Entail foundation deed

Entail foundation deed by which Doutor Rodrigo Monteiro, do Conselho do rei, established an entail, designating his son João Rodrigues Monteiro to be its first administrator. He annexed to the entail the patronage of the church of São Pedro de Arrifana, on the outskirts of Santarém. The institutor also declared that he had been the administrator of Rui Gonçalves Franco's entail, in the Monastery of Santa Clara de Lisbon, from which he was removed by demand. He wanted to unite both entails if it would be proven that he had the right to administer Rui Gonçalves Franco's entail.

Entail foundation deed by D. Gil Eanes da Costa and D. Joana da Silva, his wife. They entail their third parts and appoint D. António, their eldest male son, first administrator, to be succeded by his brothers in order of birth, and only afterwards by D. António's children. The institutors and successors would be buried in the chancel of the convent of Almoster, as stated in a contract signed with the abbess and convent. They appoint the administrator of the entail patron of that chapel. The obligation of the institution of the entail was included in the marriage contract of the institutors.

Entail foundation deed of the chapel of Pedro Vaz Guedes de Tabuado, by which the founder seeks to clarify the content of his will. He established a chapel in the church of São Miguel, in Santa Comba, where his parents, he and his descendants were to be buried. He entails his farmstead in Santa Comba and appoints Gonçalo Vaz Guedes, his son, as administrator of his entail. It was up to the administrator to name the successor, from among his children. In case of extinction of the lineage, the administration would be left to the abbot of the church of São Miguel.

Entail foundation deed by Lopo de Barros, fidalgo da casa do rei, and Beatriz Bravo, acting as a refoundation act of the entail established by Martinho Mendes de Barros. This entail was also made up of several properties in Braga, to which the couple decided to add their farmstead of Real, which they had inherited from Diogo Bravo, Beatriz's father. Its religious duties, with masses for the soul of Martinho and also for Kings Afonso V, João II and Manuel I, were carried out in the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, located in the cloister of Braga Cathedral, where the tombs were located and which Lopo and Beatriz had rebuilt. The "morgado", united with the previous entail, was created to ensure the preservation and memory of their lineage and to better serve the Kings of Portugal. Their son Diogo de Barros would become the next administrator, followed by his first-born son. Administrators were also obliged to use the family name.

Entail foundation deed by which Cristóvão de Castro and his wife Joana Marinho founded an entail with all their assets, designating their daughter Isabel Soares de Castro to be its first administrator. She is present and agrees to this foundation. After their daughter's death, it should succeed her heirs, namely the eldest son or, in his absence, the eldest daughter. If she doesn't have children the entail will pass to Manuel Pereira de Castro, son of Cristóvão's brother, Manuel Pereira de Castro, and of Francisca de Abreu, or to heirs of Paio Gomes Pereira and Pedro Marinho Falcão, siblings of the institutors, who shall marry each other. The future bride or groom of the successor should incorporate the sixth part of their dowry into this entail. The successors were also obligated to give the "alimentos" to their siblings until they turned 18 years old. The institutors also declared that they were the "padroeiros" of the Monastery of São Bento de Monção, where they founded a chapel and possessed their graves. The administrator was obligated to order the celebration of masses in this chapel for their and their parents' soul, paying for a chaplain. This entail is composed of a farm of Bemposta, with its houses, oil press, cattle houses, orchards and vineyards; others vineyards called “Penaboa”, “Pombal”, “Veiga da Lagoa”, “Regueiro”, “Brejoeira”, “Ribeira” and “Cavaleiro”, on the outskirts of Monção. They also possessed some houses located Monção and "Seiradelo"; a crop field in the parish of Macedo and others called “Pedra da Rainha”, "Fundões", "Lamelas", "Lagoa", "Caldelas", "Sido" and "Salgueiro"; and the "herdades" of "Pedra”, "Portocavaleiro", “Testeiras”, “Lameiro do Trigal”, "Trigães”, “Tojeiro”, “Sidreiro”, “Lagoa”, “Cova do Barro”, “Salgueiro”, “Veiga de Valdosende”, “Paço” and "Cacheva".

Entail foundation deed by which Tomé Salema established an entail, stipulating the payment of the studies of his nephews Diogo and António de Salema at the University of Coimbra. The institutor also established the obligation to celebrate masses in the Church of Alcácer do Sal, using all his assets located in the same place and in Brasil, where he had some slaves.

Entail foundation deed of Francisco Mendes Pimentel. Entails a third of its assets to fulfill charges. He appoints Luís Coelho de Pimentel, his son, first administrator, to marry Mariana da Cunha, daughter of João Alves da Cunha Gusmão. The eldest son of this marriage was to succeed him. António de Pina Mascarenhas and D. Luísa Pimentel, his wife, nephews of the institutor, also annex assets to the entail established by their uncle, as did João Coelho de Sousa and D. Joana Luísa Coelho de Sousa, his sister, sons of the institutor.

Entail foundation deed by which Rui de Melo, do Conselho do Rei, and Helena de Mesquita, promise to marry their children, respectively D. Joana da Silva and D. António de Melo, and establish an entail for them with the marriage's dowry, which shall be employed in acquiring immovable properties. The entail shall pass to the successors of this marriage and will have its chapel in the convent of S. Domingos of Évora.

Entail foundation deed by which Gil Lourenço and his wife Joana Gonçalves entail their quintãs of São Miguel and Real with a perpetual pious obligation of three masses celebrated every year in the monastery of São Domingos of Guimarães. They appointed Gonçalo Lourenço, son of Leonor Afonso, to be the first administrator during his lifetime and, after his death, he should be succeeded by his first-born, male, legitimate son.

He appoints Jerónimo Mexia, his son, as first administrator, to whom his eldest son should succeed.

Entail foundation deed made by Duarte Gomes da Silveira in which he ordered, among several dispositions, the foundation of an entail and chapel of the invocation of Salvador do Mundo in the church of the Misericórdia of Paraíba's captaincy, with a perpetual pious obligation of four masses celebrated every week as long as the world lasted and one sung mass on the day of Nossa Senhora das Neves. He named his son in law António Barbalho Bezerra and his wife Joana Gomes da Silveira, daughter of the institutor, as first administrators of the entail during their lifetimes, and, after their deaths, the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. No administrator could ever marry with a another person of the so-called 'infected races', under the penalty of loosing the administration. He recomended that no administrator should ever rise his own children with wine, as a root of sin. All administrators should annex one third of their own reserved portions to the entail. The institutor also disposed that all administrators should bear the surname Silveira and the coat of arms of the Gomes and Bezerras, adding a motto beneath it with the words Verdade e Felicidade (truth and happiness) that should be present in all their seals, chairs, curtains.

Entail foundation deed by which D. Teodósio II, Duque de Bragança e de Barcelos, established an entail ("morgado da Cruz"), incorporating in it two relics, a public debt instrument of 5 contos de réis and houses and properties in Vila Viçosa, determining that its revenues had to support the celebration of 2 perpetual annual masses in his chapel. The entail would be transmitted to whoever inherited his house. The institutor describes his journey to Alcácer Quibir with D. Sebastião. He declares he established this entail with the same conditions as the ones founded by his father, D. João, and by his grandfather, D. Teodósio, previous possessors of his title, and to compensate the expenses his family incurred to save him from captivity in Africa.

Entail foundation deed by Afonso Domingues and Maria Domingues in Montemor-o-Novo, with a chapel in the church of Santa Maria do Açougue of the same town, donating all their assets in Montemor-o-Novo, Évora, Redondo, Alcácer, Arraiolos, Coruche, Lavre and other places to João Domingues, brother of Maria Domingues, who will administrate them as an entail, with the consent of João Afonso and Pedro Afonso, sons of Afonso Domingues. This entail will always be administrated by the lineage of Maria Domingues and João Domingues, her brother. This deed mentions another entail in Estremadura to the heirs of the lineage of Afonso Domingues.

Entail foundation deed by which André Soares, fidalgo da Casa do Rei e seu escrivão da Fazenda, and his wife, D. Maria Botelho, establish an entail with their third parts, consisting of houses and estates in Lisboa and other properties in the outskirts of the city. They designate their eldest son, Manuel Soares, as first administrator, and his descendants afterwards. The entail shall be associated to the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição which they established in the monastery of Santíssima Trindade of Lisboa, and to which was entailed a public debt instrument set in the Casa da Alfândega of Lisboa, with the obligation of a daily mass for their souls. The chapel would be administered by the administrators of the entail, but its properties were to be separated from it.
Manuel Soares is present, accepts the conditions of the entail and promises to entail his legitime to it.

Entail foundation deed by which António de Sousa de Macedo and D. Mariana de Lemercier, his wife, change clauses of a previous entail foundation deed issued on 1673-11-08. They establish an entail with houses in Lisboa, a farmstead in that city ("quinta de Nossa Senhora da Luz"), lands in Carnide, a rent (foro) in Azambuja, properties in Benavente and the captaincy of Ilha Grande de Joanes, Brasil, designating their son, D. Luís Gonçalo de Sousa de Macedo, Barão da Ilha Grande de Joanes, to administrate it. The institutors attach this entail to the chapel they had founded in the convent of Nossa Senhora de Jesus, where their bodies and those of their descendants would be buried and annual masses would be celebrated for their souls. D. Luís Gonçalo de Sousa de Macedo and his wife, D. Mariana de Távora, approved this deed.

Entail foundation deed by António do Prado and Maria Monteiro Cardoso, his wife, and donation of the same to Francisco Monteiro Cardoso, their brother. The related assets are entailed, reserving their usufruct while the founders are alive, and the charges are established, celebrated in the hermitage of São João that existed in their farm of São João de Vale de Antas, which had to be repaired. After the death of Francisco Monteiro Cardoso and Leonor Henriques, his wife, the entail was to be inherited by Francisco Soeiro, their eldest son.
It contains a letter of attorney of Maria Monteiro Cardoso so that António do Prado, her husband, can represent her (dated 1622-11-14).

Entail foundation deed by Isabel Cabral, widow of João Álvares de Caminha, with the remaining part of the available portion of her husband and with her own available portion, composed of her houses in Rua Nova, in Lisbon, which will be the entail's head, and her farmstead (quinta) in Romeira, in the outskirts of Almada, to her son, Manuel de Caminha, appointed as her successor. The institutor also orders that the entail's administrators will administer the chapel she built in the monastery of S. Francisco of Lisbon, with the pious obligation of a perpetual daily mass for her and her husband's soul. Manuel de Caminha was present and accepted this institution, being mentioned also as institutor.

Entail foundation deed by which Rui de Pina, fidalgo da Casa do Rei, cronista-mor do reino and guardião da Torre do Tombo, and his wife, Catarina Vaz de Gouveia, establish an entail with the third part of their properties. They bequeath it to their son, Fernando de Pina, fidalgo da Casa do Rei, and his descendants. They also establish a chapel in the new cathedral of Guarda, with invocation of the Holy Spirit, where they shall be buried and to where the bodies of their parents shall be transfered, with the obligation of eight annual masses for their souls, the souls of their parents, and the souls of D. João II, his wife D. Leonor, their son D. Afonso, and D. Manuel I. If Fernando de Pina dies without descendants, the entail shall be bequeathed to one of his sisters, Leonor de Pina, or, if she also dies without descendants, to their other sister, Isabel de Pina, wife of Fernando Brandão. Fernando de Pina is present, and accepts the conditions.

Entail foundation deed by which Manuel Jorge establishes an entail with his third part, consisting of a public debt instrument in the Alfândega of Lisboa and properties in Lisboa, Loures, Cascais and Mafra. He establishes a daily mass for his soul in the chapel of Cristo Jesus in the cloister of the convent of S. Francisco de Xabregas, Lisboa. He appoints the eldest grandson of Isabel Ferreira and Pedro Cardoso, his daughter and son-in-law, as first administrator, and his successors afterwards.

Entail foundation deed by which Amador Rodrigues, mercador de sedas, and Maria de Castanheda, his wife, established an entail with the third part of their assets, including 3 houses in Lisboa. They designated Simão Rodrigues Castanheda, their youngest son, to become its first administrator. If he died before being able to administrate it, the entail would be inherited by Francisco Rodrigues Castanheda, his eldest brother. The future administrators were all obligated to support the celebration of 42 annual masses for the institutor's souls in the chapel of Jesus of the church of S. Julião of that city. They declared that their bodies had to be buried in that chapel.

Entail foundation deed by which Vasco Fernandes César and his wife, Inês Gonçalves Batavias, establish and entail with their third parts. They designate their eldest son, Luís César, as first administrator, and his descendants afterwards. They establish an obligation of two weekly masses and other annual masses in the chapel of Cinco Chagas de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo of the monastery of Santíssima Trindade, where they wish to be buried, to which they entail their houses in Lisboa. All the administrators of the entail must also succeed on the administration of the chapel established by Catarina Vaz, wife of Paio Lourenço, in the church of São Nicolau of Santarém, which they currently administered.

Entail foundation deed by which António de Melo and his wife Inês Leitão established an entail, appointing their son Nuno de Melo be its first administrator. He has due to order the celebration of masses in the Church of Nossa Senhora da Purificação de Bucelas and in the Ermida of São Nicolau, located in their farm in Bucelas. This entail is composed of a farm in Bucelas, with its houses, orchards, olive groves, vineyards and lands. The institutors also confirmed the fulfilment of Manuel Freire's chapel obligations and appointed their son to be its successor after their death.

Petition by which Bartolomeu Marchione and Gil Correia, executors of Pedro Paulo Marchione's will, ask the Juiz ordinário de Almada to validate it. They declare that due to the fact that Pedro was extremely ill, he was unable to make a complete will chart. Thus, he stated what were his final wishes, in front of 9 witnesses, asking Bartolomeu and Gil to take note of it. Pedro ordered that the third part of his assets should be delivered to his daughter, Ana Arrais de Mendonça, obligating her and her successors to celebrate masses for his soul in the chapel of Jesus of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa, where his body should be buried. Followed by an undated dispatch issued by Francisco Caldeira Freire.

He entails half of his own reserved portion to the chapel, and added six weekly masses obligation to be orayed at the chapel in the church of Nossa Senhora da Graça, in Olinda.

Will of Fernando Martins Evangelho, o Moço, by which he expresses his wish to be buried in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa, in the chapel he built. He appoints his natural son, Afonso Martins Evangelho, legitimized by king D. Afonso V, as his universal heir. He also bequeaths him and his descendants an entail of his properties, with the obligation of a daily mass and five sung masses in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa, and two annual masses in the church of Atouguia da Baleia, where his parents were buried. If his lineage is extinguished, the administrator of the entail shall be chosen by the merchants of the confrarias of Sto. Espírito and S. Francisco of Lisboa. He also makes a donation to a supposed natural daughter, named Violante, for her marriage, even though it was against his will.
Followed by notices dated between 1851 and 1853 mentioning the subrogation of properties belonging to this entail.

Will by which Leonor Fernandes, Lourenço Eanes' widow, designates Afonso Taveira, her grandnephew, Pedro Taveira's son, to administrate the chapel she and her husband established in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. She entails to it her houses in Rua Nova, a farmstead (quinta) in Camarate and lands in Alcolena, determining that the chapel's future administrators must pay, each year, 3 800 reais brancos to that convent to support the pious obligations and give olive oil to light a lamp. They are also obligated to give to the convent's infirmary 200 reais brancos and to prepare a feast for the prisoners of the royal prison, every year.
She donates an olive grove in S. Lázaro to João de Santiago, obligating him and his successors to give, each year, olive oil to light a lamp of her chapel in the convent of S. Domingos.
The testator also bequeaths lands (casal) located near the bridge of Alcântara to her nephew, Rui da Grã, which should be passed to his descendants with the obligation of celebrating an annual mass in the church of S. Mamede of that city for the souls of Leonor Fernandes' parents.
She declares that her body should be buried inside her chapel, where her husband and children lie.

He appoints his wife, Beatriz Pires, as first administrator of his chapel and hospital. After her death, the entail shall pass to her brother, Álvaro Pires, or, if he is deceased, to his wife, Branca Afonso, sister of the institutor.

He also refers his ancestors Jorge Lopes and Lourenço Mendes who are buried in this chapel and orders a set of pious obligations to be perpetually accomplished for his soul, leaving as payment half of the assets he owns with his wife. Maria Eanes will be the first administrator. After her death, the administration should be delivered to her brother-in-law, João Vana, or to his wife, and afterwards to their son, Gaspar Vana. The options and conditions for the entail’s transmission are further detailed. Followed by an approval deed (dated 1505-05-29) and an opening deed of that will (dated 1505-08-11).

Henrique de Portugal, established an entail, with the obligation to celebrate masses in the Convent of Santa Maria de Jesus de Vale de Figueira, in Arrábida, that was founded by her husband's parents. The institutor referred that her and her husband had the "padroado" of this Convent and that they moved and rebuilt it in another place. She wanted that the "padroado" would be always incorporated into this entail and that the successors should give to the friars of this convent some alms for their subsistence. The institutor designated her grandson D. Álvaro and his heirs to be its successors and to be buried in this Convent. If he died childless, it should succeed the other heirs of her son D. Manuel. This entail is composed of a farm of "Fonte do Marno", a "casal" on the outskirts of Torres Vedras, lands on the outskirts of Sintra, houses and a public debt instrument of 30 000 réis.

Will made by Cristóvão Vaz and his wife Ana Fernandes in which they ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual obligation of a weekly mass celebrated in the chapel that they were building in the mother church of the island of Santa Maria, Açores, devoted to Santo André, where their bodies should be buried. They ordered specifically that only their bodies should be buried on that chapel, where a vault with their names should be placed. They named one another to administer the entail after the first of them died. After both of them were deceased the administration should be transmitted to their daughter Maria Velha, continuing, preferably, on the eldest male heir. If Maria died without heirs, the administration should be transmitted to her sister Joana Fernandes with the same conditions. If none of them had children of their own, a royal magistrate should appoint an "homem bom" to administer it. Cristóvão Vaz Velho mentioned that his father Francisco Vaz Velho had appointed him administrator of his entail, and that he named his daughter Maria Velha to succeed him on the administration.

After the death of João, the administration would be handled to his son Francisco Ribeiro and his descendants with the same condition. The second entail would be composed of other houses, vineyard and olive grove in Portalegre, would have a perpetual obligation of thirteen masses celebrated every year. To administrate it, Helena Martins named her sister Isabel Ribeira and her daughter Beatriz after her death, and from there on the succession should continue on the eldest heir. If Beatriz died without children, the administration would be handled to her sister Isabel Ribeira, with the same conditions, or, alternatively, to her brother José and his descendants.

The testator also bequeaths his assets in Azambuja to Afonso, Gonçalo Eanes and Catarina Afonso's son, and his properties in Vale do Paraíso and Aveiras de Fundo to Diogo, Afonso's brother, obligating both to maintain a chaplain in the church of Azambuja, who would celebrate annual masses for their grandparents' souls. Will of Cecília Francisco. She orders her body to be buried in the church of Santiago da Cividade, in front of the altar of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, where her parents and siblings were interred. As a single woman with no forced heirs, she was free to dispose of her possessions. Her intention was to entail her estates in Braga and its outskirts in a chapel. The chapel had the perpetual obligation of celebrating 53 masses a year, 47 in the church of Santiago da Cividade and six in the altar of São Pedro in Braga Cathedral. The first administrator of the entail was to be her nephew, Francisco da Costa, who was to be succeeded by his next of kin. Cecília's will was to be recorded in the "Livro das Capelas" of the Juízo dos Resíduos and in the "Tábua" of the Church of Santiago.

Will made by Mateus Álvares, lavrador, in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual obligation of two masses celebrated every year on the altar of S. Mateus Evangelista, in the church of Espírito Santo, in Arronches, where his body should be buried, in a grave with a marble vault. He ordered that the first administrator should make an ornated image of S. Mateus Evangelista to be placed in this altar, where a scallop should also be painted in gold. To administrate it, he appointed António, son of Fernando Vaz Porcalho, with the condition that he would became a clergyman, and after the death of António, the succession should always continue on the eldest male relative that was not a clergyman. All administrators were obliged to annex half of their own reserved portions to the entail.

He named his brother Gonçalo Rodrigues de Sousa as first administrator of the entail and after his death it should be annexed and administrated by the same administrator of the entail founded by his uncle Tomás Tavares, continuing the succession on his father's bloodline. However, if his father's bloodline became extinguished, then the entail should be no longer annexed to his uncle's entail, and henceforth administrated by his brother Francisco de Azevedo or any of his children. He ordered that all administrators should bare the surname "Tavares".

However, if Francisco died without descendants, the administration should be transmitted to the Misericórdia of Ponta Delgada.

Domingos and providing olive oil to light a lamp in the church of S. Maria Madalena of that city, each year. He appoints his eldest son, Damião Botelho Chacon, to be the entail's first administrator and demands his wife, D. Francisca Pereira, to incorporate in it the third part of her assets, as she had promised. The testator declares that his remains should be interred inside the chapel of S. João Baptista.

Isabel de Lencastre left the third part of her assets to the Duquesa, determining that, after her death, it should be delivered to the convent of Santa Ana of Leiria, where she would establish a chapel. The nuns of that convent had to celebrate one or two perpetual daily masses for her soul and for the souls of her relatives, depending on what was the value of the income she left them. She designated the Provincial da Ordem de S. Domingos, the vicar and the prioress of the convent of Santa Ana to administrate her chapel. The testator declared that her body had to be buried in a shallow grave in that convent. Followed by a declaration deed issued on 1615-04-30.

They named one another administrator of the entail after the first one was dead with the condition of appointing one of their seven children to succeed on the administration with the same condition.

Will made by Gomes da Noia, the elder, and his wife Catarina Fernandes Valente in which they ordered the foundation of an entail composed of all their properties, including the farms of Chuva Chove, Ribeirão dos Pássaros, Pico da Antónia, with their sugar mill and plantations, four mares, four mules and also thirty enslaved persons. Over all these assets they have imposed a perpetual pious obligation of twenty masses celebrated every year and one more sung mass celebrated in the octave of All Souls Day, with bread and wine offer, and candles over their graves. To administrate the entail, they named Gomes da Noia, the younger, nephew of Gomes da Noia, during his lifetime, and, after his death, the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. The institutor's disposed that no demoniac, destroyer or fool could never receive the administration, and all administrators should be obliged to bare the surnames Noia and Fernandes, or otherwise lose the administration. They have also disposed that the administrators should keep a book, recomending that they should be similar to the notary's record books, for the record of the entailed properties, including the enslaved people, with all their named noted, and if any slave perished, fled or was sold for desobedience, the administrator would be obliged to replace him or her in equal number. They called the Provedor das Capelas to take account of the administration and to surveil this record book, receiving an stipend worth 2.000 réis for each time they took account.

Will by which Fernando Velho, Cavaleiro Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, ask the executors of his will to establish a chapel devoted to the Madre de Deus on his behalf, appointing his father-in-law, Diogo de Palma, to be its first administrator. He determines that after the arrival of the carracks returning from Índia, his father-in-law should receive 14 quintaladas of ginger, 2 000 cruzados and 60 000 réis of wage, which were owed to him, and apply them in the acquisition of properties to be entailed to the chapel. Since he has no heirs, all of his patrimony will be used to help hospitals, misericórdias, orphans and to save captives. Followed by a list of the entailed assets.

Will made by padre Gaspar Veloso, ordering, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual obligation of three masses a year, celebrated in Christmas Eve, by the Irmandade do Santíssimo Sacramento of Vila da Praia, Graciosa island, and for that, the brotherhood should receive 2 moios of wheat from the administrator of the entail. The administrator should also give 2 alqueires of wheat to five poor persons every year, as long as each of them prayed a rosary for his soul. To administrate this entail he named Gaspar Veloso and Manuel Rodrigues. If Manuel Rodrigues died first, the entail should be administrated by Catarina Velosa and her brother, and her sons after her. If she died without heirs, her sister Ana Velosa should inherit the administration. Gaspar Veloso and Manuel Rodrigues, or Catarina and Ana in his place, should administrate the chapel together during their lives, and by the death of both, the last one should appoint the eldest son or daughter at his choice.

If João de Ornelas died without children, the administration should be transmitted to his sister Isabel de Ornelas. The administrators should retain1/4 of the entail's income and give, from the other 3/4, perpetually, 300 réis in every year to the Confraria do Rosário, that would be spend in the celebration of as many masses as possible. He also ordered the construction of a chapel of the invocation of the Salvador, in the convent of S. Francisco.

Will made by João Luís Teixeira and his wife Maria Pereira de Sousa in which they ordered, among several other dispositions, the foundation of an entail with a perpetual mass obligation of one chapel of masses for each of them, celebrated in the chapel of Santo Agostinho, in Angra. They also ordered two perpetual oitavários of masses in memory of the mother and brother of Maria Pereira de Sousa, Ângela Pereira and Gernão Pereira Haramento, fulfilling their wills. They named one another to administrate the entail after the first of them was dead, and after both of them were dead, they named their nephew Manuel de Barcelos Evangelho, and after his death, in this order, Mateus de Távora, Simão de Aguiar Fagundes and Manuel de Barcelos Machado, with the condition that one should only succeed after the death of the previous. After all of them were dead, the administration should be transmitted to the closest relative of João Luís Teixeira, and after this relative was dead, it should be given to the closest relative of Maria Pereira de Sousa. After all administrators appointed were dead, the administration should return to the eldest son of the closest relative of João Luís Teixeira, that would always be succeeded, preferably, by the eldest male heir. If any administrator ever married with new cristãos-novos or hebrew descendants, he or she should be immediately deprived from the administration. They also ordered that every administrator should appoint a pious woman to pray a rosary everyday in honour of N. Sra. da Conceição, as long as the world lasted, receiving an alm worth 560 réis in every year.

She appointed her nephew António Pereira Botelho to be the first administrator and after his death the succession would continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. If he died without descendants, the administration should be transmitted to Manuel Pereira Botelho, also nephew of the institutor, or, if he had no children, to the Misericórdia of Ponta Delgada. All administrators should bear the surname "Botelho" or otherwise lose the administration of the entail. She excluded illegitimate children of the administration and disposed that convicts on the crime of lese-majeste should lose the administration 20 hours before the commitment of the crime. Estêvão, located on the mother church of Angra, Terceira island, where her body should be buried. She named her children Serafina and Estêvão Borges to administrate the entail during their lifes, as long as each of them administrated it for two years. After both of them were deceased the entail should be administrated by the children of her daughter Catarina da Silveira, as long as they alternate on the administration in every two years. And if she had no children, the entail's administration should be given to the descendants of her son Francisco do Carvalhal with the same conditions. She disposed that the entail's administration could not be given, in any circumstances to the heirs of João Dias do Carvalhal, once he was very wealthy and all of his brothers were not. In case of the extinction of her bloodline, the entail should be given to her nephew Manuel do Rego Borges or the Misericórdia of Angra.

Will by which Joana Pacheco declared that she and her husband, Estêvão da Gama, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, agreed to establish a chapel in the church of Salvador in Elvas, where their bodies would be buried. A daily perpetual mass had to be celebrated in that chapel in perpetuity. Those pious obligation would be supported with the revenues of houses that the institutors owned in that city. The testator appointed Maria da Gama, her daughter, to administrate it, determining that she would be succeeded by her son, Estêvão da Gama. Followed by an approval deed (1545-07-2[7], fl. 88).

His niece Maria and her descendants were named to administrate the second entail. The first entail was trusted to his niece Ângela Ribeira and her descendants. If the bloodline of any of them would become extinguished that administration should be transmitted to the Misericórdia of Guimarães.

Will of António do Prado, son of Cristóvão do Prado, ordering his grave in the chapel of Santo Ildefonso, in the church of the College of Nossa Senhora da Graça of Coimbra, which had been instituted by doutor Afonso do Prado, his grandfather. He instituted a chapel, appointing Francisco Monteiro Cardoso, his brother-in-law, as administrator. If the institution maintained itself, it would remain as stated in this document. If revoked, the assets would be entailed to the chapel of Santo Ildefonso, in the College of Graça, and to the hermitage of São João Batista, located in the Quinta de Valdança, on the outskirts of Podentes, with charges. The administration of both would belong to the reitor and priests of the College of Nossa Senhora da Graça, who nominates their executors.
This is followed an approval deed (dated 1634-01-12).

Will made by João Rodrigues Faleiro and his wife Catarina Santa, ordering, among other dispositions, the foundation of a chapel in the convent of São Francisco, in Angra, Terceira island, where their bodies should be buried, with a perpetual obligation of a weekly mass celebrated in the hermitage of São João das Almas. They named their daughter Maria Faleira and their son in law Guilherme Moniz Barreto as first administrators of the entail and their eldest son after them, preferably the male over the female.

Will by which Domingos Afonso de Pimentel and his wife Beatriz Cabeceiras wanted to be buried in the Church of São Sebastião in Ponta Delgada. They entailed their third and left some lands of Cerrado da Forca, in Cruz do Fadigas and in Rosto de Cão, to Lucas de Resende and António Afonso, and to Bartolomeu de Frias and his wife. They also left some rents from land to Nuno Gonçalves, their son, and Luís Leite with the pious obligation of a half chapel each one (or two) of them. To all of them the testators establish some succession rules. Will aproved in 1560-09-29.

Will made in Portalegre by Catarina Fernandes Moutosa, in which she ordered the foundation of two entails. The first entail would have a perpetual pious obligation of eight masses celebrated every year on the church of Espírito Santo, naming Francisco Nunes to administrate it during his lifetime and, after his death, the succession should always continue, preferably, on his eldest male heirs. The second entail would have a perpetual pious obligation of one mass celebrated every year on the church of Espírito Santo, naming her husband Matias Durão as first administrator during his lifetime, and, after his death, the administrator, who would also be the chaplain, would be elected by Vigário-Geral of the Bispado.

Will made in Portalegre by Maria Valente in which she ordered the foundation of an entail with a perpetual pious obligation of two masses celebrated every year as long as the world lasted. She named her husband João de Almeida da Silveira as first administrator during his lifetime, and after his death, he would be succeeded by Diogo Camelo, godson of the institutor, and from there on the succession should always continue on his descendants.

Will by which D. Maria Nogueira, widow of Bento de Andrade Pimentel, expresses her wish to be buried in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Luz in Portalegre, which she founded with her husband. She annexes her reserved portion, consisting of four estates, to the entail founded by her father Estêvão Nogueira. She also establishes an entail with the remaining part of her properties, to be annexed to her father's with a perpetual obligation of five annual masses. She names her son Manuel de Andrade as first administrator of this new entail and also as successor on her father's entail, following all the succession clauses disposed by Estêvão Nogueira. She also disposed that all future administrators should henceforth use the surname Andrade Nogueira, and would be obliged to annex assets worth 20 000 réis to the entail, declaring expressly that she wished all administrators of the entail to be "very rich in order to make many services to God and to the poor people".

Will by which Ana Ribeiro Ferraz, wife of António Pereira Vinagre, expresses her wish to be buried in the cathedral of Portalegre. She establishes an entail composed of farmlands and houses she possessed, with a perpetual obligation of ten masses celebrated every year. The institutor named João Pereira Vinagre, her stepson, as first administrator during his lifetime, with the condition that he would become a clergyman and, after his death, he would be succeeded by his brother António Pereira Vinagre and from there on the succession should continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. The administrators would be obliged to give two alqueires of oil to the brotherhood of Nossa Senhora do Rosário in order to maintain a lamp perpetually lit on this chapel.

Will of Isabel Tavares de Sousa, wife of Baltasar Pereira de Castelo Branco, expressing her wish to be buried in the main church of Arronches and bequeathing the remaining of her assets to her husband with the pious obligation of one daily mass for a year and a sung mass in the days of Nossa Senhora and Todos os Santos, while he is alive. After the death of her husband should succeed in these assets his eldest and legitimate male son or, if he has not legitimate offspring, Maria Soares, the testator's sister, who should establish a chapel, with other pious obligations in Lent and Advent.

Estêvão de Faro, her son, as heir and administrator. If there is no heirs of her bloodline, the administrator of her brother's entail, João Álvares de Caminha. She also orders that this entail foundation should have the same clauses and conditions as the entail of João Álvares de Caminha.

Will made by Francisco Álvares, cavaleiro da Ordem de Avis, in which he ordered, among other dispositions, the foundation of an entail composed of several properties in Nisa, with a perpetual pious obligation of two trinitarians of masses celebrated every year and one mass celebrated in every feast of the Virgin Mary, as long as the world lasted. All these masses should be celebrated over his grave on the mother church of Nisa with the prayers inclina Domine and Deus que nos patrem et matrem et Filius Deus said in every mass, accompanied by organ music. To administrate it he named his brother Domingos Álvares, with the condition that he would appoint one of his children to succeed him with the same conditions. The administrators should arrange two separate books, one for the record of this will and of all entailed properties and the other for the record of the pious legacies, that would be subjected to regular account by the Ouvidor do Mestrado de Avis or the Provedor das Capelas or the local magistrates of Nisa.
