Contract and bond deed

Contract and bond deed by which the friars of the convent of S. Domingos donated to Brianda Nunes, Francisco Rodrigues de Elvas' widow, and her sons, Gonçalo Rodrigues de Elvas and Nicolau Nunes de Elvas, the space for them to erect a chapel and family grave in the church of that convent, in exchange for 100 000 réis. Brianda, Gonçalo and Nicolau committed themselves to give the friars, each year, a public debt instrument of 54 000 réis, whose revenues would support the celebration of annual masses for their souls and those of Francisco Rodrigues de Elvas and Belchior Gomes, Brianda and Francisco's son. Thus, they followed the wishes expressed in Francisco and Belchior's wills, who already were buried in the chapter house of the referred convent. Contract and bond deed between the priests of convent of Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo de Lisboa and João Brandão, in his name and on the behalf of his wife, D. Isabel de Cunha. This couple received the chapel of S. Sebastião located in the church of the convent from the religious for their grave and for their descendants, agreeing the conditions and obligations for both parties. João Brandão and his spouse established a set of perpetual pious charges for their souls in this chapel, obligating for its fulfilment an annual rent paid in wheat, mortgaging for that a property in the outskirts of Azambuja and their houses in Lisbon. João Brandão’s parents, Duarte Brandão and Margarida Beamonda, were also buried in this chapel; his mother D. Margarida established her own pious charges in it, but the contract stresses that the chapel of S. Sebastião belonged to João Brandão, his wife and their heirs.

Contract and bond deed between João Rodrigues de Sá de Meneses, Alcaide-mor e capitão do Porto, D. Catarina de Noronha, his wife, and the prior and friars of the convent of S. Francisco, by which the latter donated half of the main chapel of that convent to the former, allowing them and their successors to bury their remains there. The other half of the chapel already belonged to them. In exchange, the couple gave 500 cruzados for the construction of an infirmary in that convent. The couple and their descendants were henceforth responsible for the maintenance of the chapel. Contains a copy of a letter of attorney.

Contract and bond deed between the friars of the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo of Lisboa and Simão Rodrigues de Andrade, who also represented his wife, Isabel da Silva Moutinho, by which they allowed him to erect a chapel in their church, near the chapel of Santo Anjo, where the bodies of the institutors and the remains of their descendants would be buried. Simão Rodrigues de Andrade and his wife committed themselves to donate a public debt instrument of 35 000 réis or a property to the convent at the time of their deaths. Its revenues would support the celebration of perpetual masses for their souls and the repair of the chapel.

Contract and bond deed by which Ana Brandão, represented by Bento Pereira, promised to give, in the following 6 years, a public debt instrument of 20 000 réis to the friars of the convent of S. Bento de Lisboa to buy the chapel of Santo Amaro, where her body, the remains of her husband, Ambrósio Fernandes Brandão, and of the successors of the entail established by him would be buried. She also committed herself to buy a public debt instrument of 30 000 réis to support the celebration of a perpetual daily mass and another one every All Saints' Day in that chapel. The friars of that convent accepted this deed, allowing Ana Brandão to put the institutor's coat of arms above the chapel and providing an altar piece to it. A statue of S. João Evangelista would be displayed inside it, according to Ambrósio Fernandes Brandão's will. The future administrators of the entail were obligated to preserve the state of the chapel and to give, each year, 5 000 réis to the convent, guaranteeing its maintenance. The money would be extracted from the revenues of entailed houses on Calçada do Combro, Lisboa.

The condes entail a revenue of 10 000 reis from the Casa do Pescado of Peniche to an obligation of finishing the construction of the chancel and keeping it well-kept and decorated.

Contract and bond deed between Paulo de Carvalho, superintendente das obras e finta da igreja de S. Nicolau, Luís Fernandes Teixeira, procurador da finta e obras da igreja de S. Contract and bond deed between the priests of the convent of Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo de Lisboa and Álvaro Pacheco and his son-in-law, Diogo Fernandes das Póvoas. It reinforces a previous agreement in which the priests granted them a chapel in the convent's church to serve as a burial site for them, their wives, and descendants, under a set of detailed conditions. Álvaro Pacheco and Diogo Fernandes established perpetual pious charges, including masses in the chapel, and agreed to pay an annual rent in wheat to ensure their fulfilment. After their death, the chapel would be administrated by Álvaro Pacheco, o Moço, respectively their grandson and son. Álvaro Pacheco strengthens this entail by giving his grandson three properties, described in detail along with the conditions for the entail's transmission.

Contract and bond deed by which António Fernandes de Elvas, cavaleiro fidalgo da Casa do Rei, and Maior Fernandes, his wife, establish a chapel of the invocation of Santo António in the convent of Santíssima Trindade of Lisboa, where they wish to be buried with their descendants. They promise to entail a public debt instrument and a rent to an obligation of a daily mass in that convent and masses in the days of Santo António and of Todos os Santos. The chapel will be administered by the administrators of the entail they will institute. The priests of the convent promise to fulfill the obligations and give them a place for the chapel.

Domingos of Guimarães and Gonçalo Peixoto da Silva de Macedo de Carvalho, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, Donatário do Concelho de Penafiel e Sousa, by which the latter, representing Tadeu Luís António, his grandson and ward, committed himself to finish the construction of the chapel instituted by his late son-in-law, Gonçalo Lopes de Carvalho Fonseca Camões, and to adorn it appropriately. It would be administrated by the institutor's descendants and, in the absence of a lawful heir, by his closest living relative. The value which would be paid by Gonçalo Peixoto da Silva de Macedo de Carvalho would be decided after the appraisal of 2 masters. The friars accepted the contractual terms. Contract and bond deed signed by the friars of the monastery of S. Bento of Lisboa and João de Almada de Melo, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei and Comendador da Ordem de Cristo, through which they gave him and his successors the chapel of S. Bernardo, where the remains of Gaspar de Araújo e Sousa and of the administrators of his entail would, henceforth, be deposited. João de Almada de Melo, who was the nephew of Gaspar de Sousa Lobo and succeeded him in the administration of Gaspar de Araújo e Sousa's entail, was obligated to finish the construction of the chapel and to leave a public debt instrument of 54 000 réis to the monastery. Contract and bond deed between Pedro Rodrigues de Castro, Fidalgo Cavaleiro da Casa do Rei, and the friars of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa, by which he orders them to celebrate 50 annual masses for the soul of his father, Rui Pires de Castro, whose body was buried in the convent's church. He commits himself to give each year to the convent 330 reais brancos, which should be extracted from the revenues of his farmstead (quinta) of Fontoura, in the outskirts of Lisboa.

Contract and bond deed between the cabido of the cathedral of Évora and João Mendes de Vasconcelos, membro do Conselho do Rei, by which the latter asked permission to erect a chapel in that cathedral, in which 150 annual masses would be perpetually celebrated and where his remains, those of his wife and their descendants would be buried. The chapel would be attached to the entail established by Teresa Eanes da Fonseca ("morgado do Esporão"), which he administrated. The cabido accepted this request, determining that João Mendes de Vasconcelos had to entail a rent to that chapel in order to support the celebration of the annual masses. If he failed to do that, the third part of his assets and of his wife's estate would be associated to that pious obligation.
Contains copies of a letter sent by the cabido to the King, his answer to the requirement and a letter written by the Cardinal. The contract was approved by D. Briolanja de Melo in 1528-07-17.

Pedro commits himself to give them within a year a public debt instrument of 50 000 réis, whose revenues should support the celebration of annual masses for his soul.

Francisco of Lisboa and Cristóvão Rodrigues Becares, by which the latter buys the usufruct of the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia, in their convent, which the Crown had confiscated to Pedro de Baeça, its former owner, for debts. He promises to pay anually to the convent 2 000 reis for its ornamentation and to order a weekly mass for the souls in Purgatory. He designates it as his family's burial place and entails to it his houses in Lisboa, in rua dos Cabides, passing these obligations to his successors. The document mentions an acquisition deed dated 1645-10-24, by which Cristóvão Rodrigues Becares acquired the chapel from Álvaro de Azevedo, who had bought it from Luís Vaz de Resende, who had acquired it through a public auction.

Contract and bond deed between the religious of the convent of Nossa Senhora do Carmo de Lisboa and Diogo Fernandes de Portalegre, in his name and in name of his wife Juliana Correia. The priests give them and their heirs and successors a place in the church of the convent to build a chapel dedicated to S. Pedro and oblige themselves to accomplish perpetual pious charges for this couple’s souls, and to provide the chapel with everything necessary. In their turn, the couple promise to offer an annual public debt instrument or rent of 35 000 réis. If they die without fulfilling the promise, this value should be taken from their assets until their heirs purchase the public debt instrument or rent. It is followed by a consent deed of Juliana Correia (made on the same date, signed on 1628-05-09).

Contract and bond deed by which Miguel de Vasconcelos e Brito, do Conselho do Rei and his secretário de Estado, in his name and in the name of his wife, D. Catarina de Macedo, receives from the priests of the convent of S. Francisco de Xabregas, Lisboa, the chapel dos Cristos, or do Calvário, in their convent, to use as family pantheon. He establishes a daily mass for his and his wife's souls, and promises in their name and the name of their successors, to give a public debt instrument to the convent to support this obligation. If it isn't given, the payment of the masses shall be made from the revenue of their houses in Lisboa.

Contract and bond deed between D. Maria de Castro and the prior and friars of the convent of Nossa Senhora do Espinheiro, by which they gave to her the chapel of S. Jerónimo and committed themselves to celebrate a perpetual daily mass for the soul of her late husband, D. Garcia de Meneses. The chapel would become a family mausoleum. D. Maria de Castro entailed a public debt instrument of 45 000 réis to the chapel, which would be given by D. Duarte de Castelo Branco, Meirinho mor, and D. Catarina da Silva, his wife. Part of the public debt instrument's income had to be spent in the chapel's maintenance. The friars were obligated to give an account of how they managed that money to the chapel's administrator. Contract and bond deed by which Francisco de Melo, monteiro-mor, contracted with the priests of the Convent of São Francisco de Santarém to have the main chapel in order to place there his grave. The institutor wanted to give to the priests 300 000 réis, and to pay more 25 000 réis each year for the celebration of masses for his and his heirs' soul. He also wanted to give five jars of oil for the candles of the Santíssimo Sacramento and whatever would be necessary for the maintenance of the chapel. Followed by a consent deed of his wife D. To support the pious obligations instituted, they entailed to it the third part of their patrimony, including their farmstead (quinta). The first administrator would be the surviving spouse and, after him, the heir of Afonso Munhós, preferably the elder male.

Declaration deed of the assets of the chapel and entail instituted by Fernando Álvares da Cunha, located in the church of Nossa Senhora da Vitória of Lisboa, issued by Doutor Gaspar Ferraz, provedor dos Hospitais, Capelas, Confrarias e Resíduos of Lisboa, following a petition presented by Joana Vaz. The administrator, after a demand with the entail, changed the properties previously entailed, requesting the declaration deed to add them to the books intended for the registration of the entail in Torre do Tombo and in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Vitória, which she had already ordered to be made.
It also includes several documents relating to the purchase of real estate, incomes and public debt instruments, along with the realization of leases, prior to the establishment of the entail, dated between 1556-07-09 and 1570-10-14.

Declaration deed by Luís Álvares de Madureira and Joana de Madureira, by which they decided to incorporate in the previously instituted entail the inheritance they had received from Pedro de Madureira, father of Joana and father-in-law and uncle of Luís Álvares. They also included the houses they owned in Rua Nova, in Porto, as well as estates in the outskirts of Porto and Guimarães. They also decided that the administrators of the entail would be obliged to celebrate perpetual masses in the chapel located in the farmstead of Freixo, the head of the entail.

Declaration deed by which João Manuel Soares and Diogo Soares, his father, declare to be executors, heirs and administrators of Cosme Dias. They give an account of the fulfillment of their wills and legacies. Among them, the institution of a chaplaincy of masses, in the monastery of São Francisco of Seville where he was buried, as well as another in the Hospital of Nossa Senhora da Paz. They also orders the rebuilding of the hermitage of Nossa Senhora das Neves, in Vila Nova de Monsarros, as well as the celebration of perpetual charges. João Manuel Soares would be its patron during his life, succeeding him the closest relative of Cosme Dias and the chaplain of the chapel, who would administer it together. Establishes another chapel for masses, in the convent of São Francisco of Coimbra.

Declaration deed by which Estêvão Martins Gavião states that he left, in his will, the income from the Herdade da Fonte Alva for the celebration of pious charges for the souls of Lopo Rodrigues and Maior Pires. In the same way, for incomes of the ferragiais of São Silvestre charges were to be celebrated by his wife Maior Domingues. Estêvão Martins entails the other half of the said ferragiais, adding charges for his soul. After his death, he shall be succeeded by his eldest son.

Declaration deed of D. Maria da Costa Noronha adding some clauses related to her chapel, founded by her will, and the entail of Costas, founded by her parents, D. Gil Eanes da Costa and D. Margarida de Noronha. The testator specifies that she wants that only the successors of D. João da Costa, conde de Soure, succeed in her chapel. Otherwise, if his lineage becomes extinct the administration of her chapel should be transferred to Misericórdia of Lisbon. D. Maria da Costa Noronha also entails to her parents' entail a golden ring with the coat of arms of Costas. Besides, she mentions that she owns the entail founded by D. Pedro de Sousa, in which she has a lawsuit with D. Lourenço de Sousa, informing that Nuno Gomes, seu criado, has to give account of the income taken from that entail.

Donation deed, made in Arronches, in which Isabel Bernardes took a rent worth three moios of wheat she owned in an estate named Herdade da Carneira and donated it to her nephew António Bernardes as an entail with a perpetual obligation of twenty six masses celebrated every year, from which six would be sung. She also disposed that all administrators should distribute three alqueires of wheat in All Soul's Day among the poor people. After António's death, the succession should always continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir, and if he had no children or his bloodline became extinguished, the administration would be handled to the Misericórdia of Arronches.

Manuel is obligated to celebrate annual masses for the souls of Luis and those of his parents and grandparents, in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. After Manuel's death, the entail should be administered by his eldest son.

Catarina de Noronha, his wife, where his ancestors were buried. The convent had previously confirmed this donation to D. Filipa da Cunha, João Rodrigues de Sá de Meneses' great-grandmother. Doutor João de Avelar, representing the couple, took possession of the chapel.

Donation deed by which Maria Pires Rová, Martinho Fernandes' widow, donates houses and vineyards in Lisboa to the convent of S. Domingos of that city, obligating its friars to celebrate annual masses for her soul and that of her husband, which was buried inside the chapel of S. Martinho. She declares that before her death she would appoint a relative to be the chapel's first administrator, demanding that, every year, her successor should give 105 libras to the convent. Followed by a letter of possession.

Donation deed by which Luís de Brito, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, administrator of the entails of S. Lourenço de Lisboa and S. Estêvão de Beja, and his wife, D. Joana de Ataíde, donated, respectively, the third part of his assets and all of her patrimony to the convent of Nossa Senhora do Rosário of Lisboa, which they had founded, obligating its friars to celebrate 2 daily perpetual masses, 2 weekly masses and 2 masses each All Saint's day for their souls. The institutors maintained the privilege of giving consent to the choice of the convent's prioress. After the death of both of them, the Provinciais da Ordem de S. Domingos would become the administrators of the convent and of their chapel. The ornaments of their chapel are minutely described, as well as their devotional library. Followed by a warrant confirming this deed, issued on 1519-08-30, and a termo de apresentação, issued on 1520-03-02.

Donation deed by which D. Frei Jerónimo de Gouveia, bispo de Ceuta, revoked a previous donation made to his brothers, and donated a public debt instrument of 60 000 réis in Almoxarifado do Pescado to be spend on the conversion of jews, moors and gentiles or, in alternative, in orphans dowries. He designated Bartolomeu Nogueira, escrivão da Casa dos Catecumenos, to be its administrator, as well as the priests of Companhia de Jesus. He also established the obligation to celebrate masses in the Monastery of Santa Marta, and that the abbess and nuns of this monastery were obligated to administer it under the supervision of the administrators. The first administrator Bartolomeu Nogueira should designate whomever he wanted to succeed in the chapel, but if he died prior the institutor, he would nominate the successor.

Luís, and his wife, Lucrécia Forjaz, donate 3 000 cruzados de ouro to her daughter, Luísa Forjaz, enabling her marriage with Pedro Vaz, Doutor Pedro Vaz's son. With the purpose of endowing the groom, Grimaneza Forjaz, Doutor Pedro Vaz's wife, establishes an entail with part of her assets, instituting the obligation of celebrating 12 annual masses in the chapel she had founded in the church of the convent of S. Domingos of Lisboa. After her death, it should be administered by her husband and subsequently inherited by her stepson. Grimaneza declares that, except for Pedro, she has no living heirs.

Dowry deed by which Catarina de Sá, her brother Luís Pereira de Sá and his wife D. Catarina, wanted to give a dowry to their nephew and son José de Sousa Pereira to marry with D. Isabel de Távora Coutinho, daughter of Pedro Lopes de Quadros and his wife D. Maria Francisca Teles. The donators wanted to incorporate their thirds into the entail founded by Catarina de Sá, which would include some lands, "casais" and olive groves near to the fam of Chafariz das Pipas. It should succeed in the entail the eldest son of his nephew José de Sousa Pereira. The institutor's brother also endowed his son with a farm located in the place of "Meca" and other "prazos" in Lisboa and Guarda. The successors were obligated to order the celebration of masses in the chapel of São Francisco Xavier, in the Church of São Pedro de Alenquer, and were also obligated to deliver the masses certificates to the Misericórdia of Alenquer. D. Luísa Antónia de Távora endowed the bride with a farm located on the outskirts of Lisboa, and 60 000 réis of a "tença" she possessed in Alfândega de Lisboa. Preceded by a power of attorney of D. Luísa Antónia de Sousa dated 1673-05-24.

Dowry deed by which João Soares do Amaral and his wife Sebastiana de Moura donated to their daughter Dona Ana do Amaral all their assets located in Lisboa, Lousã, Rabaçal, Penela do Couto and Monte da Fonte in order to marry to Luís de Valadares Carneiro. The institutors also wanted to incorporate their thirds into the chapel of São José, in the Monastery of Nossa Senhora da Graça, in Coimbra, designating their future eldest grandson to be its first administrator. He was due to order the celebration of masses, using the rents of some houses located in Coimbra. Finally, the institutors' established that the chapel's administrator should give to Inês Monteiro de Moura, nun of the Monastery of Semide, 10 000 réis de tença. If the grooms did not live in the institutor's house, they should receive 100 000 réis each year.

Dowry deed by which João de Valadares Carneiro and his wife Catarina Pereira donated their assets to their son Luís de Valadares in order to get married with Ana do Amaral. They established an entail using their thirds, with the obligation to celebrate masses in the Misericórdia do Porto and Church of S. Bento, S. Geraldo and Chagas. This entail should be succeeded by his eldest son and the future successors should also incorporate half of their thirds into this entail. The institutor's son was donated with the farm of Veiga de Poucos and the "prazo" of São João da Foz. If the grooms did not live in the institutors' house, they should receive the rents of a public debt instrument of 100 000 réis in Imposição dos Vinhos, 12 000 réis in the houses of "Abelheiro" belonging to the chapel of Maria Carneiro, the prazo of "Meixeira" and Quebrantões, a "herdade" on the outskirts of Barcelos and a vineyard located in Mosteiro.

Dowry deed in which Francisco Nunes Velho, priest, endowed António Pacheco de Oliveira on the occasion of his marriage with Ana de Resende, daughter of Nuno Curvelo and Catarina Fernandes, and founded an entail with a perpetual obligation of one mass celebrated every week, two masses in S. Francisco's day and another in Onze Mil Virgens' day. He named António Pacheco and Ana de Resende as first administrators, and after the death of both of them the succession should continue, preferably, on the eldest male heir. If they had no children, the entail should be administrated by his nephew Francisco Nunes de Melo with the same conditions, or the person that he, doner, appoints on his will.

Dowry deed by which Afonso Gomes and his wife, Maria das Neves, appoint Manuel Gomes, Afonso's son and Maria's stepson, as their universal heir. They bequeath him their properties with the condition that he establishes a chapel of 60 masses, 30 for each one of them, in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa, where they shall be buried. Manuel Gomes is present and accepts this appointment.

Antónia de Siqueira, widow of António Gonçalves de Sequeira, endowed her nephew Francisco de Siqueira Pestana and her niece Maria de Siqueira on the occasion of their marriage with all of her assets, including properties in Arronches, which would henceforth be entailed with a perpetual pious obligation of 70 masses celebrated every year. She appointed the future couple to become the first administrators of that entail. After their deaths, they would be succeeded by their eldest son. If they left no descendants, the administration would be handled to Leonor de Siqueira, niece of the institutor with the same conditions, or to Gonçalo, her nephew. The institutor disposed that all administrators would be obliged to give two alqueires of bread to the Misericórdia of Arronches for charity and distribution among the poor people, being institution obligated to issue a written acquittance to prove they had done so.

Helena de Almada, Doutor Vicente Caldeira de Brito's widow, Desembargador do Paço, donates her farmstead (quinta) of Boca da Lapa, in Via Longa, with the pious obligation of celebrating masses in the church of the convent of S. Domingos, to her cousin, D. Beatriz de Freitas, for her marriage to Jerónimo de Brito Caldeira, Helena's stepson. The couple was equally obligated to pay an annual pension to the donator's sisters, Madre Tomásia da Ressurreição, Madre Brígida da Cruz and Madre Bárbara Baptista, nuns in the convent of Chelas, as long as they lived. During Helena's lifetime, the revenues extracted from the farmstead belonged exclusively to her.
D. Mécia Couto, Gaspar Leitão da Fonseca's widow, donates a public debt instrument of 37 000 réis to D. Beatriz de Freitas, whose revenues would belong to her and her niece, D. Maria de Melo, during their lifetimes. After the death of the last one, D. Beatriz de Freitas was obligated to pay an annual pension to Madre Catarina da Piedade, nun in the convent of S. Ana, during her lifetime. Following Catarina's death, D. Beatriz had the obligation of supporting the celebration of annual masses in the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa. The public debt instrument should be inherited by D. Beatriz and Jerónimo's descendants.

Dowry deed by which António Frade, carpinteiro, endowed his cousin Beatriz Ferreira to marry Manuel Rodrigues, carpinteiro, giving them some houses located in the parish of São Tomé, in Lisboa. They were obligated to give an alms of 2 000 réis each year to the Confraria and Irmandade of São Tomé. He also declared that he possessed some immovable goods located in Pombal, who were given to him and his wife by Beatriz Botelho, with the obligation to celebrate masses in the Church of São Tomé, and the grooms should succeed in this obligation. Manuel Rodrigues and Beatriz Fernandes accepted these two pious obligations.

Dowry deed by which António Luís de Lisboa and his wife Andresa Nunes endowed their daughter Jerónima da Cruz to marry António Raposo do Prado. António Luís donated to his daughter his third in order to establish an entail, designating her to be its first administrator. It should succeed in this entail the eldest daughter of her daughter Jerónima, or an eldest son in her absence. The administrator was due to order the celebration of masses for his soul wherever she wanted, and the successors were obligated to incorporate their thirds into this entail.

Dowry deed in which padre Manuel Fernandes Vitória ordered the foundation of an entail and simultaneously endowed Francisco de Machado Faria with several properties in Rabo do Peixe and Sete Cidades, in S. Miguel Island, donated to him on the occasion of his marriage with Mariana de Faria Vitória, his niece. He named them to be the first administrators of the entail and, preferably, their eldest male descendants after them, who would have the perpetual obligation of a daily mass in the chapel of N. Sra. da Vitória, in Relva, S. Miguel island, always celebrated by a relative. The administrators would also be obliged to support the costs of the festivities in honour of N. Sra. da Vitória during 21 years. Every administrator should bare the surname "Vitória" or, otherwise, lose the administration. No clergyman or convict on the crime of lese-majeste could inherit the administration. If the bloodline of the first administrators was ever extinguished, the entail should be transmitted and annexed to the entail founded by António Lopes de Faria.

Dowry deed by which Manuel Carrilho de Matos donates as an entail several rural properties in the outskirts of Castelo de Vide, Fronteira and Avis, to Nicolau de Matos Leitão and D. Antónia de Sequeira, his wife. After the death of Nicolau de Matos Leitão, the administration should pass to a son of his choice, and the same would happen in the following generations. If descendants were lacking, a recolhimento should be founded, invoking Senhora da Piedade, in the place of Mealhada, on the outskirts of Castelo de Vide.

Dowry deed by which Margarida Carreira established an entail, donating to her niece Margarida Carreira de Almada and her future husband Afonso Vieira the rents of some houses located in Lisboa. Her sister Isabel Carreira de Almada, mother of Margarida Carreira de Almada, also donated to the grooms some houses located in Lisboa. The grooms accepted the conditions and Afonso Vieira gave to his bride 500 000 réis in "arras".

Dowry deed by which Beatriz de Mesquita donated to her niece Ana de Melo a dowry to get married with Sebastião da Costa Valente, with the obligation to celebrate masses and to free some of her slaves. This entail composed of a farm called "da Landeira". By the death of the administrator Ana de Melo, it should be appointed her son or daughter, and after their death whomever they choose.

Entail and chapel foundation deed by Lopo Rebelo, cavaleiro and "comendador" of the Order of Christ and citizen of Porto. The founder decided to establish a chapel "à maneira de morgado", incorporating in particular his farmstead of Caldas, located in Aregos. The owner of the entail would be his first-born son, and the succession would pass through the male line of the institutor's descendants. The chapel where the founder would be buried and where perpetual masses would be celebrated would be located in the São Domingos do Porto Monastery. An inventory of the entail's estates was to be made.

Pantaleão appoints his son João Martins Ferreira as the first administrator, who will also possess the entail established by Pantaleão's father, João Martins Ferreira, with a chapel in the monastery of S. Domingos, in Porto. The founder spituales that the successor to the entail should be primarily the first-born son, forced to use his family name in public and private documents.

Entail and chapel foundation deed confirming a contract between Francisco Pereira de Miranda and his wife Guiomar de Miranda and the convent of S. Domingos of Porto. Jorge Pereira de Miranda, fidalgo da casa do rei, acted as his parents' attorney. The convent gave the couple its granary to build a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção, with a direct door to the cloister; in return, the institutors had to build another granary. The administrators had the right to be buried and to place their coats of arms in the chapel.

Entail and chapel foundation deed by Gonçalo Eanes de Pamplona, citizen of Porto. The monastery of S. Francisco do Porto granted Gonçalo the possession of a chapel in the church of the said monastery, dedicated to S. António, in which Gonçalo had the right to bury himself and his descendants. Gonçalo Eanes de Pamplona accepted the chapel and decided to establish an entail for the service of God and for the salvation of his soul and that of his deceased wife, Leonor Gomes de Miranda. To this end, he entailed urban and rural properties in Porto and in the "termo" of this city and of Barcelos. The estates were united in the "Morgado" and its administrator had to pay annually the fees for the perpetual masses to be celebrated in the chapel of S. António, as well as 2,000 reis to be spent on the chapel's "fábrica". The founder would be the first administrator, and he would later choose one of his children as his successor. If he failed to appoint the next administrator, the succession would pass to the first-born son or, alternatively, the first-born daughter.

They designate their eldest son, Luís César, as first administrator, and his descendants afterwards. They establish an obligation of two weekly masses and other annual masses in the chapel of Cinco Chagas de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo of the monastery of Santíssima Trindade, where they wish to be buried, to which they entail their houses in Lisboa. All the administrators of the entail must also succeed on the administration of the chapel established by Catarina Vaz, wife of Paio Lourenço, in the church of São Nicolau of Santarém, which they currently administered.

Entail foundation deed by which Manuel Caldeira, Fidalgo da Casa do Rei, established an entail with part of his assets and those belonging to his late wife, Guiomar Caldeira, namely his houses on Rua de Santa Catarina de Monte Sinai, Lisboa. He designated his son, André Caldeira, to administrate it. By doing so, he fulfilled a dowry deed which he and his late wife, Guiomar Caldeira, had issued, before the marriage of their son with Catarina da Silva, daughter of Lopo Furtado de Mendonça. The institutor determined that the perpetual pious obligations would only be declared in a chapel foundation deed. André Caldeira and Catarina da Silva, his wife, gave their consent to this deed.

He lists the properties entailed and appoints Inês Álvares de Simas as first administrator during her lifetime. After her death, she would be succeeded by D. Margarida de Simas and from there on the succession should preferably continue on the eldest male heir.

Entail foundation deed by which Duarte Correia de Sousa, escrivão da Câmara do Rei e dos Despachos e Negócios das comarcas de Alentejo e Algarve, son of Pedro Vaz Correia and D. Inês de Sousa and stepson of Salvador Correia de Sá, establishes an entail with the properties he inherited from his relatives: a farmstead in Alvalade, houses in Lisboa and lands in Chamusca. He designates his cousin, Jerónimo de Castro, son of his aunt D. Luísa de Lacerda, as first administrator of his entail, and his descendants afterwards. If he has no successors, the entail shall pass to his other cousins Rui Correia Lucas, D. Catarina Salema, or António Teixeira Telo. The administrator of his entail shall also administer the chapel he established in the sacristy of the monastery of Santíssima Trindade, where he wishes to be buried, founded in 1615-12-29. This chapel has the obligation of a daily mass, two weekly masses and other annual masses.

Entail foundation deed made by Pedro Mascarenhas, membro do Conselho do Rei, and D. Helena Mascarenhas, his wife, before the former embarked for Índia to become Vice-Rei. They entailed the third part of their assets, which included their farmstead in Alcácer do Sal ("torre e quinta da Palma"), and designated D. João Mascarenhas, their nephew, who was married to D. Helena Mascarenhas, their niece, to administrate that entail. The institutors also declared that they had erected a chapel in the convent of Santo António of Alcácer do Sal, to whose maintenance the administrator had to contribute with 20 000 réis.

Entail foundation deed by which António Garcia and Violante Pais, his sister-in-law, founded a chapel. This entail is composed of assets inherited by the death of Margarida Pais, António Garcia's wife and Violante Pais' sister. They appointed Pedro de Oliveira to succeed in this entail, after the death of the last institutor. The administrator was due the obligation to order the celebration of masses in the church of São Paulo, in Lisboa, using the rents of a "casal do Moinho" left by João Lopes Rosa, on the outskirts of Torres Vedras.

Entail foundation deed by which D. Fernando Mascarenhas, do Conselho do Rei, and his wife, D. Filipa da Silva, establish the entail of Torre das Várzeas, headed by their farmstead in Ponte de Sor, and composed of another farmstead and houses in Santarém. They bequeath it to their eldest son, D. Manuel Mascarenhas, and to his descendants afterwards. The entail shall be annexed to their chapel in the chancel of the church of the convent of Nossa Senhora da Serra of Santarém, where they wish to be buried, with the obligation of a daily mass and other annual masses.

Entail foundation deed by D. Isabel de Góis with her described properties, appointing her brother, João Mendes de Meneses, as its first administrator. This administrator has the pious obligation of a perpetual prayed mass in the church of Madalena of Lisbon. D. Isabel de Góis renounces to her properties, only reserving an annual income during her lifetime, immediately giving the entail's ownership to her brother, who was present and accepted this entail, with its all declared conditions, declarations and obligations. The institutor also appoints João Mendes de Meneses as her successor in the available portion of D. Cecília de Meneses, their late sister, with the pious obligation of a perpetual daily mass in the monastery of Madre de Deus de Xabregas and another perpetual divine office of nine lessons, per year, in the church of S. Jorge of Lisbon.

Isabel Pacheco, his wife, establish an entail with the third part of their assets, which includes a farmstead (quinta) in Samouco, Alcochete, houses in Lisboa, lands (casal) in Benfica and in Carnaxide, lands (casal) in Linda-a-Velha, Oeiras, and a public debt instrument of 50 000 réis in Casa e sisa das herdades. They designate their eldest son to become its first administrator, determining that him and his descendants should support the celebration of annual masses for their souls in the church of Santa Maria Madalena of that city, in whose sacristy their chapel would be erected.

Entail foundation deed by which Afonso Domingues de Beja, Cavaleiro do Conselho do Rei D. Fernando, and Maria Domingues, his wife, established an entail with houses in Lisboa, a farmstead in Montachique ("quinta de Vale Namorado"), lands in Bucelas, Romeira and Sintra. They designated their son, Pedro Afonso, to become its first administrator, obligating him and his successors to sustain a chaplain in the church of S. Bartolomeu of Lisboa, who would be responsible for celebrating perpetual masses for their souls, and to provide for a poor person, giving him/her food and clothes every year. Pedro Afonso had to be succeeded by his brother, João Afonso, or, if he died before him, by his eldest son. The institutors declared their intention to found another entail with properties in Alentejo, who would be administrated by the heirs of Maria Domingues.

Damião Ramires designated his son Jorge Soares Pereira to be its first administrator and obligated him to give to this church 12 000 réis for the celebration of the masses, and to give wax and oil for the candles, using the rents of some houses located in Lisboa and of a farm in Loures. Esperança Pereira also founded an entail using her third, and designating her son Pedro Ramires Pereira to be its first administrator, with the obligation to buy free holding assets to be incorporated into this entail. It should succeed in this entail his eldest son or, in his absence, the eldest daughter. If he died childless it should succeed her son Manuel Soares Pereira and, after his death, her son Jorge Soares Pereira and his heirs. All the three sons confirmed this entail foundation deed and its conditions.

Entail foundation deed by which Rui Lopes de Évora, fidalgo de geração, and his wife, Leonor Rodrigues da Veiga, establish an entail for their eldest son, Manuel da Veiga, and his wife, Isabel Gomes Angel, who should afterwards be succeeded by their eldest son, Rui Lopes da Veiga. They include in the entail their farmstead of Montijos, in Lisboa, with its lands, and other properties and public debt instruments which should total 54 000 cruzados. The entail will always be united to the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Palma e S. Guilherme which they founded in the monastery of Nossa Senhora da Graça of Lisboa, with the obligation of a daily mass. All of the named parties are present and accept these conditions, promising to fulfil them.

Entail foundation deed by which Gaspar de Torres, fidalgo da Casa do Rei, and D. Leonor de Alarcão, his wife, establish an entail with five public debt instruments bought with the revenue donated to them by Afonso de Torres, their father and father-in-law, on the ocasion of their marriage. This donation had been made under the condition that they should establish an entail. They also establish an obligation of a daily mass in the chapel of Todos os Santos of the convent of S. Francisco of Lisboa, which shall have five merceeiras who will pray for their souls. If the lineages of Gaspar de Torres and his siblings are extinguished, the entail shall pass to the Câmara de Lisboa, who shall build a hospital with a chapel of the invocation of S. Paulo with its rents.

Entail foundation deed by Maria de Rebelo with the houses she inherited from her late husband, Diogo Fernandes Correia, in Cata-Que-Farás, in Lisboa. The institutor appoints her nephew, Rui de Abreu de Rebelo, and his descendants to succeed in this entail. She also orders the construction, in her life or after her death, of a chapel in the church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in Lisbon, to be the family tomb, where her husband, herself and her entail's administrator will be buried, with the pious obligation of a perpetual prayed daily mass.

Entail foundation deed by which Inês Álvares, widow of João Rodrigues Geraldes, establishes an entail with her properties in Sacavém and Lisboa, and a public debt instrument, donating it as a dowry to Baltasar Pires Machado, her husband's nephew, and to Bárbara Jorge, her great-niece, who must marry each other, and to their successors. She shall have the usufruct of the properties during her lifetime. The heirs of the entail shall give 4 000 reis to the monastery of Santo Elói every year for the care of 10 poor people. She reserves 25 alqueires of wheat, which her heirs must use to buy a property to entail to an obligation of three annual masses in the monastery of S. Salvador, Lisboa, where she wishes to be buried. This property shall pass to a person they appoint. She also appoints her heirs as administrators of the chapel of S. João Evangelista in the monastery of Santo Elói, which she possesses.
Part of the houses Inês Álvares entailed already had an obligation of twenty masses in the monastery of Salvador of Lisboa for the soul of Diogo Álvares, her first husband.
Baltasar Pires Machado is present and accepts these conditions. Bárbara Jorge is represented by her father, Sebastião Jorge, who accepts in her name.
