Chapel foundation deed

Chapel foundation deed by Doctor João de Coimbra, provisor in the Archbishopric of Braga. The founder declares that he had previously received permission from the King to acquire property to be incorporated into a chapel he had built in honour of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, next to the church of São João do Souto in Braga. His nephew, Cristóvão de Coimbra, would be the first owner and administrator of the chapel, to be succeeded by his first-born son, with the exception of clerics, illegitimate children and those who had committed lese-majeste crimes. The estates could not be leased to "fidalgos", "cavaleiros" or "oficiais do rei", but only to farmers and labourers. Every year, during the mass of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the chaplain would read the deed of foundation to keep the memory of the founder alive.

Chapel foundation deed by which Lourenço Martins instituted a chapel in Santa Catarina, determining which masses should be celebrated every year. He appointed Afonso Lourenço, who was either his brother or his son, as its first administrator. He would be succeed by his descendants. The institutor bequeathed a property in Requeixada to Francisco Esteves, declaring that he could transmit it to one of his children. After the death of one of his descendants, it would be entailed to the chapel.

Chapel foundation deed by which Estêvão Ferreira da Gama, fidalgo da Casa do Rei, and D. Mécia Pereira, his wife, entail their properties in Lisboa, Sintra, Cascais, Torres Vedras, Lourinhã, Atouguia and Óbidos. They establish an obligation of a daily mass in the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Egito of the convent of S. Francisco de Xabregas, Lisboa. They appoint their daughter, Violante Pereira, as administrator, and her successors afterwards.

Chapel foundation deed of Manuel Gonçalves Moreira, which he had done in the church of the monastery of Santo António of Viana [do Castelo] and where he wanted to be buried. He entails his houses, located in Viana do Castelo, on Rua de Santa Catarina, for the celebration of the charges. The administrator must be the eldest, legitimate son. In case of non-fulfillment of the charges, the administration would transfer to Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Viana.

Chapel foundation deed by which Maria Rodrigues Gralha established an entail, incorporating some houses located in Cacilhas. The institutor donated these houses, by a dowry contract, to her nephew João Rodrigues da Frota and her cousin Isabel Leonardes who, after her death, should succeed in chapel's administration. The administrators should nominate the son they wanted to succeed them in the administration. The pious obligations should be celebrated in the Church of São Paulo de Almada.

Chapel foundation deed by Beatriz Gouveia, Doutor Álvaro Vaz's widow, through which she establishes an entail with her farmstead (quinta) of Malvasia, in Sacavém, instituting the pious obligation of celebrating masses in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Humildade, in the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. She appoints her son, Pedro Álvares de Gouveia, as the entail's first administrator, after whose death it would pass to his offspring. Chapel foundation deed by Manuel Rodrigues by which he institutes a chapel in the mother church of Portimão. He appoints mestre Diogo de Almada, prior of the mother church of Portimão and the oldest beneficiado of that church, and the licenciado Henrique Martins Correia, to be his attorneys and administrators of the chapel. He met both in Santiago dos Cavaleiros in Guatemala. He appoints his nephew, son of his sister Maria Rodrigues, to be the chapel's chaplain; the children of Catarina Rodrigues, also his nephews, should succeed in the chapel’s administration, preferring the eldest; and after them the children of Leonor de Ribeira, also his sister.

Chapel foundation deed by Senhorinha Soares, widow of Afonso Vieira. Senhorinha had received from the convent of S. Francisco of Porto the altar of Saudação, located between the main chapel and the chapel of S. António, in the church of the aforementioned convent, in order to found her chapel. She appointed her nephew Manuel Soares, son of Simão Soares, as administrator, to be succeeded by the first-born son or, in the absence of a male heir, by the first-born daughter. If there weren't any relatives belonging to the "geração dos Soares", the succession would go to the relatives of her late husband.

Chapel foundation deed by which Baltasar Leite, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei and abade da igreja de S. Tiago da Carreira, established a chapel in the convent of S. Francisco of Porto, entailing to it a farmstead in S. Miguel de Cabreiros ("quinta de Cabreiros"), a house and mill in São Salvador de Castelões, rents (foros) in Aguiar de Sousa and part of a farmstead in Vila Caiz ("quinta dos Esporões"). He determined that the friars had to celebrate 24 annual masses for his soul and, in turn, he and his successors were obligated to give them, each year, 3 600 réis . After the institutor's death, the chapel would be administrated by his sister, Violante Mendes, widow of Jorge de Babo, and subsequently transmitted to one of the descendants of Beatriz Leite, their sister, and Manuel de Moura. The friars of the convent gave their consent to this deed

Chapel foundation deed by which Pedro Afonso Painho, mercador, and Catarina Vasques, his wife, established a chapel in the convent of S. Francisco of Porto. Their bodies would be buried in the altar of S. Pedro and annual masses had to be celebrated there. The institutors determined that the pious obligations would be supported with the revenues of houses on Rua dos Banhos, Judiaria and Campo do Souto. They appointed Vasco Pires, Pedro's illegitimate son, as its first administrator.

Chapel foundation deed by which Doutor Roque Pereira Tavares, representing himself and his wife, D. Francisca Rebelo, reached an agreement with the rector and officials of the College of Nossa Senhora da Graça of Coimbra to erect there a chapel, thus fulfilling the will of Simão Vaz de Camões, his wife's first husband. The institutor's remains would be deposited there as well as the bodies of his successors. Roque Pereira Tavares entailed properties in Montemor-o-Velho and olive groves in Coimbra to it. The subsequent administrators of the chapel were obligated to pay, each year, 24 000 réis to that college to support the celebration of a daily perpetual mass and to help maintain its state.
It is referred that Simão Vaz de Camões had initially ordered his wife to establish a chapel in the new church of the convent of S. Domingos of Coimbra, but since the construction of the building was not finished after 40 years, Roque Pereira Tavares and Francisca Rebelo decided to change the chapel location. Contains a copy of a letter of attorney.

Chapel foundation deed by Pedro Afonso Leiro and his wife Madalena Gonçalves. The couple lived in Olinda, in the captaincy of Pernambuco, but wanted to establish a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres in the church of São Pedro de Covelo, with a weekly and perpetual mass every Saturday in honour of the Virgin. To this end, they left 200,000 réis for the chapel, which had already been given to João Gonçalves. The income from the estates was to be divided into three parts: one third for the administrator, one third for the chaplain and the rest for the ornaments of the chapel. The couple also ordered a small safe to be placed in a recess in the wall, where the documents would be kept. The safe was to have three copies of its key: one for the administrator, one for the chaplain and one for the parish priest.

After her death, the administrator should be the closest kin of João Fernandes, following the established hierarchies of succession.

Chapel foundation deed by Álvaro do Porto de Pedroso, escudeiro fidalgo, and his wife Margarida Eanes. The document justifies the need to create entails as a way of avoiding partitions, favouring an heir who would preserve the memory of the founders and help his relatives. They decided to reserve their "terças", in which they incorporated the Barrosa manor, in the parish of Lanheses. They appointed their son Lourenço de Pedroso as the first administrator. The entail had the obligation of a weekly mass every Friday in the chapel of the mother church of Ponte de Lima, which had been built by Gonçalo do Porto, and of which the institutor was the administrator. They also imposed masses to be celebrated in the chapel of the Barrosa estate. Several obligations were imposed on the administrators: they had to acquire and entail lands in the vicinity of the Barrosa estate, and they had to use the surname of the founders, emphasising that this was the main reason for the foundation of the chapel, in memory of the people from whom they had received the estates.

Chapel foundation deed by padre Nuno Vaz de Sousa, by which he entails assets in Portalegre and the surrounding area, with a perpetual pious obligation of twelve masses celebrated every year in Portalegre. The institutor named Beatriz Delicado, his sister, as first administrator during her lifetime, as a dowry in return for the improvements he received from her. After her death, she would be succeeded by her son, preceding the male.

Chapel foundation deed by which Frei José de Lencastre and D. Luís de Lencastre, executors of D. Veríssimo de Lencastre's will, committed themselves to fulfil the legacies left by their deceased relative and established a chapel in the convent of S. Pedro of Alcântara in his honour, determining that their friars had to celebrate 4 daily perpetual masses. The chapel would be administrated by D. Luís, Conde de Vila Nova de Portimão, and by his descendants. They entailed to it a public debt instrument of 480 000 réis in Casa do Infantado. It is referred that D. Veríssimo died on 1692-12-12.

Chapel foundation deed by which Gaspar de Figueiredo, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, and Beatriz de Carvalho, changed the foundation deed they had made on 1569-09-14, entailing the majority of their properties to the chapel of S. João Batista in the church of S. Tiago of Besteiros, namely their farmstead ("quinta de Casal Dasco"). After the death of one of the institutors, the other one would have the responsibility of administrating the chapel and appointing a successor, who had to be one of their relatives. The future administrators had the obligation of supporting the celebration of 41 annual masses for the institutors' souls, to maintain a lamp alight during those celebrations and to add half of the third part of their assets to the chapel. If one of the administrators died without appointing a successor, he would be succeeded by his eldest son.

Chapel foundation deed by which D. Isabel, widow of Doutor António Correia de Sá, Corregedor da Corte, moved the chapel established by the fidalgos Fernando Correia and Beatriz Gonçalves de Aguiar, his wife, to the church of Santa Justa of Coimbra, fulfiling her late husband's wish. She committed herself to erect a new chapel in that church dedicated to S. João Batista, which would become a family mausoleum, and to furnish it with the necessary ornaments. The prior and beneficiados of that church would be responsible for celebrating 2 annual masses for the founders' souls.
The institutors had initially found the chapel in the convent of S. Francisco of Évora. Their successor, Duarte Sá, had been the first to change the chapel location, moving it to the mosteiro de Santa Cruz of Coimbra. With the King's approval, he had sold the entailed properties in Évora and bought assets in Coimbra to incorporate in the entail, namely houses in Rua de Santa Sofia and 2 olive groves in Maínça and Monte Olivete.

Chapel foundation deed by Pedro da Grã. The founder explains that the reason he decided to found the chapel was because of the benefits that masses bring to souls. For this reason, he established a chapel in the church of Santiago da Cividade, where perpetual masses would be celebrated. The first administrator was to be his brother Manuel da Grã, who had the power to appoint one of his relatives as his successor, preferring a man but accepting a woman. The founder bequeathed property to the chapel, but also left 1,000 cruzados to be used for the purchase of other properties. Two-thirds of the income was to be spent on pious obligations, such as masses and the marriage of orphans. The documents relating to the chapel were to be recorded in the "Livro das Capelas" of the Juízo dos Resíduos de Braga, to whom the institutior also demanded constant vigilance in the fulfilment of the pious duties. The administrator had to live in Braga and keep a key to the chapel. Two "tombos" of the chapel were made.

Chapel foundation deed by Gonçalo Barbosa. The institutor had previously built a chapel dedicated to São Gonçlo, which was located in Santa Maria de Ardegão, next to the house where he was born. Gonçalo Barbosa entailed all his possessions and established the rules of the institution: the succession would be by legitimate descent, appointing the son or daughter who was considered the most obedient and capable of managing the estates. The appointment of the second administrator and successor was postponed to the time when the founder was to make his will. In the absence of relatives, the administration was to go to the S. Marcos Hospital in Braga. In the same document, his nephew, Domingos Barbosa, priest of São Julião dos Passos, also entailed to the chapel the property he had inherited from his cousin, João Barbosa, of the church of São Salvador das Almas de Vilar.

Chapel foundation deed by which Diogo Mendes de Castro contracted with the priests of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz in order to be buried and to be obligated to the celebration of masses for his soul in that church. He appointed he and his wife to be its first administrators and after their death their son or daughter, or their nephew Diogo Mendes de Castro. This entail is composed of unspecified assets.

Chapel foundation deed by which D. Isabel de Castilho, widow of João Bernardes, escrivão dos Armazéns dos mantimentos de Lisboa, instituted a chapel, entailing to it the third part of his assets, which included a farmstead located near the Chafariz do Andaluz. The revenues of the entailed assets would support the celebration of a perpetual daily mass and another one prayed, every year, in All Saints' Day in the convent of S. Bento da Saúde of Lisboa, where her body would be buried. She appointed her brother, João Batista Santa Cruz, to administrate the chapel, allowing him to designate one of his children to succeed him. If he died without leaving descendants, the entail would be transmitted to the closest living relative or to a benefactor. The institutor declared that she had chosen her brother to administrate it because her only son had married against her will. Contains a copy of a petition and a licence.

Chapel foundation deed of the chapel of Santa Maria Madalena, instituted by D. Joana de Sá, in the church of the College of Nossa Senhora do Carmo of Coimbra. The chapel was purchased for 100 000 réis and the institutor undertakes to give, annually, 25 000 réis of interest to the college, to fulfill the charges and 2 000 to the chapel's building, entailing assets that provide these income. Both the foundress and her family were to be buried in the chapel. The college is prohibited from asking for a reduction in the charges and the institutor undertakes to decorate the chapel and buy all the necessary utensils.
It contains a letter of attorney of D. Joana de Sá to Manuel Fernandes (dated 1622-11-11), and a license granted by Frei Estevão de Santa Ana, provincial of the Order of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, for the institution of the chapel (dated 1622- 11-09). Following two consent deeds (dated 1622-11-13) by which D. Joana de Sá and D. Mécia de Carvalho da Silveira, her mother, agreed with the terms of the contract.

Chapel foundation deed of the chapel of Santo Alberto, instituted by Manuel Rodrigues de Abreu, in the church of the College of Nossa Senhora do Carmo of Coimbra. The chapel was purchased for 80 000 réis and destined for the institutor's tomb. He entails assets to fulfill the charges and decides to bind it in the form of a entail, to be administered by an administrator who fulfills the charges. He also undertook to decorate the chapel and appointed the licenciado Manuel de Aguiar da Fonseca as the first administrator to be succeeded by D. Luísa Pereira Pantoja, his wife, and after his death, Manuel de Aguiar Pereira, their grandson. If the descendants were missing, the administration would transfer to the College.
It contains the license granted by Frei Luís de Miranda, provincial of the Order of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, to institution the chapel (dated 1664-12-17).

Chapel foundation deed of Rui Lopes de Magalhães' chapel, located in the College of Nossa Senhora da Graça of Coimbra. The chapel is intended for the grave of the institutor and his family, and must be administered by the eldest son or another person appointed by the administrator. The administrator had to give, annually, 42 000 réis to the College, to fulfill the charges and maintenance of the chapel, entaiking up assets for this purpose.
It contains a license of Frei João de Abranches, provincial of the Order of Hermits of Santo Agostinho, for the institution of the chapel (dated 1618-02-02).

Chapel foundation deed by which Nuno Álvares, cidadão do Porto, and Maria Dias, his wife, established a chapel in the convent of S. Francisco of Porto, determining that, every year, a certain quantity of wheat (20 alqueires), taken from their farmstead in Santa Maria do Vilar ("quinta do Bailouro"), had to be given to that institution to support perpetual pious obligations for their souls. The chapel, which had been erected near the convent's cloister, would also be used as a mausoleum by the institutors' family. They designated their son-in-law, Diogo Brandão, to administrate it.

Chapel foundation deed by João Dias Leite, by which he decided to institute a chapel in the newly built church of Santa Cruz. He appointed his nephew Teodoro Leite as administrator. He and all the administrators had several obligations, namely to be members of the Brotherhood of Santa Cruz and to use the family coat of arms. Succession would pass primarily through first-born sons, excluding illegitimate children. A copy of the deed of foundation was to be inserted in the Livro das Capelas and another in the archives of the Brotherhood of Santa Cruz.

Chapel foundation deed of Alexandre Barroso Pereira, fidalgo da Casa do rei e moço do Guarda-roupa do rei, and Catarina Palau de Cardenes, his wife, by which they entailed all their assets, with the pious obligation of 40 annual masses in the hermitage of Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso, located in S. Romão, in the outskirts of Alverca. Among the properties which they incorporated in the entail were houses in Lisboa and a farmstead (quinta) in the outskirts of Alverca do Ribatejo. The first administrator of the entail should be the surviving spouse, after whose death would succeed Luís Pereira Barroso, son of Alexandre Barroso Pereira's first marriage.

Chapel foundation deed by which capitão Miguel Luís Peleja and his wife, Domingas Nunes, revoke the previous contracts they had made with the Irmandade do Espírito Santo of the hermitage of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios de Alfama, dated 1667-04-14, 1669-03-14 and 1669-10-26. They establish a daily mass for their souls in the altar of Jesus of that hermitage, to which they entail their properties, including houses in Alfama which already had other obligations of masses to the church of S. Miguel de Alfama. They designate capitão Rafael Nunes da Silveira, nephew of Domingas Nunes, as first administrator, with capacity of appointing the next one. If he doesn't appoint a successor, he shall be succeded by his bastard daughter, D. Mariana, and her descendants. They obligated themselves to give to the nuns a public debt instrument of 15 000 réis in Almoxarifado do Porto, with the obligation to celebrate masses for their souls. The successors of this entail should spend 60 000 réis in ornaments and on the chapel's works.

Catarina de Sampaio Borges established a chapel, entailing to it a lease in Vila Nova de Anços ("Prazo do Campo da Mata") and determining that its revenues would support the celebration of a weekly perpetual mass for Pedro Borges Pessoa's soul, wherever its administrators desired. If her husband, António de Macedo Pereira, decided to erect a chapel inside his farmstead in Coimbra ("quinta de Verride"), the annual masses should be celebrated in it. She designated her stepson, Roque de Macedo Pereira Sampaio, to administrate it. When the time came, he would be succeeded by one of his sons.
António de Macedo Pereira and Catarina de Sampaio Borges also incorporated the improvements they had made in the farmstead of Verride in the entail administrated by António and commited themselves to annex to it other properties they would buy in the next 2 years. They appointed Roque de Macedo Pereira Sampaio to administrate that entail, obligating him and his successors to celebrate 12 annual masses for their souls.
The institutors decided that the chapel and that entail should always be administrated by the same person, after Roque's death.

Chapel foundation deed by which Beatriz Duarte de Oliveira, Jorge Leitão's widow, entailed 40 000 réis of interest to the chapel she had established in the convent of Nossa Senhora da Rosa of Lisboa and 16 000 réis of interest to the chapel her late husband founded in that convent, which she administrated. She appointed Padre António de Sequeira to be the chaplain of her chapel. The institutor designated Francisco de Morais de Távora to become the administrator of both chapels. He would be succeeded by his eldest son. If the administrator left no descendants, the chapels would be administrated by the chaplain of the convent of Nossa Senhora da Rosa. Francisca, who was buried in the church of the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo de Lisboa, bequeathed 300 000 réis to Mariana Mesurada so that she could purchase a rent or public debt instrument to ensure the fulfilment of a perpetual mass in the convent for her soul and for the souls of her deceased family members. Mariana declares that she and her heirs will accomplish this charge. This rent cannot be divided, but, if it is sold, it must always retain this obligation. It inserts an extract from Francisca Serrão’s will and a dispatch from the provedor dos resíduos.

Bond by which Gonçalo Rodrigues Angel, cavaleiro do hábito de São Tiago, declared that, in 1655-04-27, he bought to D. Isabel Sequeira, widow of Pedro da Cunha, a public debt instrument of 26 950 réis in Casa da Madeira de Lisboa. His aunts Joana do Deserto and Mariana das Chagas, nuns in the Convent of Santa Clara, should possess this public debt instrument until their deaths but, afterward, it should remain in the possession of the institutor and the heirs he would nominate. If he did not have heirs, it should succeed the successor of the entail of Lopo Duarte Ximenes and his wife Joana da Veiga with the same conditions of succession.
