation to celebrate 12 annual masses in the chapel in Braga Cathedral, founded by Jerónimo's parents. Manuel Correia de Sousa, the founder's son, was appointed as the first administrator, with the power to choose one of his sons or daughters to succeed him. If he had no descendants, the administration would pass to the eldest son of his sister, Mariana Coelho. It was forbidden for any administrator to marry a Jew, a Moor or a black person. Illegitimate children and those who had committed lese-majeste crimes were excluded from the administration.

Entail foundation deed by Francisco de Carvalho Pereira, with the obligation of a weekly mass for his soul, his parents, and for the souls in the Purgatory, and appointing as administrator his brother Bento de Carvalho Pereira and his offspring. Bento had the power to appoint a successor within his offspring or relatives, and had the obligation to deliver some annual rents to his sisters who were nuns at the monastery of Remédios in Braga. This foundation deed fulfilled an intention previously outlined in the dowry deed of 1624-11-09, by which Francisco donated some properties with pious obligations to his brother Bento.

Maria Botelho, establish an entail with their third parts, consisting of houses and estates in Lisboa and other properties in the outskirts of the city. They designate their eldest son, Manuel Soares, as first administrator, and his descendants afterwards. The entail shall be associated to the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição which they established in the monastery of Santíssima Trindade of Lisboa, and to which was entailed a public debt instrument set in the Casa da Alfândega of Lisboa, with the obligation of a daily mass for their souls. The chapel would be administered by the administrators of the entail, but its properties were to be separated from it.

Entail foundation deed by which Francisco Soares de Abreu established an entail with his houses in Lisboa, a rent (foro) of a wine barrel taken from a farmstead in Carcavelos, a public debt instrument of 100 000 réis and 1 000 cruzados. He designated his eldest son, Cristóvão Soares de Abreu, to administrate it, obligating him and his descendants to support the celebration of a daily perpetual mass in a church close to their residence. Cristóvão Soares de Abreu accepted this deed.

Entail foundation deed by which António de Sousa de Macedo and D. Mariana de Lemercier, his wife, change clauses of a previous entail foundation deed issued on 1673-11-08. They establish an entail with houses in Lisboa, a farmstead in that city ("quinta de Nossa Senhora da Luz"), lands in Carnide, a rent (foro) in Azambuja, properties in Benavente and the captaincy of Ilha Grande de Joanes, Brasil, designating their son, D. Luís Gonçalo de Sousa de Macedo, Barão da Ilha Grande de Joanes, to administrate it. The institutors attach this entail to the chapel they had founded in the convent of Nossa Senhora de Jesus, where their bodies and those of their descendants would be buried and annual masses would be celebrated for their souls. D. Luís Gonçalo de Sousa de Macedo and his wife, D. Mariana de Távora, approved this deed.

Entail foundation deed by António do Prado and Maria Monteiro Cardoso, his wife, and donation of the same to Francisco Monteiro Cardoso, their brother. The related assets are entailed, reserving their usufruct while the founders are alive, and the charges are established, celebrated in the hermitage of São João that existed in their farm of São João de Vale de Antas, which had to be repaired. After the death of Francisco Monteiro Cardoso and Leonor Henriques, his wife, the entail was to be inherited by Francisco Soeiro, their eldest son.
It contains a letter of attorney of Maria Monteiro Cardoso so that António do Prado, her husband, can represent her (dated 1622-11-14).

Entail foundation deed by Gaspar de Magalhães de Meneses, fidalgo da casa do rei, and his wife Catarina Barbosa. They both reserved their "terças", incorporating in this portion and in the entail the manor of Torre, in São Salvador de Vila Cova, together with their halves of the farmsteads of Pereira and Porta. The first administrator would be their first-born son, Tomé de Magalhães de Meneses. Tomé and his successors were forced to order the celebration of perpetual masses in the chapel of Santo António, located in the manor of Torre. After their son, the succession should run as it is stated in the "Ordenações" of the Kingdom. The successors were compelled to use the surnames Magalhães and Meneses. Clerics and illegitimate children were excluded from the administration, as well as those who had committed lese-majeste crimes.

The institutor also orders that the entail's administrators will administer the chapel she built in the monastery of S. Francisco of Lisbon, with the pious obligation of a perpetual daily mass for her and her husband's soul. Entail foundation deed by Manuel Gonçalves Antão, canon in Braga Cathedral. Having no forced heirs, the founder declared that he wanted to establish a "morgado" with several properties, namely the Vila Chã farmstead with its hermitage dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Amor. An obligation was imposed to ensure the perpetual celebration of two masses every week. They were to be celebrated at the tomb of the founder, which was to be in the Chapel of the Santíssimo Sacramento or the Chapel of the Espírito Santo, in the Cathedral of Braga. Manuel Gonçalves Antão appointed his nephew Francisco Pereira Marinho as administrator of the entail, with the power to appoint one of his children as successor. Illegitimate children were excluded from the administration. If the last administrator failed to appoint a successor, the entail passed to the next of kin, with preference given to men. The presumptive heirs of the entail could not marry without their parents' consent or they would lose their right to administration. A copy of the deed of foundation had to be recorded in the "Livro do Registo Geral das Capelas".

She entails her quinta in Ribas de Alenquer, instead of the property appointed in her son's will, with an obligation of four masses in the church of Santa Justa of Lisboa, and another mass in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa. She appoints her other son, António de Figueiredo, cavaleiro da Casa do Rei, as first administrator, and his successors thereafter. If António de Figueiredo dies without descendance, the entail shall be bequeathed to Leonor de Avelar, Isabel do Avelar's niece.

Entail foundation deed in which Frei Bartolomeu de Santo Agostinho and Miguel de Abreu, Ana de Abreu’s brothers, fulfiled her will by executing the deed in front of the provedor dos resíduos, including the necessary conditions and obligations. The entail was instituted by Ana de Abreu, who chose her brother Miguel de Abreu as the first owner. Frei Bartolomeu de Santo Agostinho and Miguel de Abreu stipulated that Miguel Abreu’s eldest son should succeed him or, if he did not have a son, his eldest daughter. They provided detailed alternatives for succession, where males should always precede females. If the direct line of descendants of Miguel de Abreu were to end, other lines of the family would be considered except for the offspring of D. Margarida, Isabel de Abreu’s daughter. Illegitimate succession could only be considered as a last resort and clerical succession could occur before passing the entail to a transversal line. Other conditions for succession are detailed, including the pious charges Ana de Abreu established and the obligation of successors to annex a third of their assets. The remaining amount of Ana Abreu’s assets was delivered to Miguel de Abreu, who was to invest it to enrich the entail. It inserts an extract from Ana de Abreu’s will.

The future administrators were all obligated to support the celebration of 42 annual masses for the institutor's souls in the chapel of Jesus of the church of S. Julião of that city. They declared that their bodies had to be buried in that chapel.

He appoints priests Domingos da Silva and Ambrósio de Carvalho, as first chaplains and Lucrécia Lopes de Carvalho, daughter of Baltazar Rodrigues, his cousin, as first administrator. Licenciado Domingos de Carvalho, canon of the cathedral of Lamego, uncle of Lucrécia Lopes de Carvalho, undertakes to attach to the entail all the property inherited from his parents.

They entailed their farmsted of Vilarinho de São Romão, with a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Salvação, in which a brotherhood was instituted, atributing to the entail's administrator the role of surveiling the brotherhood's activities. Clerics were excluded from the succession, and the administrators were to use the surname Lobo and the coat of arms of both the Lobos and the Barbosas. Presumptive heirs who married without their parents' consent, with people of lesser honor and wealth, were excluded from the succession.

Domingos, in Porto. The founder spituales that the successor to the entail should be primarily the first-born son, forced to use his family name in public and private documents.

The couple declared that they had founded a chapel in their farmstead of Eiras, in São Salvador de Pedralva, the construction of which had not yet been completed but was to be finished, with the images of São Gonçalo and Santa Maria inside. They entailed properties and rents to the chapel, with the perpetual obligation to celebrate masses every sunday for the souls of the founders. The first administrator would be their son-in-law, Sebastião Machado de Azevedo, who had the power to appoint a relative to succeed him, excluding clerics and forbidding marriages with people of Jewish, Moorish, black or mulatto descent. The administrators were obliged to use the family name and to entail properties. The deed of foundation had to be registered in the "Livro das Capelas do Registo Geral" of Braga.

Entail and chapel foundation deed by which Pedro Carreiro, cavaleiro da Ordem de Cristo, and Leonor Nunes de Macedo, his wife, establish a chapel in the convent of S. They entail 20 000 reis of interest and Pedro Carreiro's properties to an obligation of a daily mass, an annual divine office and the obligation of marrying an orphan every year. Pedro Carreiro appoints his wife, Leonor Nunes de Macedo, as his universal heir. After their deaths, the entail shall be given to Paulo Carreiro, Pedro Carreiro's cousin and to his children, afterwards.

Guiomar Nunes Angel, establishes an entail, according to a previous will he had made with his wife. He entails both their third parts, consisting of houses in Lisboa and properties in Beja, and establishes a daily mass in the church of Madre de Deus de Xabregas, Lisboa, where he wishes to be buried. He appoints their eldest son, Jerónimo Soares de Vilhegas, as first administrator. Jerónimo Soares de Vilhegas and his wife, D. Madalena de Távora, are both present and accept to annex their third parts to the entail. Manuel Soares Vilas Boas, minor, grandson of the institutors and son of Jerónimo Soares de Vilhegas and his previous wife, D. Entail and chapel foundation deed by Simão de Medeiros and Isabel Gomes. The couple declares not having children, stating that their will was to entail their estates, formed by houses in Porto and rural assets in the outskirts of the city. The property was to be owned by a single person in the manner of a "morgado". A part of the income should be channelled to the monastery of Madre de Deus de Monchique, in Porto, where they have previously negotiated the institution of a chapel, a site of burial for themselves and their descendants, to be called the "Chapel of the Medeiros". Their son Teodoro de Medeiros was already buried there, and the institutor’s coat of arms was to be placed on the wall. If the chapel wasn't accepted by the provincial of the order, the administrator of the entail was to transfer the remains of the institutor to the convent of S. Bento de Avé Maria in Porto, where Simão's parents were buried. The surviving member of the couple would be the first administrator. After them, the administrator was to be recruited from among Simão's relatives, and was to be a male, excluding clerics, illegitimate children and those who had committed crimes against God and the King. The first administrator would be obliged to register the deed of foundation in the records of the Provedoria of Porto, and his successors would have to entail more property when they took possession of the entail.

They entail a third of their assets, in an amount greater than 12 000 cruzados, to fulfill the charges, celebrated in the chapel they would have built in Cassurrães. They appoint Miguel Osório Beltrão de Almeida, his eldest son, administrator. In case of extinction of the lineage, the administration of the link would be the responsibility of Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Aguiar da Beira. The founders were administrators of the entail instituted by António de Almeida, his grandfather, to which they entailed a property, in order to fulfill their institution. They also order that the same register in the respective tombo.

Entail and chapel foundation deed by Pedro Machado and his wife Isabel Francisca. The couple decided to entail properties "em capela e morgado". They were both to own the properties during their lifetimes. After their death, the entail was to be held by their son, Francisco Machado. The entail was linked to the obligation to celebrate perpetual masses in different places, such as the burial place of the institutors, which was yet to be decided, and the chapel of São Pedro, in Braga Cathedral. Succession to the entail was to be by appointment, as the founders argued that this mechanism would make children more obedient to their parents. If Francisco Machado or another administrator failed to appoint a successor, the entail was to go to the first-born son. Illegitimate children and those who had committed lese-majeste crimes were excluded from the administration.

Entail and chapel foundation deed by Gonçalo Jacome. Gonçalo decided to entail his lands in Aldeia da Torre in a "capela e vínculo de morgado". The first administrator was to be his daughter Catarina Jacome, married to Gonçalo Ferreira, or alternatively the descendants of Gonçalo Jacome's brothers, Domingos, Catarina Francisca or Paulo Jacome. The administrators had the right to appoint one of their children as their successor. However, people of illegitimate descent were excluded. The administrators were obliged to use the surname Jacome and to celebrate masses at the Espírito Santo altar in Santa Maria da Aveleda church.

Dowry deed by Isabel Gomes, widow of António Álvares Estaço, to her daughter, Jerónima Madeira, on the ocasion of her marriage to Simão de Seixas, son of Simão de Seixas and Madalena Fernandes. Part of the dowry is made up of a public debt instrument, which she entails with an obligation of masses in the convent of S. Francisco de Xabregas, Lisboa, to be administered by Jerónima Madeira and her husband, and by the successors of her marriage.

Dowry deed by which João de Meira Carrilho, canon of Braga Cathedral and commissioner of the Inquisition, son of Gonçalo de Meira and Beatriz Mendes, decided to endow his great-niece Isabel de Meira Carrilho, daughter of Gonçalo Carrilho and Ana da Costa, by her marriage to Estêvão Falcão, fidalgo da casa do rei and son of Manuel Falcão Costa and Ana Maria Teixeira. João de Meira Carrilho left a farmstead in São Miguel do Couto, along with 10,000 cruzados to be used for the purchase of a house and land, declaring that all this property would be entailed. The couple would be the first owners, followed by their descendants, with preference given to first-born sons. The administrators were obliged to use the family name of Meira and to pay for the celebration of 50 annual masses in the Church of Espírito Santo, located in the São Marcos Hospital in Braga, where João de Meira Carrilho would be buried. João de Meira Carrilho also declares that he was the administrator of an entail, located in Castelo de Vide, which had been founded by his father João de Meira, chaplain to the late Infante and Cardinal D. Henrique, and to which he appointed his niece as administrator, since she was of "his blood and generation". João de Meira Carrilho acquired more lands and imposed more masses to be celebrated. He also instructed his heirs to place an image of Christ in the chapel of the mother church of Castelo de Vide. The image was engraved with the relics of several saints. It had belonged to the Emperor Charles V and was given to Manuel Álvares Cardoso when he was secretary to the Marquis of Arronches in Madrid, who bequeathed it to João de Meira Carrilho. In view of its importance, the image and the relics engraved in it were considered to be the head of the entail.

Dowry deed by which Catarina de Sá, her brother Luís Pereira de Sá and his wife D. Catarina, wanted to give a dowry to their nephew and son José de Sousa Pereira to marry with D. Isabel de Távora Coutinho, daughter of Pedro Lopes de Quadros and his wife D. Maria Francisca Teles. The donators wanted to incorporate their thirds into the entail founded by Catarina de Sá, which would include some lands, "casais" and olive groves near to the fam of Chafariz das Pipas. It should succeed in the entail the eldest son of his nephew José de Sousa Pereira. The institutor's brother also endowed his son with a farm located in the place of "Meca" and other "prazos" in Lisboa and Guarda. The successors were obligated to order the celebration of masses in the chapel of São Francisco Xavier, in the Church of São Pedro de Alenquer, and were also obligated to deliver the masses certificates to the Misericórdia of Alenquer. D. Luísa Antónia de Távora endowed the bride with a farm located on the outskirts of Lisboa, and 60 000 réis of a "tença" she possessed in Alfândega de Lisboa. Preceded by a power of attorney of D. Luísa Antónia de Sousa dated 1673-05-24.

Sá, Catarina de (d.1677)

Dowry deed by which João de Valadares Carneiro and his wife Catarina Pereira donated their assets to their son Luís de Valadares in order to get married with Ana do Amaral. They established an entail using their thirds, with the obligation to celebrate masses in the Misericórdia do Porto and Church of S. Bento, S. Geraldo and Chagas. This entail should be succeeded by his eldest son and the future successors should also incorporate half of their thirds into this entail. The institutor's son was donated with the farm of Veiga de Poucos and the "prazo" of São João da Foz. If the grooms did not live in the institutors' house, they should receive the rents of a public debt instrument of 100 000 réis in Imposição dos Vinhos, 12 000 réis in the houses of "Abelheiro" belonging to the chapel of Maria Carneiro, the prazo of "Meixeira" and Quebrantões, a "herdade" on the outskirts of Barcelos and a vineyard located in Mosteiro.

Dowry deed by which D. Luísa Inês de Távora, former lady of the queen, daughter of D. Inês Antónia de Távora and of João de Saldanha de Sousa, makes an agreement with her fiancé, Aires de Saldanha de Meneses e Sousa, do Conselho do Rei, to establish an entail with the dowry they have just agreed on. The entail shall be headed by the noble houses they have near the convent of Nossa Senhora de Jesus of Lisboa and shall be inherited by the eldest son of this marriage. If they have no descendants the entail shall be dissolved. If their descendants' line is extinguished, the entail shall pass to the Misericórdia of Lisboa with an obligation of two daily masses for the institutors' souls.

The dowry assets include a third of the assets of João Domingues Borralho and Inês Alcoforado, his now deceased wife, given in the form of an entail. The bride and groom would be the first administrators, and after their deaths, they would be left to their eldest son.

Dowry deed that priest Baltasar Rodrigues Cortês, in his name and that of Fernando Mendes de Souto, his brother, absent from the Kingdom, made to D. Sebastiana Mendes de Moura, their sister, for her marriage to Martinho Afonso da Silva. The dowry includes assets inherited from their parents, namely houses, located in Estremoz, and several rural properties, valued at more than 3.000 cruzados. Donors reserve the usufruct of the proceeds during their lives, the donation being made in the form of chapel and entail.

Dowry deed in which padre Manuel Fernandes Vitória ordered the foundation of an entail and simultaneously endowed Francisco de Machado Faria with several properties in Rabo do Peixe and Sete Cidades, in S. Miguel Island, donated to him on the occasion of his marriage with Mariana de Faria Vitória, his niece. He named them to be the first administrators of the entail and, preferably, their eldest male descendants after them, who would have the perpetual obligation of a daily mass in the chapel of N. Sra. da Vitória, in Relva, S. Miguel island, always celebrated by a relative. The administrators would also be obliged to support the costs of the festivities in honour of N. Sra. da Vitória during 21 years. Every administrator should bare the surname "Vitória" or, otherwise, lose the administration. No clergyman or convict on the crime of lese-majeste could inherit the administration. If the bloodline of the first administrators was ever extinguished, the entail should be transmitted and annexed to the entail founded by António Lopes de Faria.

Antónia de Sequeira, his wife. After the death of Nicolau de Matos Leitão, the administration should pass to a son of his choice, and the same would happen in the following generations. If descendants were lacking, a recolhimento should be founded, invoking Senhora da Piedade, in the place of Mealhada, on the outskirts of Castelo de Vide.

Donation deed by Pedro Eanes Campelo to Lourenço Campelo for his marriage with Filipa Guimarães. With this donation, Pedro Eanes Campelo established an entail that was to remain in the possession of Lourenço and his descendants, to be transmitted through the first-born sons, excluding clerics, illegitimate children and people who had committed lese-majeste crimes. The head of the entail was to be the estate of Barca, in São Romão da Ucha, Prado. A perpetual obligation was imposed to celebrate 10 annual masses in the church where Pedro Eanes Cameplo decided to be buried.

Francisco de Xabregas. She also appoints her stepdaughter as administrator of the chapel established by her brother, António Correia, in the church of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França.

Donation deed by which Domingos Ribeiro Cirne, Deputado da Mesa da Consciência e Concelho das Ordens, donated to his brother Lourenço Peixoto Cirne, cavaleiro professo na Ordem de Cristo, all his movable and immovable goods in order to establish an entail. His brother should succeed in this entail with the obligation to order the celebration of masses in the Church of São Cristóvão, in Lisboa. After his death, he should be succeed by his eldest son Cristóvão Peixoto and his heirs. If his brother died before his wife D. Maria de Sequeira, his widow should succeed in this entail, until the marriage of their eldest son. The successors were also obligated to incorporate the half of their "legítimas" if they were single, or their thirds if they were married. This entail is composed of some houses located in the parish of São Cristóvão, and a farm of Caparica, located in Murfacém, on the outskirts of Almada. The institutor's brother Lourenço Peixoto Cirne accepted these obligations.

Donation deed by which Maria Teresa de Leiria, Filipe de Araújo Pacheco's widow, donated a farmstead (quinta) in Olivais, Lisboa, houses in that city and a vineyard in Caparica to D. Francisca Antónia de Brito, D. Francisca Maria de Brito's daughter, niece of the donor, thus instituting an entail. The entail's first administrator had the obligation to give, each year, 3 000 réis to one of the daughters of Doutor Manuel Freire de Ocanha; the same amount of money to Maria Ana de Miranda, Dinis de Barros' wife, if she became a widow and 2 000 réis to Manuel de Padilha de Miranda's daughter, who was a nun in the convent of Santa Ana. The entail's future administrators had to support the celebration of annual masses for the institutor's soul in the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo of Lisboa.
The donor also declared that any assets which could be obtained at the end of the legal dispute opposing her to João da Fonseca, Maria da Conceição and Gaspar Abreu de Freitas, concerning the patrimony of her late brother, Simão Monteiro de Leiria, should be incorporated in the entail.

Donation deed made by Beatriz Rodrigues in which she donated several properties in Portalegre's district to Rodrigo de Reboredo with the condition that he would study and became a clergyman. Those properties should compose an entail that would have a perpetual pious obligation of twenty masses celebrated every year by Rodrigo himself during his lifetime. After the death of Rodrigo, the administration would be transmitted to his mother Francisca de Reboredo or some of her daughters, preferably Maria de Matos in first place, or Luísa de Reboredo, in second. And from there on the succession should always continue on their children, preferably the eldest male heir. However, if none of them had children, the administration would be handled to the Tesoureiro-Mor of the mother church of Portalegre with the same pious obligation of twenty masses and two more privileged masses celebrated every year.
