Dowry deed

Dowry deed by which D. Violante Ribeiro donates as a dowry to her son, António Ribeiro de Barros, on his marriage to D. Francisca Borges de Meneses, the entail established by her parents, which she inherited after her brother's death. She annexes to it her farmstead of Pêra-Manca, in Évora. She also establishes its pious obligations, which her parents had left to their heirs' choice, to be prayed in its chapel in the convent of Salvador of Évora. António Ribeiro de Barros and D. Francisca Borges de Meneses, represented by Gabriel de Almeida de Vasconcelos, accept the dowry conditions.
Followed by a letter of attorney by D. Francisca de Borja de Meneses, dated 1645-03-15.

Dowry deed by Geraldo Vaz de Carvalho endowed his niece Isabel de Gouveia do Vale to marry with Filipe Botelho de Aragão. The dowry consisted of all his assets composed of houses, vineyards, lands, olive groves and olive oil press located in Monsanto and its outskirts, with the obligation to celebrate masses in the Church of São Salvador de Monsanto.

Dowry deed for wedding of Eliseu Borges de Figueiredo and Maria do Avelar, given by Feliciana Ribeiro and Francisco Pereira Rato, brothers of Maria do Avelar. For the dowry, Feliciana Ribeiro and Maria do Avelar, donated a chapel that they had instituted, to which they had entailed various assets, to fulfill the charges, as stated in a previous chapel foundation deed, dated 1610-09-11, adding, at that time, other properties and charges. If Maria do Avelar died without children, Feliciana Ribeiro could appoint the administrator she wanted, preferably Isabel do Avelar, sister of both. After Isabel do Avelar, the succession would take place as stated in the chapel foundation deed.

Dowry deed in which padre Manuel Fernandes Vitória ordered the foundation of an entail and simultaneously endowed Francisco de Machado Faria with several properties in Rabo do Peixe and Sete Cidades, in S. Miguel Island, donated to him on the occasion of his marriage with Mariana de Faria Vitória, his niece. He named them to be the first administrators of the entail and, preferably, their eldest male descendants after them, who would have the perpetual obligation of a daily mass in the chapel of N. Sra. da Vitória, in Relva, S. Miguel island, always celebrated by a relative. The administrators would also be obliged to support the costs of the festivities in honour of N. Sra. da Vitória during 21 years. Every administrator should bare the surname "Vitória" or, otherwise, lose the administration. No clergyman or convict on the crime of lese-majeste could inherit the administration. If the bloodline of the first administrators was ever extinguished, the entail should be transmitted and annexed to the entail founded by António Lopes de Faria.

Dowry deed by Jorge Gonçalves Pereira, priest the church of São Pedro de Frescainha, by which he gave estates in that same parish and in São Julião dos Passos, to Ana Pereira, daughter of Fernando Pereira do Lago, to her husband António Pereira and to their offspring. These properties were associated with the obligation to celebrate masses for the soul of Jorge Gonçalves Pereira. The couple would hold the entail during their lifetime and would have the power to appoint one of their children as their successor or, in the absence of a heir, another person.

Dowry deed by which Manuel Carrilho de Matos donates as an entail several rural properties in the outskirts of Castelo de Vide, Fronteira and Avis, to Nicolau de Matos Leitão and D. Antónia de Sequeira, his wife. After the death of Nicolau de Matos Leitão, the administration should pass to a son of his choice, and the same would happen in the following generations. If descendants were lacking, a recolhimento should be founded, invoking Senhora da Piedade, in the place of Mealhada, on the outskirts of Castelo de Vide.

Dowry deed made in Portalegre in which Fernando Aires Delicado endowed his son Gaspar Caldeira de Castelo Branco with an estate named Herdade d'Abreu in Portalegre's district, on the occasion of his marriage with Mariana Chamisa, who lived in Valença, kingdom of Castille, thereby ordering the foundation of an entail with a perpetual pious obligation of one mass celebrated every year as long as the world lasted. This entail would be administrated by future husband and wife and their heirs, preferably the eldest male. All administrators were obliged to use the surname Aires or otherwise lose the administration.

Encargo: uma missa anual ofertada com um pão, vinho e uma candeia. Capela imposta numa fazenda defronte da porta principal da Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Piedade dos Canhas e que posteriormente o capitão João Fernandes de Linhares comprou a Manuel Gomes Barreto, bisneto da instituidora, conforme as notas inscritas na folha de rosto do processo.
Em 1780 procede-se ao sequestro de uma fazenda defronte da porta principal desta Igreja, pertencente a Álvaro Francisco de Ornellas Linhares que declara não ser esta a fazenda obrigada porque antes a porta principal da Igreja “antes que se abatese” era virada para Oeste e atualmente para o sul.
Último administrador: Álvaro de Ornelas Linhares.

Contém algumas tomadas de contas e quitações da capela de Leonor Dias, a moça que possui o encargo de duas missas anuais, imposto em três fazendas no Porto Moniz, cujas confrontações constam do Termo de declaração inscrito na folha 10.

Dowry deed made by Frei António Rodrigues Preto for the marriage of his son António Rodrigues Preto to Josefa Maria, daughter of Domingos João. The dowry is given in the form of an entail with a perpetual pious obligation of six masses celebrated every year in the church of Redinha. After the death of the first administrators, the succession shall continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir.

Dowry deed by which Isabel Jorge, widow of Manuel Alves, donates her houses in Alfama to her great-niece, Maria Bernardes, daughter of her niece Graça Jorge and of João Bernardes, for her dowry, with the obligation that she and her descendants order four annual masses for her soul in the church of Santo Estêvão de Alfama. If Maria dies without successors the entail shall pass to her brother, Manuel, or to her other siblings. Maria Bernardes is represented by her father, João Bernardes, who shall administer the properties until she comes of age and takes a state. João Bernardes is present and accepts the donation.
Followed by an exemplification of a letter of possession of the houses by João Bernarrdes, in the name of his daughter, Maria Bernardes.

Dowry deed by which Inês Monteiro donates as a dowry half of her third part, consisting of houses and mills in Lisboa, to her granddaughter, Maria Monteiro, daughter of her deceased son Clemente Alves, with an obligation of three annual masses in the church of Santo Estêvão de Alfama, Lisboa. This entail shall pass to her descendants. If she dies without successors, it shall pass to one of her sisters and their descendants.

Dowry deed by which António de Mesquita donates to his niece, D. Joana, daughter of his brother frei Pedro de Mesquita, and to her husband, D. António Lobo, three estates he possesses in Campo Maior, as an entail, with an obligation of two annual masses for his brother's soul in the cathedral of Elvas, in their grandparents' chapel. If they don't have children, the entail will pass to D. Joana's brother, Álvaro de Mesquita, and will always be in Pedro de Mesquita's lineage. D. António is present and accepts the obligations, the notary accepts in D. Joana's name.

Dowry deed by which Maria de Miranda, Sebastião de Ataíde Coutinho's wife, established an entail with all her assets, appointing her niece, Úrsula de Miranda, who was going to marry Diogo de Ataíde Coutinho, to administrate it and determining that its future administrators had to support the celebration of 18 annual masses for her soul. It had to be passed to the eldest daughter of the couple.
Sebastião de Ataíde Coutinho donated all his assets to his son, Diogo de Ataíde Coutinho, thus establishing another entail and obligating its future administrators to celebrate 18 annual masses for his soul. The entail had to be transmitted to the youngest son of the couple. Sebastião de Ataíde Coutinho also appointed his son to administrate the entail established by Inês de Ataíde and Pedro do Couto, the "Morgado dos Negros e Coroados".

Dowry deed by which Garcia de Castilho donates all his assets to Simão da Cunha, his second wife's nephew, in order to support his marriage to Brásia de Azevedo, stepdaughter of Gaspar Velho, Rei de Armas de Portugal. Thus, he establishes an entail with his farmstead in Unhos, his houses in Lisboa and rents (foros) in the outskirts of that city, obligating its future administrators to support the celebration of annual masses for the institutor's soul and the souls of his two late wives, Maria de Melgária and Guiomar Feio, in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição of the church of Santa Justa. After Simão da Cunha's death, the entail should be inherited by his eldest son.

Dowry deed by which Margarida Carreira established an entail, donating to her niece Margarida Carreira de Almada and her future husband Afonso Vieira the rents of some houses located in Lisboa. They were due to order the celebration of masses wherever they wanted and to give 15 000 réis to the slave Ana, for her livelihood. Her sister Isabel Carreira de Almada, mother of Margarida Carreira de Almada, also donated to the grooms some houses located in Lisboa. The grooms accepted the conditions and Afonso Vieira gave to his bride 500 000 réis in "arras".

Dowry deed by which Margarida de Lemos established an entail, donating to her niece Leonor de Lemos and her future husband, Doutor Gaspar Ferraz, two "herdades" called "Vale da Romeira" and "Barroquoreira" on the outskirts of Monsaraz, and half of a "casal" in Vila de Arruda. They were due to give to the Friars of the Monastery of Santo António, in Vila da Castanheira, some wine and oil, and 12 000 réis to Leonor's sister. It should succeed in this entail her niece's children and, if she died childless, this entail should be succeed by her closest kin. The grooms accepted the conditions and Gaspar Ferraz also gave to his future bride 500 000 réis in "arras".

Dowry deed by which Beatriz Soares, Diogo Fernandes' widow, donated houses in Cata-que-farás, Lisboa, and a part of the sugarcane plantation she owned in Ilha de S. Tomé, which produced 250 arrobas of sugar every year, to her niece, Filipa Soares, Pedro Soares and Beatriz Lopes de Segura's daughter. She and her descendants were obligated to support the celebration of 2 weekly perpetual masses and a mass each November, for the souls of her late husband and of her son, in the church of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires. Those properties could never be sold or exchanged for others. If her niece died without leaving descendants, the entail would be inherited by one of her brothers and sisters.

Dowry deed by which Margarida da Esperança endowed Maria Freire to get married to Bernardo Toscano de Vasconcelos, with the obligation to order the celebration of masses in the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, where her husband Francisco Toscano was buried. It should succeed in this entail the eldest son, or daughter, or the closest kin of her deceased husband in their absence. The grooms accepted the conditions of this dowry deed.

Dowry deed by which Mécia Fernandes, Jerónimo Carneiro's widow, donated 3 houses in Belém to her brother, Marçal Dias, who was about to marry to Maria de Lemos, obligating him and his successors to celebrate 2 annual masses for her soul in an unidentified church. Those houses would only be delivered to him after his sister's death. If he died before her, they would be inherited by one of his legitimate children. Bárbara Ribeiro, Mécia's sister, gave all her patrimony to her brother. Marçal Dias approved this deed.

Dowry deed by which Beatriz de Mesquita donated to her niece Ana de Melo a dowry to get married with Sebastião da Costa Valente, with the obligation to celebrate masses and to free some of her slaves. This entail composed of a farm called "da Landeira". By the death of the administrator Ana de Melo, it should be appointed her son or daughter, and after their death whomever they choose.

Donation deed by which Matias Gonçalves donates several properties, including salt pans, a vineyard and a pine forest, to António, son of Manuel Nunes and Luísa Martins, reserving the usufruct during his lifetime. The donation was made on condition that António became a cleric and fulfilled the donor's legacies. Otherwise, it would be for Maria, Antonio's sister. Among the legacies, he orders his grave in the church of São João Batista of Coruche, in the tomb of Leonor Gomes, his wife, as well as the fulfillment of charges. The next administrator must be the son of the previous one. Until António became a cleric, or Maria did not reach the age of majority, the administrator would be Luís Ferreira.

She also established an entail with a perpetual obligation of three masses celebrated every year, composed of a property in Severete, Alegrete, which would be administrated by her grandson Francisco during his lifetime and passed, after his death, to his eldest son.

Donation deed by Pedro Eanes Campelo to Lourenço Campelo for his marriage with Filipa Guimarães. With this donation, Pedro Eanes Campelo established an entail that was to remain in the possession of Lourenço and his descendants, to be transmitted through the first-born sons, excluding clerics, illegitimate children and people who had committed lese-majeste crimes. The head of the entail was to be the estate of Barca, in São Romão da Ucha, Prado. A perpetual obligation was imposed to celebrate 10 annual masses in the church where Pedro Eanes Cameplo decided to be buried.

Deed of donation from Father Gonçalo de Barros, parish priest of Santa Eulália de Godinhaços. Gonçalo states that in 1630 he built a hermitage dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in which he also placed two images of the Virgin. He outlined the properties that belonged to the chapel, which he had inherited from Briolanja Gonçalves. The chapel had the obligation of two annual masses, celebrated in December. The closest relative was to succeed and take over the administration. The deed of foundation was to be recorded in the "Registo Geral" of the Archdiocese of Braga.

Cristóvão was in China and sent 210.00 réis to institute a chapel under the invocation of Nossa Senhora da Salvação, with a weekly mass. Since the money was not sufficient to fulfill the institutor's will, António Fernandes bought and entailed more estates, in recognition of his uncle's good deeds.

Donation deed made by Francisco Vaz Morujo, his wife Isabel Vaz and Catarina Vaz Morujo, his sister, in which they donated some houses, lands and other properties to their son and nephew Manuel Vaz thereby ordering the foundation of an entail with a perpetual pious obligation of fifty masses celebrated every year as long as the world lasted in the church of S. Lourenço, in Portalegre, where their bodies should be buried. The only condition was that Manuel should become a clergyman within a year, administrating the entail during his lifetime and, after his death, he would appoint his sisters Catarina de Sena and Isabel das Montanhas, both of them nuns at Santa Clara's convent, to succeed him, and, after the death of Isabel or Catarina the last one alive would appoint a person to succeed on the administration.

ENCARGOS (ANUAIS): seis missas rezadas no convento de São Francisco, cinco por sua alma e uma pela do marido.
REDUÇÃO DE ENCARGOS: a sentença de redução, emitida em 1819-09-17 (f. 55 a 96), reduz as capelas administradas por D. Maria de Ornelas à pensão anual de 70.000 réis à Misericórdia do Funchal. Segue-se uns embargos a esta sentença, datados de 1826 (f. 111), da Misericórdia do Funchal e de Lisboa contra Aires de Ornelas e Vasconcelos.

Donation deed made in Arronches by Isabel Pavia de Sequeira in which she ordered the foundation of an entail composed of all her assets, henceforth donated to her nephew Pedro Barradas Zuzarte and his descendants after him with a perpetual obligation of fourty masses celebrated every year on the church of N. Sra. do Rosário of Arronches, where her body should be buried. If Pedro had more than one child, all of them would succeed on the administration, one after the other, and, if he had none, the administration would be handled to António Zuzarte, brother of the institutor with the same conditions. After her death, 1 800 reis of that money shall be given annually to the guardian of the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa, to order masses for her soul. Donation deed made by cónego Rafael Gomes in which he donated two farms and twenty enslaved persons to Marina Gomes, a girl that he raised in his home, and thereby ordered the foundation of a chapel with a perpetual pious obligation of two sung masses in every year. He named his grandson Luís Fernandes da Vega to administrate this chapel until Marina married, and from there on, she and her legitimate descendants would administrate this chapel. If Marina died without children, the administration would be handled with the same conditions to Francisco, son of his niece Maria Vieira and capitão Manuel Ledo. The institutor disposed that if any of the slaves that were entailed to the chapel died or were sold out, they should be replaced in order to always maintain twenty of them serving.

She adds to this obligation 10 more masses for her own soul. After the death of João de Bivar, the houses shall pass to licenciado Paulo Rodrigues Pinto, brother of Guiomar Fernandes, if he is still living. After his death, they shall pass to his daughter, Isabel, and to her heirs. João de Bivar is present and accepts this donation.

Donation deed in which Isabel Ribeiro appoints her son Brás Ribeiro to succeed in the entail founded by her late husband, Pedro Afonso, with all the conditions and pious charges established. The entail is composed of houses and an income of 2 000 réis. After the death of her son, the entail should be administered by a son or daughter he appoints and after that it should pass to the eldest sons or eventually to the eldest daughters, always being transmitted to the closest member of the family. If his generation comes to an end, the houses and their income must be delivered to the priests of the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo de Lisboa.
Isabel Ribeiro also donates to her son the remaining part of her husband’s third that he left her.

During the donor's life, he was obligated to give her, each year, a certain amount of wheat and olive oil. After her death, António Pais, his daughter and her successors would support, each year, the celebration of a mass for her soul in the church of S. Lourenço. António Pais accepted this deed.

Donation deed by which Afonso Esteves donates the estates he had on the outskirts of Évora and Vimieiro, which he received on the death of his father, to Maria Esteves, his mother, and to Lourenço Esteves and Mem Esteves, his brothers. After the death of his mother he was to be left to his brothers, and after the death of the first to the second. After the death of the second he was to remain with his eldest son. The administrators had to fulfill the determined charges, celebrated in the church of Santa Maria de Vimieiro. If any of his brothers wanted to establish a chapel in that church, the assets had to be attached to it.

He appoints the future bride and husband as first administrators of the entail with the condition that they would appoint one of their children or, if they had none, the closest relative of Maria de Chaves Torres, preferably a male one.

Donation deed of the third part of André Álvares Manuel's assets to Isabel Luís, his wife, after his death. Among these assets was the vegetable garden of the Chafariz, with its ferregials. After her death, he was to be left to Tomé Álvares, their son, who was to choose one of his daughters to succeed him. The donation is made in the form of a chapel, and the charges must be fulfilled in the church of Nossa Senhora do Bispo, in Montemor-o-Novo. He administered a chapel instituted by Bárbara André, to which an olive grove was attached, located on the site of Carregal, nominating Tomé Álvares, his son, to succeed him in that administration.

Donation deed by which Simoa Fernandes donated to Manuel Ferreira, mestre alfaiate, nephew of her son João Rodrigues, all the immovable goods she inherited from her deceased son. She also donated to her godson João Antunes, sapateiro, five lands in Sintra that she inherited from her husband Domingos Jorge with the obligation to order the celebration of masses for her soul.

The friars would also be responsible for repairing the railings that would protect their graves. The provincial of the order, the prior and friars of the convent accepted the terms of this deed.

João da Praça of Lisboa. It is mentioned that the houses could be sold, on the condition that their next owners continued to fulfil the pious obligations associated to them.

Donation deed by which Francisca Brás, Gonçalo Fernandes' wife, donates 1 000 cruzados to his daughter, Catarina, part of which is destined to become her dowry. Catarina must use half of that sum of money to buy properties, whose revenues shall support the celebration of an annual mass for her stepmother's soul. Subsequently, the entail should be inherited by Catarina's descendants. The donor also appoints her husband to be the executor of her will.

Donation deed by which Inês Lopes, Pedro João's widow, donates lands in Alenquer to her cousin, Maria Jorge, Hilário da Paz and Bárbara Jorge's daughter, obligating her to support the celebration of 18 annual masses in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. The entail should pass to Maria Jorge's descendants. If she does not marry and dies childless, it would be transmitted to her brother, Matias da Lapa.
Inês Lopes mentions that those lands linked to that pious obligation were bequeathed to her by Isabel Gonçalves, her aunt.

Nicolau of Lisboa, where her body should be buried. Pedro de Freitas approves the content of the donation.
